Urgent recall for Costco fitness gear after injury reports surge past 100
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the voluntary recall of the BowFlex 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells on Thursday.
The CPSC, along with maker Johnson Health Tech Trading, said the recall was necessary 'due to reports that the weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard.'
The weightlifting equipment was sold at Costco as well as other popular stores such as Best Buy and Dick's Sporting Goods.
The recalled items were also sold online via Amazon and BowFlex's own website.
Around 4 million units are effected by the recall, according to the CPSC.
There has been nearly 350 reports of the dumbbell plates dislodging, leading to at least 111 injuries 'such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes or contusions,' the CPSC said.
For consumers that bought their weights at Costco, they may return them to any store and receive a full refund.
If they were purchased from another retailer then users should contact the Johnson Health Tech Trading Customer support team.
'For units sold by BowFlex Inc. (formerly Nautilus Inc.), consumers can request a refund in the form of a prorated voucher and a one-year JRNY digital fitness membership,' the CPSC added.
The gym equipment would have been purchased before May 2024 after BowFlex filed for bankruptcy in March of the same year.
Johnson Health Tech Trading, which took over the bankrupt company, has agreed to cover the costs of the faulty equipment.
'We remain committed to providing fitness equipment you can rely on, from brands you trust,' BowFlex said of the recall.
'We look forward to continuing to deliver innovative, quality-driven BowFlex products for years to come, so you can stay focused on what matters most: your fitness journey.'
The company currently sells a range of at-home gym equipment from weights to reformer Pilates machines.
Costco was recently hit with another recall after more than a million Igloo coolers were reported as unsafe.
It is the latest recall headache for Costco
The recall affects Igloo's 90-quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers, which were sold between January 2019 and January 2025.
Prior to that a huge recall was issued of salmon products sold at the big box retailer.
Tri-Union Seafoods announced the recall on February 7 after its supplier informed the company that the cans' 'easy open' pull tab lids have a manufacturing defect.
The defect could cause the cans to leak or be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which could cause botulism, a form of food poisoning.

Tech fans say 'brilliant fit' £18 noise cancelling earbuds work 'as well as Apple Airpods'
Amazon shoppers say these earbuds are ideal for those looking for 'affordability and quality'. For those who enjoy listening to music, audiobooks, or podcasts while out and about, at the gym, or during work, a set of wireless earbuds are an essential item to have in your bag. With the added bonus of not needing to deal with any frustrating wires to connect to your devices, wireless earbuds allow users to get on with their everyday tasks without getting tangled up or needing to be next to their tech all the time. Now while a lot of top tech brands have their own variations of earbuds on the market, they can also come with rather large price tags. Thankfully for those on a budget and don't care for big brand names, Amazon has a variety of affordable devices that still offer great quality, including the Jxrec Wireless Earbuds. And the Jxrec Wireless Earbuds are currently down to £18.99 in a limited time deal from their RRP of £24.99. Said to provide up to 40 hours of playback in total, shoppers will be able to listen to their favourite tunes and podcasters for eight hours on a single charge. Shoppers will also be able to keep an eye on how much power they have left as the handy charging case features an LED display. Additionally if shoppers do run out of charge altogether, once connected to a USB-C, the case will be back to full power in an hour and a half. Jxrev Wireless Earbuds Product Description The earbuds, which come in more than a dozen colour options, are also equipped with environmental noise cancellation (ENC), which cancels or suppresses background noise to make users sound clearer during phone calls. Another set of popular budget earbuds on Amazon is the Btootos Wireless Earbuds, which have nearly 60,000 ratings. Currently dropped from £29.99 down to £19.99, these earbuds come in a variety of fun colours and feature the 5.3 bluetooth chipset for a faster and more stable signal transmission. However, for those wanting to get their hands on a pair of Apple AirPods, Argos currently has a £40 off deal on the Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen. Normally retailing for £229, shoppers can now grab them for £189. Equipped with ANC, shoppers can control how much noise seeps into their listening experience. "Sound, Clear, enjoyable sound for movies, music no booming bass but also no hi hurtful highs very well balance natural sound. no complaints." While another five-star reviewer added: "These work as well as if not better than the Apple ones they replaced. A great price to boot!" However, some shoppers left some mixed reviews. One person said: "The only issue with them is that they are not waterproof, by that I mean I have now washed a few of these headphones in the washing machine and they have yet to survive the process, I must point out I've not done this on purpose, I'm just forgetful!" While another noted: "Bought these for my daughter and she used them pretty solidly for a bit under a year and a half. After about a year then battery life started to tail off and eventually one bud died." Schrödinger stops development of blood cancer therapy after two patient deaths
Aug 14 (Reuters) - Schrödinger (SDGR.O), opens new tab said on Thursday it has stopped the development of an experimental drug after the death of two patients with a type of blood cancer in an early-stage trial, sending its shares down nearly 17% before the bell. The company was testing the therapy, SGR-2921, in patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndromes, a group of blood cancers in which the bone marrow doesn't produce enough healthy blood cells, and its more serious form - acute myeloid leukemia. The drug was considered to have contributed to the deaths of two AML patients in the trial, the company said. "While disappointing given the early clinical activity observed, we believe this is the right decision for patients," Chief Medical Officer Margaret Dugan said. In pre-clinical trial, the therapy showed responses against the cancer, which suggested SGR-2921 could ultimately be used in combination with standard of care treatments, the company said. The experimental drug was designed to work by blocking CDC7, a protein that helps cancer cells repair DNA damage during replication. By inhibiting this protein, the drug causes cancer cells to accumulate fatal levels of DNA damage.
