Skokie, Illinois police release both people apprehended after Old Orchard shopping center security scare
The two people arrested after a security scare that prompted a lockdown at the Westfield Old Orchard shopping center in Skokie, Illinois this week. "After reviewing video surveillance and conducting interviews, no criminal charges were filed against the two detained individuals," Skokie police wrote Wednesday. "No one is in police custody regarding this incident, and the investigation has been concluded." At 2:33 p.m. Tuesday, Skokie police were called for a person with a gun near the mall. A temporary lockdown was put into place. Upon arrival, police determined a quarrel between two people was the cause of the security scare. Both were located and apprehended, police said. Once a police investigation determined there was no further threat, and no injuries or shots fired in connection with the events, the lockdown was lifted, police said. Skokie police did not get into further specifics about why the two people were released.

Horror as nursery plunged into lockdown after two killed in quadruple stabbing at central London business
PARENTS have opened up after a horrifying, quadruple stabbing plunged a nearby nursery into lockdown. Emergency services rushed to a local business - near to the nursery -at 1pm on Monday, after four people were attacked. 2 2 Four people were stabbed in total, with two sadly passing away from their injuries. A 58-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and a 27-year-old man later died in hospital. Police have detained a man in connection with the incident, who is now in critical condition in hospital. The fourth man reportedly sustained injuries which were not life threatening. The horrifying incident has left the community shaken, particularly after a nearby nursery was plunged into lockdown. One mum opened up about the horrifying moment that she heard about the stabbing near Long Lane in Southwark. Choosing to remain anonymous, she told MailOnline: "[The nursery] sent us an alert while I was at work saying that there'd been a stabbing and that the roads would be cordoned off. "It's terrifying. When I walked down to the nursery I was trying to find out information about whether it was targeted or random, because you hear a lot about stabbings in London." She added: "It's really shocking. To have this in an area where I'm raising a child makes me worry that I shouldn't be living somewhere like this now that we have a family." Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who leads policing for the area, said: "Our investigation is in the early stages and we are working hard to understand the full circumstances of this shocking incident. "At this point, we do not believe it to be terrorism-related and there is no further risk to the public. "There will be a heavy police presence in the area throughout today and I would encourage anyone with information to speak with officers or contact the Met by other means." At the time, a spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: 'We were called at 1.04pm today to reports of a stabbing on Long Lane, SE1. 'We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, incident response officers, a command support vehicle and paramedics from our tactical response unit. "We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance, which consisted of a paramedic and a doctor in a car. 'We treated four people at the scene. We took three patients to major trauma centres as a priority. "Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.' Like us on Facebook at @TheSun.

Gunman shot dead in Midtown Manhattan, reports say police officer among victims
NEW YORK, July 29 — A gunman was dead Monday following a shooting in central Manhattan, New York police said, amid reports a police officer was killed and several civilians struck, provoking a lockdown in the area. Mayor Eric Adams said on X the officer had been 'struck down' and expressed his 'deepest sympathies' to the family of the officer, although a department spokeswoman said she could neither confirm nor deny an officer had been killed. Police wrote on X that the scene, around Park Avenue and East 51st Street, had been 'contained and the lone shooter is dead,' without providing details about the identity of the suspect. 'At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralised,' police commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote on X amid reports of several people being shot. She gave no other details about the incident. Fox News, citing the New York Police Department, reported that at least six people including a police officer were shot, with the officer in a critical condition in an area hospital. Police officers deployed a drone near Park Avenue at the height of the evening rush-hour as dozens of officers swarmed the area, some carrying long guns and others wearing ballistic vests. A number of ambulances had gathered in the vicinity and several helicopters hovered above the scene. Police repeatedly pushed back journalists and members of the public who gathered to see what was happening in the normally calm but busy area of Midtown Manhattan. The area is home to several five-star business hotels, as well as a number of corporate headquarters, including Colgate Palmolive and KPMG, the auditor. Earlier the mayor had told New Yorkers that 'there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.' — AFP

Edinburgh's first 'queer cafe' announces closure as owners say 'this is only the beginning'
Edinburgh's first "queer cafe" has announced that they will be closing their doors for good this September. Kafe Kweer opened back in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but with their lease set to end on Monday, September 1, they have made the decision to close for good after five years of service. Sharing the news on social media, owners Oskar and Zak wrote: "Our lease ends on 1st September, and with this we have made the tough decision to shut our doors after 5 incredible years on that date. We do this entirely on our own terms, recognising a coinciding shift in our personal lives, creative goals, rising costs, and beyond. READ MORE: Edinburgh St James Quarter worker claims 'things weren't being maintained' READ MORE: Edinburgh bingo hall imposes strict new rules as manager left 'absolutely disgusted' "Kafe Kweer started as a manic project at the height of lockdown, after we saw a Facebook post advertising a small shop looking for new management. "Everything was so uncertain at this time that we decided to just GO for it, with zero expectations and lots of risk. We thought we'd be lucky to last a year. And here we are exactly five years later, despite COVID, Brexit, cost of living crises, and being located in a quiet part of town." But this isn't the end of Kafe Kweer, while they won't have the cafe anymore, the pair want to continue to host their social events and help queer people find community here in Edinburgh. They continued: "Despite closing our physical space, we aim to keep using our platform and network to host some of our social events in other spaces, helping queer people find connection amidst this hostile world, and spreading the news about other local queer events/resources. The ethos and mission of what KK is about is more than one single shop could ever do, and we plan on continuing to be a hub for Edinburgh's queer community in one way or the other! "We close our doors in September with our heads held high and our hearts very full with the love you've given us over the years. We know this'll be sad news for many, and it's a sad decision for us, but we believe in doing what we've always done: adapting and evolving. "We'd ask that you all come see us this August for our last month open. We'll be selling a lot of our stock at bargain prices , hosting Fringe shows every afternoon, and probably crying a lot. "This is only the beginning. Queer joy forever." Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages.
