Ethan Coen's 'Honey Don't!' brings Cannes audience to its feet; earns 6.5-minute ovation at premiere

Ethan Coen 's new solo feature, 'Honey Don't!,' brought the 78th Cannes Film Festival to a thunderous conclusion, earning a 6.5-minute standing ovation at its world premiere in the Midnight Screenings section. The dark comedy, starring Margaret Qualley , Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans , and Charlie Day, marks Coen's first feature as a solo director following last year's Drive-Away Dolls, and reunites him with both Qualley and co-writer Tricia Cooke. A festive Cannes reception Premiering at dawn, 'Honey Don't!' received a warm ovation from the Cannes crowd, culminating in a 6.5-minute standing ovation. Coen, being the droll wit that he is, joked to the crowd, "Fun finish to the festival, yah?" He went on to say, "It's short for a movie that began after midnight—very humane!" in a nod to the film's snappy 90-minute running time. A star-studded cast and twisted plot 'Honey Don't!' revolves around Honey O'Donahue (Margaret Qualley), a private eye from a small town who gets sucked into a series of inexplicable deaths surrounding a mysterious church commanded by a smooth preacher, Chris Evans. The supporting cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, Lera Abova, and more, with a promise of offbeat humour and quirky character interactions that have long characterized Coen's films. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Qualley, in regard to her character, characterized Honey as "smooth" and "skillful," easily slipping out of and into situations. "I had to tone down my inherent Scooby-Doo-ness to be a version of myself more suave and sinister," she explained to i-D. "I remember my early twenties when sleuthing was quite rampant on Instagram with me. It's a combination of skill, art, and instinct". A Coen-Cooke collaboration The script for 'Honey Don't!' was written by Ethan Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke, as part of a creative collaboration started with Drive-Away Dolls. Cooke, a veteran collaborator on Coen brothers films, lends her own cutting wit to the screenplay. The film is made by Coen, Cooke, Robert Graf, and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Release plans and expectations Focus Features will open 'Honey Don't!' in theaters across the United States on August 22, 2025, with global distribution by Universal Pictures International. The feature is anticipated to be rated R, consistent with the tone of recent Coen efforts. With its mix of offbeat humour, outstanding cast, and director at the peak of his powers, 'Honey Don't!' is ready to be a standout in a crowded 2025 release schedule. Sasha and Malia Obama's inner circle revealed as the socialite sisters continue to take LA by storm

