Drug price transparency kicks in at private clinics and pharmacies, full enforcement by January 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) are implementing the drug price display initiative at private health facilities and community pharmacies in stages starting August 1. According to a joint statement by both ministries, the initiative, which was implemented under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking of Medicines) Order 2025 [P.U.(A) 141/2025] under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, began on May 1. The statement said the educational enforcement approach was implemented in the first three months ending July 31. 'During the period, 842 facilities consisting of medical clinics, dental clinics and private hospitals as well as community pharmacies were inspected and the majority of them have implemented this initiative with 57 per cent of them complying with the requirements for satisfactory drug price display,' according to the statement. In this regard, enforcement will continue in stages from August 1 through educational approach inspections and advocacy for two months until September 30 and a reminder letter may be issued in the event of non-compliance. According to the statement, starting October 1, compounds would be issued for repeat offences before full enforcement on January 1, 2026. MOH and KPDN also took note of the judicial review action filed in the High Court by seven organisations representing medical and dental practitioners and one private medical practitioner regarding the validity of Order PU (A) 141/2025. 'However, until this statement is issued, there is no court order directing the suspension of the implementation or enforcement of this order. Therefore, Order P.U.(A) 141/2025 remains valid and in force,' according to the statement. MOH and KPDN also expressed their commitment to implement the initiative in an inclusive, phased and prudent manner to ensure that its benefits are enjoyed by consumers and contribute to increasing transparency, accountability and trust in the country's health system. — Bernama

Health Ministry completes 12 facilities scheduled for 2025, 29 others ongoing
PUTRAJAYA, June 27 — A total of 12 out of 41 health facility construction projects scheduled for this year under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) have been completed as of June 16, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH). Six of the completed projects will soon be officially handed over by the Works Ministry (KKR), with Pasir Gudang Hospital in Johor scheduled for handover on June 29, it added. 'The remaining 29 projects are currently in the implementation phase,' it said in a statement today, issued in conjunction with the MOH Development Action Council (MTPK) meeting, chaired by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad. The MTPK meeting serves as a platform to review the performance of ongoing development projects, assess their current status and coordinate the direction for the close of 12MP while laying the groundwork for the 13MP. The MOH noted that 2024 marks the final acceleration phase to meet 12MP targets, which allocated RM6.74 billion for the implementation of 290 new projects and 389 continuation projects, bringing the total MOH development allocation since 2021 to RM25.84 billion. As of June 16, MOH's development expenditure performance stood at 26.86 per cent, which remains below the national average of 36.31 per cent, the ministry said. The meeting also addressed the need for firmer measures to ensure all projects are completed on schedule. 'This includes a reassessment of contractors' capabilities by the KKR through the Public Works Department (JKR) as the implementing agency, in order to determine appropriate intervention steps, in addition to more rigorous monitoring,' the statement said. Meanwhile, Dr Dzulkefly expressed appreciation to all parties involved in successfully delivering projects on target, while stressing that any weaknesses or lapses in the management and governance of MOH development projects must be taken seriously. 'The MOH top management and all stakeholders are reminded to carry out their responsibilities transparently, swiftly and with full accountability, without compromising access to or the quality of healthcare services for the people,' he said. — Bernama

WHO chief says 'attacks on health' in Iran-Israel conflict 'appalling'
The WHO's leader on Thursday denounced attacks on health facilities in the Iran-Israel conflict as "appalling," urging all sides to protect hospital buildings, staff, and patients. "The escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran is putting health facilities and access to health care at risk.
