Miami Dolphins' Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson address practice altercation: 'Brotherly love'

CHICAGO — Shortly after Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks began answering questions about an incident with teammate Tyrel Dodson, the latter stood up right next to Brooks to join the chat with media. Brooks and Dodson had a fiery altercation at the Dolphins' recent joint practice with the Bears, two days before Miami's preseason opener. "Wasn't no disagreement," Brooks said. "My dawg right here, man, with us. Fight all the time. So anybody got kids, they fight all the time. That's all. That was man, brotherly love, man." Former Dolphin Terron Armstead said on his podcast that Brooks was challenging Dodson to more physically bring down a Bears player. "I mean it's practice," Dodson said. "It's a thud tempo, so we can't worry about what others do. We have our own discipline and stuff like that. So we can only have our standard, which is our standard. If it's thud, it's thud. It's no tackling. So that's what it is." Bears defenders were seen tackling, shoving and throwing down Miami offensive players. Jaylen Waddle was injured after he was hit by a Bears player in practice. Mike McDaniel: Jaylen Waddle had injury after Bears practice hit Coach Mike McDaniel did not reveal details of the injury, which kept Waddle out of the preseason opener. McDaniel also revealed he was not thrilled to hear about the Brooks-Dodson incident. At the time, McDaniel was on the Dolphins' offensive practice field. "I'm not pumped about the front part of it, but I also knew that the people that were engaged in it, they came up to me and explained what happened," McDaniel said. "And the biggest thing is they took the time to apologize to the team." McDaniel hopes there is a positive outcome. "They knew it wasn't to our standard and what we're about," McDaniel said. "And so they were accountable with their teammates and I think into the team. So overall, I think it was something that was family business that families go through." Jordyn Brooks-Tyrel Dodson scuffle not up to Miami 'standard' In the locker room after the game, Brooks said he knows what Dodson can do. "That was part of what the scuffle was about," Brooks said. "Knowing his abilities to do everything out there on the football field." Brooks was asked which linebacker is the big brother. "Definitely me," Brooks said. In the preseason game, Dodson made a tackle to get Miami's defense off the field in the first quarter. Brooks enthusiastically celebrated with him. "That was awesome," Brooks said. "You know what I mean? Getting off the field, being extra physical, getting off down. It had me excited. Anytime we get off the field, I'm excited." Miami Dolphins weren't great vs. Bears but Mike McDaniel's action opened eyes

LAKE FOREST, IL ― We'll tell you how Tua Tagovailoa had three interceptions and Alexander Mattison fumbled twice. We'll tell you how the Miami Dolphins' offensive line play was uneven against an aggressive and physical Chicago Bears defense. But what we're really here to tell you — did you see that?!?! — is that Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel injected himself right into a scrap to help break things up during the Dolphins' joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Aug. 8. McDaniel was furious, feisty and fired up. And he did not hesitate to jump right into that mass of humanity, testosterone, pushing and flailing. He did not emerge with any blood—– see Mike Vrabel — but this still made a point. Leadership moment from Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel "He's the best leader on the team so I expect it from him," cornerback Kendall Sheffield said of McDaniel. "(McDaniel) thinks fights are a waste of time," guard James Daniels said. As one might expect, this practice was chippy and physical and featured pushing, shoving and some punches thrown. "An NFL camp practice," safety Minkah Fitzpatrick said. "Everybody has a chip on their shoulder. You've got guys fighting for roster spots. You've got guys trying to feed their families. It's gonna be aggressive. It's gonna be passionate. Obviously, you don't want to see anyone get hurt, but it gets chippy, it gets feisty." In the most notable scrum, it seemed Dolphins receiver Dee Eskridge and safety Kevin Byard were involved. It can be hard to tell exactly who did what. Tyreek Hill injured but helped break up fight Everyone converged and here came Tyreek Hill (out with an oblique injury) and Terron Armstead (retired but in attendance), to help break things up, too. And the sight of McDaniel in there truly was wild. Anyhow, we'll let you know that linebacker Jordyn Brooks had an interception and made a few plays, cornerback Jack Jones made a few plays and linebacker Tyrel Dodson, too. Miami's defense better than offense vs. Bears Miami's defense was better than its offense on this day. The offensive performance was a bit disjointed and out of sync. Things to clean up, as they say. Miami's defense was on edge and keyed by Brooks, the emerging middle linebacker leader. Some observers said they saw Brooks in a heated moment with a teammate. "Today, he was holding people to a high standard," Fitzpatrick said of Brooks. "And it becomes confrontational. But I think that's necessary when you do anything to a high standard. So he's a guy I appreciate playing with." As for McDaniel playing ultimate fighting referee? Fitzpatrick smiled at the notion. "I appreciate it," Fitzpatrick said through a grin. "But I think we can get it separated ourselves." Tyreek Hill injury: Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniel: Tyreek has oblique injury; will starters play Sunday? Chargers cancel joint practice with Rams because of injuries

