Deirdre Jacob's dad hopes he will get answers 'one day' 27 years on from disappearance
Michael Jacob made an emotional appeal for information 27 years after his daughter was last seen on Tuesday, July 28 near her home in Roseberry, Newbridge Deirdre Jacob's father has said he hopes the answer to his daughter's disappearance "will come one day'. Michael Jacob made an emotional appeal for information 27 years after his daughter was last seen on Tuesday, July 28 near her home in Roseberry, Newbridge. Deirdre who was only 18-years-old in 1998, had just completed one year at St Mary's University in Twickenham, London. On the day she went missing she had walked into Newbridge to get a bank draft to send to a college friend in London for their rent deposit. She was 5'3' in height with a slim build. She had grey/green eyes and dark, chin-length hair. Deirdre Jacob News in 90 Seconds - Tuesday, July 29 Speaking on Kildare Today, Deirdre's father Michael Jacob said it does not feel like 27 years have passed. "Gardai are just as baffled as we are,' he said, adding that he often wonders where "those years have gone". However, he added that he knows in his heart that the "answer will come one day". Gardai previously outlined a timeline of the last moments Deirdre had been seen. At 2.14pm Deirdre was observed on CTTV walking on Main Street Newbridge. Four minutes later, at approximately 2.18pm she is observed in the AIB bank getting a £100 bank draft and leaves a short time later. At 2.26pm Deirdre is again observed again on CCTV queuing in the Post Office Newbridge where she seen at 2.32pm on CCTV speaking with a friend outside. At 2.35pm the last sighting of Deirdre is recorded on CCTV, walking outside the PTSB Bank on Main Street, Newbridge. Deirdre was last seen shortly after 3pm near her family home outside Newbridge. When she went missing on July 28, 1998, Deirdre was wearing a navy, V-neck t-shirt with a white trim on the collar and sleeves, navy or black straight jeans and blue Nike runners. Deirdre's parents Michael and Bernie Deirdre was carrying a distinctive black satchel type bag with long shoulder straps and the word CAT in large yellow capital letters on the side. The black satchel bag has never been located. On the 20th anniversary of her disappearance An Garda Síochána confirmed that the missing person investigation had been upgraded to a murder investigation. An Garda Síochána has submitted an investigation file on the murder of Deirdre Jacob to the Director of Public Prosecutions. No prosecution has been directed to date. The murder investigation continues to be conducted by gardaí from the Kildare Garda District, under a Senior Investigating Officer and with the available support of other resources from An Garda Síochána including the Serious Crime Review Team, as required. An incident room remains in place at Kildare Garda Station and An Garda Síochána regularly update Deirdre's parents, Michael and Bernadette and her family through a designated Family Liaison Officer. In 2022 it was revealed that convicted rapist Larry Murphy would not face charges in relation to the 1998 kidnap and murder of the teenager. A file on the case, with new evidence, was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in 2021. However, after new evidence was reviewed it was determined that charges would not be brought against the 'Beast of Baltinglass' who is a suspect in the crime. In 2018, her disappearance was upgraded to murder with gardai saying that they had received vital new "credible and corroborated" information that led to Larry Murphy becoming the chief suspect in the murder of the 18-year-old. Two years later in February 2020, gardaí prepared all their evidence in the case and sent a file linking Murphy to the murder of Deirdre Jacob to the Director of Public Prosecutions. In 2021 the DPP sent their file to a specialist barrister for a "second opinion" on the case. However, gardai told the Sunday World in 2022: 'As part of this investigation, a file was forward to the DPP and recently returned with a direction of 'no prosecution'.' Deirdre's family and Garda investigation team urge any person or persons with information in relation to the murder of Deirdre Jacob to please come forward. An Garda Síochána are reminding the public that if you have information about Deirdre's murder, not to assume that we already know it, or that is has limited value. Anyone with information in relation to this investigation should contact the investigation team at Kildare Garda Station at 045 521222, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Man charged over Ballymena riots claims gang of youths egged him into attacking cops
But judge denies bail to 56-year-old with more than 100 previous convictions A man with more than 100 convictions charged over rioting in Ballymena was egged into it by a gang of masked youths, a court has been told. Robert McDowell was arrested on June 12 after violence in the town the previous night. Belfast High Court was told police had come under attack with masonry, bottles and petrol bombs during 'racially motivated public disorder involving hundreds of people'. According to the prosecution, 56-year-old McDowell threw bottles at police lines. The defendant, from Patrick Place in the town, was charged with rioting after his arrest. He was allegedly seen wearing a green camouflage jacket with masked youths throwing fireworks and masonry at police. Footage is said to show McDowell, from Patrick Place in the town, putting on a balaclava beforehand. According to the defendant, a gang of youths handed him this balaclava. The court was told that after he was arrested the following day, he admitted throwing bottles, saying he had acted 'out of stupidity'. A prosecuting lawyer called on the judge to refuse McDowell bail. 'There are still peaceful protests ongoing, and the concern is that, if released on bail, this man will be tempted into the same situation,' they said. Defence counsel Stephen Law accepted that with his client having amassed 114 convictions over 40 years, 'it's a difficult application for bail', adding only that McDowell wished to get back to his vulnerable daughter. Mr Justice Humphries denied bail. McDowell will appear before court again on a date yet to be fixed. Robert McDowell Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 27th

