Continues the reader: 'Thinking of things like a microwave, air fryer, toaster oven, etc. Multifunctional would be great, and we're willing to invest in quality, but not super high-end. The student in question loves food and has broad tastes, is inclined to cook, and has decent beginner skills, but is busy and will likely keep things pretty basic (think a piece of salmon [with] veggies vs. fries and frozen pizza, [though] I'm sure there will be plenty of that, too.'

The 34 best restaurants in Malta
In the last decade Malta has morphed from a nation still culinarily compromised by the legacy of British colonial cooking to a truly gourmet Mediterranean destination. It received its first Michelin stars in 2020,and now has seven Michelin-starred restaurants, one of them with two stars. All serve primarily modern Mediterranean cuisine. Many more restaurants are named and praised in the Malta Michelin Guide. You can still get a great full English breakfast, or even a butty and beer if you insist, but you can also eat extremely well (without Michelin stars) for far less than in the UK. So why not avail yourself of the region's best with perfectly cooked fish fresh from the surrounding sea cooked with just-off-the-bush capers and local white wine, or fresh lobster ravioli and sumptuous steak followed by ricotta cassata, gooey hot chocolate pudding or homemade fig ice cream. The Maltese love their food, so the country is full of excellent restaurants, patronised by locals and visitors alike. Portions are often large, and nobody here wants to rush through a meal, so allow a bit of time, relax, and enjoy. Find a restaurant by type: Best all-rounders Rubino An unassuming Dickensian shopfront leads to this smart but relaxed Valletta favourite, with white tablecloths and walls decorated with wine bottles and bottled vegetables. The blackboard menu of excellent traditional Maltese, Sicilian and Mediterranean dishes changes daily. There is always a mix of meat and fish, and usually a rabbit dish (much loved by locals). The slow-cooked lamb melts in the mouth, and don't miss Rubino's rightly famous Sicilian cassata – made with ricotta cheese, not too sweet and utterly delectable. Service is efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. Awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand (for 'good quality and good value food') since 2020, this is a place to return to again and again. Guzé In one of Valletta's oldest houses said to have belonged to the city's sixteenth-century Maltese architect (Girolamo Cassar), you'll find Guzé. This intimate, family-run restaurant serves consistently excellent food in an elegant but relaxed limestone-and-white-linen interior. Equally good are their perfectly cooked fresh fish dishes and the large value-for-money fillet steak. The carpaccio of sea bass and panatone are both (in their very different ways) subtly delicious and the hot chocolate pudding will pull any chocolate lover back for more.

Kokoro: authentic Japanese curry in the Saudi capital
If you are looking for an authentic taste of Japanese curry in Riyadh, look no further than Kokoro. Nestled in Al-Yasmeen district, this cozy restaurant has made its way from Alkhobar and quickly captured the hearts of curry enthusiasts. On entering Kokoro, you are transported into a minimalist Japanese setting that feels like stepping into a traditional home. The ambiance is warm and inviting, enhanced by the friendly staff who make you feel at home. Kokoro specializes in Japanese curry, offering a delightful departure from the more common Indian curry. The menu features a variety of options, including chicken, shrimp, and beef curry. You will love the Kokoro Special, designed for two at a reasonable price of SR51 (about $14). The curry here is distinctively good, offering a distinctive flavor profile. The spice levels range from 0 to 5. You might start with some appetizers. The gyoza dumplings are a standout. They are perfectly cooked and flavorful, while the sweet potatoes are decent but don't quite impress. For the main course, you might indulge in the chicken Katsu curry, which is crispy and juicy, and never disappoints. The service is impressively fast. Kokoro can get quite busy, so downloading the Requeue app to manage your wait time is recommended. While the line can be long, the food is undoubtedly worth it. You also must try both the shrimp and chicken Katsu; each dish is flavorful and well-spiced. The vibrant flavors and cozy atmosphere here make it a memorable dining experience. Asparagus, German-style
In Germany they love white asparagus, but it's difficult to get here and green asparagus is also good with the traditional German green sauce. You can eat this dish on its own or with new potatoes as well. Ingredients 75g leafy herbs (parsley, chives, sorrel, cress) 100g homemade mayonnaise (or shop-bought if you like) 100g sour cream or crème fraîche 1 shallot, very finely chopped 40g dill pickles, chopped, plus 1 tbsp pickle juice 1 tsp Dijon or German mustard pinch of caster sugar finely grated zest of ¼ lemon, plus lemon juice to taste 2 eggs, hard-boiled and chopped 400g asparagus knob of butter