The Chargers-Rams joint practice planned for Wednesday has been canceled as the Chargers focus on keeping their players healthy. Rams coach Sean McVay said Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh decided injury concerns were too great to justify a joint practice. "Unfortunately we'll have to cancel that practice with the Chargers," McVay said. "I think they're a little banged up. Talked to Coach Harbaugh. Bummer that we weren't able to get that done, but I totally understand, and we'll figure out a way to get great work against ourselves." The Chargers' most notable injury was to left tackle Rashawn Slater, who is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon, but he's not the only injured Charger. On Saturday multiple players limped off the practice field, including offensive lineman Branson Taylor and cornerback Donte Jackson. The Chargers were the first team to open training camp and are playing an extra preseason game because they were in the Hall of Fame Game, so Harbaugh may think his team needs some additional time off.

49ers and Broncos hold joint practice, Hufanga and Greenlaw reunite with former teammates

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Talanoa Hufanga playfully threw some jabs at Trent Williams and talked trash with former teammates, Mike McGlinchey relished some one-on-reps with Nick Bosa and Dre Greenlaw exchanged some hugs with Kyle Shanahan. When the Broncos came to town for a joint practice against the San Francisco 49ers that was a valuable preparation tool for the season there was even more meaning for some of the former Niners who now call Denver home. 'I wouldn't say it was emotional. I was very happy,' said Hufanga, the former All-Pro safety who signed with the Broncos this offseason. 'I was super excited to go. I'm talking to every guy during the rep. I'm running up to Christian (McCaffrey) just yelling at him while I'm running. Those are the fun times.' Greenlaw didn't get to practice as he is still nursing a quadriceps injury, but he did make the trip and got to see plenty of former teammates. 'I got a lot of time to talk with him,' Niners linebacker Fred Warner said. 'I know he wanted to be out there suited up, but he's got his own plan going right now. But obviously love being around Dre, love him to death. Obviously still wish he was on our side, but hey, it's his turn to kind of be the guy over there. Obviously I wish him nothing but success.' While Hufanga and Greenlaw had plenty of former teammates in Niners uniforms after playing in San Francisco last season, there has been significantly more turnover since McGlinchey and Jones last played with the 49ers. McGlinchey said he did get to catch up with former teammates and coaches on the offensive line, but the defensive front was almost entirely new outside of Bosa. 'I did it for four years so it is very good work,' he said. 'He's one of the best in the world at what he does. Certainly any time you get to have the opportunity to go against competition like that, it's very helpful.' The practice that was scripted by Broncos coach Sean Payton and Shanahan was heavy work on situational work, including plenty of work on the two-minute drill, red zone and third downs. Denver got the edge on both sides of the ball early in practice with Bo Nix making some big plays on offense and the defensive line being disruptive defensively. The 49ers did respond late, especially on offense with Purdy throwing TD passes to Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson. 'We're here to learn. We're not here to come here and be perfect,' Hufanga said. 'Everybody strives to be perfect, don't get me wrong. But if we came in here and we beat them every single rep, then there's no growth in that.' The practice was intense, but went off without any serious scuffles. There was one minor dustup during special teams when Broncos rookie receiver Joaquin Davis got into a jawing match with some 49ers, but that was the extent of it. 'That was Sean's number one message,' McGlinchey said. 'He's like, 'We're not flying across the country getting fights. We're going to play football, we are going to do a clean operation, we're going to do our job, and that's what we're here to do.' The teams will take Friday off before playing the exhibition opener on Saturday night. Payton said he plans to give most of his starters some work in the game, while Shanahan said only a handful of his top-line players might get into the game for the Niners. Mykel Williams leaves with injury Niners first-round defensive end Mykel Williams left practice early after injuring his left knee. Shanahan said the initial report was that Williams hyperextended the knee and he likely would miss about a week. Williams has played well so far in practice and is slated to start this season. Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott was out with a back injury but could return next week. Rookie running back Jordan James had surgery on a broken finger and will miss a couple of weeks. ___ AP NFL: Josh Dubow, The Associated Press
