Urgent recall for Costco fitness gear after injury reports surge past 100
An urgent recall has been issued for faulty gym equipment sold at Costco after more than 100 injuries were reported.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the voluntary recall of the BowFlex 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells on Thursday.
The CPSC, along with maker Johnson Health Tech Trading, said the recall was necessary 'due to reports that the weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard.'
The weightlifting equipment was sold at Costco as well as other popular stores such as Best Buy and Dick's Sporting Goods.
The recalled items were also sold online via Amazon and BowFlex's own website.
Around 4 million units are effected by the recall, according to the CPSC.
There has been nearly 350 reports of the dumbbell plates dislodging, leading to at least 111 injuries 'such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes or contusions,' the CPSC said.
For consumers that bought their weights at Costco, they may return them to any store and receive a full refund.
If they were purchased from another retailer then users should contact the Johnson Health Tech Trading Customer support team.
'For units sold by BowFlex Inc. (formerly Nautilus Inc.), consumers can request a refund in the form of a prorated voucher and a one-year JRNY digital fitness membership,' the CPSC added.
The gym equipment would have been purchased before May 2024 after BowFlex filed for bankruptcy in March of the same year.
Johnson Health Tech Trading, which took over the bankrupt company, has agreed to cover the costs of the faulty equipment.

The company currently sells a range of at-home gym equipment from weights to reformer Pilates machines.
Costco was recently hit with another recall after more than a million Igloo coolers were reported as unsafe.
It is the latest recall headache for Costco
The recall affects Igloo's 90-quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers, which were sold between January 2019 and January 2025.
Prior to that a huge recall was issued of salmon products sold at the big box retailer.
Tri-Union Seafoods announced the recall on February 7 after its supplier informed the company that the cans' 'easy open' pull tab lids have a manufacturing defect.
The defect could cause the cans to leak or be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which could cause botulism, a form of food poisoning.
