Cassidy Conn and Connor Laird claim Great Lakes Junior Golf Tour's match play titles
CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS — Cassidy Conn took the fifth on July 3. It had nothing to do with legal self-incrimination for the Fort LeBoeuf student. It did, though, have everything to do with the hole number where she clinched first place for the girls bracket of the Great Lakes Junior Golf Tour's Match Play Tournament. Advertisement Conn, a junior-to-be for the Bison, won that portion of the two-day competition with a shot both dramatic and abrupt. She defeated Cora Hirz 2 and 1 thanks to a chip-in birdie on Riverside Golf Club's par-4 fifth hole. Cassidy Conn watches her tee shot for the fourth hole of Cambridge Springs' Riverside Golf Club on Thursday. Conn, a Fort LeBoeuf student, defeated Cora Hirz 2 and 1 in the girls final for the Great Lakes Junior Golf Tour's Match Play Tournament. Connor Laird, like Conn, was victorious by the final match score. The Cathedral Prep returnee defeated Meadville's Luke Ferry for first place in the boys bracket. Cameron Smith to drive investment in Australian golf's next gen through his LIV golf franchise
Cameron Smith's famous mullet won't just be seen on the fairways of Augusta National or St Andrews – it will now be seen all over Australian courses in kids playing golf. Smith, the 2022 British Open champion and Australia's most recognisable golfing star, has used his LIV Golf franchise, Ripper GC, to inspire the next generation of kids to take up the sport. From July 1, Ripper GC will partner with Australia's official junior introductory program, MyGolf. The groundbreaking partnership comes with a significant financial investment aimed to help as many kids follow in Smith's footsteps as possible. The popularity of golf has soared since Covid, with the sport one of the few that was able to be played safely at the height of the pandemic. More than 40,000 MyGolf registered players took to a course during the 2024-25 financial year, a 10 per cent increase on the previous 12 months. The number of girls participating jumped 20 per cent. Kids aged between five and 12 who sign up for MyGolf will now be known as Little Rippers. 'The long-term vision of the partnership between MyGolf and Ripper GC is to get as many Aussie kids playing golf as we can,' Smith said. 'Golf is definitely on the rise at the moment and everyone at Ripper GC and Golf Australia want to see it grow even bigger in the future with more kids with clubs in their hand.' Smith is head of the all-Australian Ripper GC franchise featuring Marc Leishman, Lucas Herbert and Matt Jones, the quartet playing worldwide events on the LIV Golf circuit, including its most popular in Adelaide. The quartet won last year's LIV Golf teams' championship and have passionately spoken of wanting to increase the profile of the sport in Australia. Smith will tee it up at the British Open at Royal Portrush next month alongside at least seven other Australians hoping to win his second major championship. Australia's best female golfer, Minjee Lee, created history when she won the Women's PGA Championship in Texas last weekend. It was her third major win, with Karrie Webb (seven) and Peter Thomson (five) the only Australian golfers to boast more major wins.

‘I want to show other girls what is possible in golf'
Aaliyah Hryniewiecka-Irwin was 'shocked and excited' when her mother told her that her superb first round at the prestigious Fairhaven Trophy had set the pace on the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship girls' leaderboard. Though now placed second behind Erin Huskie, the Huddersfield ace's 71 could help her reach the 35th girls' final later this year, which would be her final tournament as a junior should she make the cut. She eventually finished tied third at April's Fairhaven Trophy, in between top 25 finishes at the Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open and Welsh Open Youths, where she was also the best-placed female. But it is closer to home where Hryniewiecka-Irwin has been breaking down inclusivity boundaries in the women's game. Last year, when she was 16, the Crosland Heath member became the first female player to compete in the Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union's scratch league after a rule change allowing for a dual-gender competition. Hryniewiecka-Irwin now says that other leagues should follow suit and allow mixed gender competitions. 'One hundred per cent, and it opens everything for women,' she says. 'It's nice to feel more inclusion within the sport, as golf is still often seen as quite old-fashioned. It's definitely improving, though. When I played in that scratch team it was an unreal feeling as I was the first female to play in the men's team [she teed it up for her club in a Division One fixture and duly won her match two and one]. It brings a lot more inclusion and hopefully more women will start playing golf,' she adds. Born in Northern Ireland, she moved to Yorkshire two years later and studies at Huddersfield New College. Last August she won a mixed-gender Faldo Series qualifier, which secured her spot at the grand final in the UAE, where she placed in the top 25. It was a career highlight which could be surpassed by competing for the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship title at Quinta do Lago this winter. She adds: 'It would be an amazing experience and a great opportunity that any person would want to take up.'

Kai Trump and Charlie Woods endure very different days at South Florida golf tournament
With two of their parents dating each other, all eyes were on the children of Tiger Woods and Vanessa Trump at a junior golf tournament in Florida. Charlie Woods, Tiger's son, teed off in the 41st edition of the Nicklaus Junior Championship.- Also teeing off was Kai Trump, the daughter of Vanessa and Donald Trump Jr, and the granddaughter of President Donald Trump. The two-round tournament wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon at the private Tequesta Country Club - located north of the pro golf enclave of Jupiter. Charlie finished even-par for the tournament with a final round 69 (2-under) to place sixth in a field of 122 boys golfers. Meanwhile, Kai struggled to a final round score of a 3-over 74, putting her 17-over for the tournament and tied for 21st out of 32 golfers. Both Charlie and and Kai are in high school - with Kai already committed to play golf at the University of Miami as a part of their Class of 2030. Charlie, on the other hand, is starting to make a name for himself after a notable win on the junior golf circuit which saw his ranking jump from No. 606 to No. 14. It's been an eventful year for the Woods family after Tiger went public with his relationship with Vanessa Trump. That announcement came 10 days after exclusively broke the news that the golf icon was dating Donald Trump Jr.'s ex-wife. Alongside two pictures of the loved-up couple, Woods wrote: 'Love is in the air and life is better with you by my side! We look forward to our journey through life together. 'At this time we would appreciate privacy for all those close to our hearts.' The couple have the blessing of the President, with Trump himself saying he was happy when he learned that they had become an item. 'He told me about it, and I said, 'Tiger, that's good, that's good. I'm very, happy for both.' But they just let them both be happy. Let them both be happy. They're both great,' Trump said. The relationship has the blessing of the president - Trump paid tribute to the pair of them 'I love Tiger and I love Vanessa. He and I have a very special, very good relationship with Tiger. I played golf with him a couple of times over the last month, and he's a fantastic guy and a fantastic athlete.' Additionally, Tiger's mother, Kultida, passed away in February - a devastating blow as the matriarch of the Woods family died at the age of 80. 'At this time we would appreciate privacy for all those close to our hearts.' Tiger himself has been absent from the course after suffering an injury to his Achilles as he prepared for the Masters back in April. However, he was recently seen without a brace on his knee riding a golf cart while watching Charlie.