Sasha Obama and her older sister Malia Obama are fast establishing themselves as the It Girls of Los Angeles. The former first daughters – who are the children of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama – have been spotted attending a string of high-profile events since they moved to the west coast. Malia, 26, relocated to the city in 2021 to pursue a career in screenwriting, while sister Sasha, 23, moved in 2022 so she could attend University of Southern California for her senior year. And since then, the sisters appeared to have embrace every aspect of LA - including having accrued a bunch of celeb friends and rubbing shoulders with the stars. Earlier this week, the siblings were seen attending Destin Conrad's Love on Digital album listening party. At the event, Sasha showed off her toned physique in a cropped white tank top and low-rise denim jeans. With her midriff on full display, she oozed cool girl as she posed with for a snap with older sister Malia and Florida-born R&B singer Destin, 24. Last July, Malia was snapped at Chateau Marmont with friends. The former first daughters have been spotted out and about the city since they moved in 2021 and 2022 respectively Also in attendance at the esteemed residence was Ray Nicholson, the son of singer Kim Petras and Jack Nicholson, who sported a monochrome white look. Malia's long, auburn hair was pulled back into a half up, half down style which showed off a pair of hoop earrings. Two months later, in September 2024, the eldest Obama daughter was seen stepping out for dinner with rapper Anime in Los Angeles. At the time, the couple were caught leaving a sushi restaurant together side-by-side, and at one point, she even interlocked her arm around his. Dressed in all black, the Harvard graduate donned a cropped turtleneck and a leather jacket - which left her midriff on full display. She paired it with a mini skirt, dark leggings, boots, and a small handbag, which she held on to her shoulder. Anime - who is best known for his 2016 single Caroline, which went to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart - opted for a bright green long-sleeve shirt and baggy jeans. Malia had been a longtime fan of the artist's, and he previously told i-D magazine that she had requested to meet him after she attended his performance at Lollapalooza music festival. 'I was doing Lollapalooza for the first time, and it was one of the biggest crowds I've ever performed for,' he recalled to the outlet in 2017. 'I came off stage and a Lollapalooza security guard came up and said, 'Malia Obama would like to speak to you.' She was a super-normal, cool, regular American teen.' In October 2024, Malia and Sasha were seen exiting Billie Eilish's Halloween party held at the exclusive Bird Streets nightclub in West Hollywood. They stuck to a fashionable cowboy theme, with some stand-out features that were sure to make heads turn as they party-hopped in Hollywood. Malia rocked thigh-high black boots to match her black cowboy hat, a denim skirt and white tank-top. Her statement piece was a fake snake wrapped around her shoulders. A temporary barbwire-styled tattoo was placed around her upper arm and one of her hands appeared to be wrapped with white fabric. Sasha, meanwhile, looked fierce as she was photographed holding a clear drink and her phone leaving Billie's bash. The younger Obama wore slouchy brown heeled boots and a long leather coat. She wore a baby blue cropped tee-shirt, tan striped mini shorts and a chunky black belt to tie the look together. Underneath her coat, she seemed to be wearing a cowboy-styled brown vest. Similarly to her sister, Sasha looked like she was wearing her hair down. Among the high-profile guests were Kaia Gerber, The Kid LAROI, Kiernan Shipka and Finneas with his girlfriend Claudia Sulewsk. In August 2023, Malia and Sasha partied until the early hours of the morning at a star-studded celebration hosted by Drake. Once again, the duo was seen at the popular celebrity hotspot The Bird Streets Club as the rapper hosted an after-party following his sold out show with 21 Savage. University of Southern California graduate Sasha looked fashionable in a tiny, black crop top that left her midriff on full display and baggy, gray pants. Her older sister opted for a very-revealing lace-up brown top and high-waisted floral sheer pants, which she paired with a chic clack handbag and platform boots. When the sisters left the elite members-only club at 4 in the morning, it seemed as though they had certainly had a good time. Malia attempted to cover her face from the photographers as the two made their way to a waiting car surrounded by their friends. The previous year, in April 2022, it was revealed that Sasha had found love with then-boyfriend Clifton Powell Jr, the son of Ray actor Clifton Powell and a former college basketball star who now works as a commercial director creating content for brands like Nike and Peloton. Clifton was also close friends with Ian Alexander Jr. – the only son of Powell's Ray co-star Regina King, who tragically took his own life in January at age 25.

Margaret Qualley Teases Ethan Coen & Tricia Cooke's Continued Lesbian B-Movie Trilogy

Despite the lackluster reviews and box office performance of last year's Drive-Away Dolls, Margaret Qualley is re-teaming with Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke. As the 2x Golden Globe nominee reunites with the filmmaking couple on Honey Don't!, she recently teased her role as the titular gay private detective Honey required her 'to be a little more suave than I am, more mysterious,' in the upcoming second installment in their lesbian B-movie trilogy. [Whereas] Honey, she's like honey — she's skillful, she's smooth, she is slipping in and out undetected,' Qualley told i-D, explaining that she had to deny her 'natural Scooby-Doo' instincts in bringing the detective role to life. 'No girl needs to be taught how to be a detective,' she added. 'Women know what's happening even when they don't know what's happening. I remember in my early twenties, especially, my investigative skills on Instagram were really out of control. It's a combination of tools, craft, and gut instinct.' Qualley praised Coen and Cooke, noting that their time collaborating has been 'unlike anything else I've ever known. They respect and love each other so much. I love the world that they're living in.' After the couple revealed that they were making a queer spiritual trilogy that includes both films, Qualley said of the potential third and final installment, 'I have not read a script and I haven't been contacted. But let the record show that if I'm not in [the third film], I will be offended and I will be upset.' Ahead of Drive-Away Dolls' February 2024 release, Deadline exclusively revealed that the trio would next team up for Honey Don't! at Focus Features. Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans are also set to star. According to i-D, Evans plays a questionable church leader at the center of Honey's investigation.