Man pepper sprayed at Longitude after calling garda ‘c**t', urinated in a cell
Paul Davis (38) pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to criminal damage at Rathfarnham Garda Station A 'highly intoxicated' man who was pepper sprayed at Longtitude after aggressively calling a garda a c**t before going on to urinate in his cell has told a court that cannabis 'isn't a drug'. Paul Davis (38), of Deanstown Road, Finglas, Dublin 11, pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to criminal damage at Rathfarnham Garda Station and to threatening and abusive behaviour and intoxication in a public place at Marlay Park on June 29, 2024. The court heard Davis was highly intoxicated at the festival when Gardaí observed him arguing with security staff around 5:55pm. He was slurring his speech and acting in an aggressive and confrontational manner. When approached by Garda Stephen Walsh and asked to calm down, Davis called the garda a 'c**t' repeatedly and continued to be aggressive. He was pepper sprayed and arrested before being brought to Rathfarnham Garda Station. While in custody, he urinated on a cell door. The court heard that Davis has 54 previous convictions, including those for public order and criminal damage. The court had previously heard in May that Davis had been drug-free for 10 months, regularly attended AA and NA meetings, and was engaging with Cuan Mhuire services. However, he later admitted to the Probation Service that he still smokes cannabis daily and was found unsuitable for community service. When asked to explain this in court, Davis said: 'Cannabis isn't a drug - it's a plant.' Judge Patricia McNamara responded: 'Oh, well then you think heroin is just a plant?' Davis replied: 'Well no, heroin is chemicalised.' Judge McNamara said: 'There are plenty of chemicals in cannabis too. There are chemicals in it you'd find under your kitchen sink - it's not some little plant growing from your windowsill. You could be smoking rat poison." Davis was arrested at Longitude in Marlay Park. News in 90 Seconds - July 26th She added: 'That kind of attitude shows a complete naivety about drugs. Those are the kinds of plants that will ruin your life.' Davis paid €105 in court to cover the cost of cleaning the cell. Judge McNamara convicted Davis and imposed a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, while she also fined him €200, with four months to pay. She told him he must remain of sober habits and abstain from all illicit or non-prescribed drugs during the suspended period. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.

Daniel O'Donnell addresses ‘strange' story that wife Majella is pregnant at 65
Country music legend Daniel O'Donnell calls for action as he highlights the latest social media fraud involving his wife DANIEL O'Donnell says he has spotted many fake and sensational stories about himself and his family on social media – but the most bizarre is a new one claiming his wife Majella is pregnant at the age of 65. In an exclusive interview, the country music superstar also hit out at Facebook and other social media platforms that are failing to crack down on criminals targeting his fans. Daniel, who has highlighted this issue in the past, was speaking out after TV presenter Elaine Crowley this week exposed a social media scam claiming she had lost weight by giving up three foods – and posting a fake photo of Virgin Media's popular Ireland AM host in a bid to lure potential victims. In his own case, Daniel tells how one 'vulnerable' woman in America was conned out of thousands of dollars after believing that the person she was in contact with was him and was convinced they were going to have a relationship. Daniel says: 'People think it's me that they are talking to on Facebook and it's very plausible. A lot of the time (the scam) is that I am going to meet them and they are going to come away with me. They send on thousands. I know of one particular person in America that got caught up in this. 'A lot of people are vulnerable and there are people who believe that. Sometimes people hang on to the strangest thread, no matter how weak it is. 'They are the people who fall prey to the scammers and they are sending the money, which they think is to me because this is the way it's all going to work. 'Eventually, they realise that this is not a real person at all, it's not a real account and they can't find the person. Their money is gone and there doesn't seem to be anything they can do about it, which is ridiculous. 'Surely to God, when they can send people to space, they should be able to find out who owns a Facebook page.' Singer Daniel O'Donnell and his wife Majella Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 20th As well as the scams, Daniel pointed out that he, along with many other celebrities, has been at the centre of numerous false and outlandish stories on Facebook and elsewhere on the internet. 'At the minute there are all kinds of stories going up about all sorts of strange things,' he says. 'Last week Majella was pregnant at 65. It's so ridiculous you'd hope people wouldn't believe it. 'Majella laughed when she saw it because it is hilarious. As bizarre stories go, that one is top of the tree. 'In another story I was at death's door and pictured in a hospital bed. Englebert Humperdinck had a similar story and had to make a public statement that he was perfectly healthy. Cliff (Richard) has had similar stories. 'I've seen other fake stories about our family, including one about Michael (Majella's son) saying that he couldn't have had a better stepfather and all I did for him, but, unfortunately, he couldn't live under the same roof, which is ridiculous. 'If you try to find out the source of these stories I just think you are on a road to nowhere. There doesn't seem to be any legislation about Facebook at all.'
