Gunman shot dead in Midtown Manhattan, reports say police officer among victims
Mayor Eric Adams said on X the officer had been 'struck down' and expressed his 'deepest sympathies' to the family of the officer, although a department spokeswoman said she could neither confirm nor deny an officer had been killed.
Police wrote on X that the scene, around Park Avenue and East 51st Street, had been 'contained and the lone shooter is dead,' without providing details about the identity of the suspect.
'At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralised,' police commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote on X amid reports of several people being shot. She gave no other details about the incident.
Fox News, citing the New York Police Department, reported that at least six people including a police officer were shot, with the officer in a critical condition in an area hospital.
Police officers deployed a drone near Park Avenue at the height of the evening rush-hour as dozens of officers swarmed the area, some carrying long guns and others wearing ballistic vests.
A number of ambulances had gathered in the vicinity and several helicopters hovered above the scene.
Police repeatedly pushed back journalists and members of the public who gathered to see what was happening in the normally calm but busy area of Midtown Manhattan.
The area is home to several five-star business hotels, as well as a number of corporate headquarters, including Colgate Palmolive and KPMG, the auditor.
Earlier the mayor had told New Yorkers that 'there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.' — AFP

Post-mortem confirms six-year-old Johor boy buried in Jempol strangled with cable tie; police recover hoe used to dig grave
REMBAU, July 29 — Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof confirmed that a six-year-old boy whose body was discovered buried in a remote area in Rompin, Jempol, was killed by strangulation with a cable tie, following a post-mortem at Rembau Hospital. 'The autopsy revealed the boy died due to pressure from a cable tie around his neck,' he said when contacted by Bernama today, adding that the case is now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The investigation first began under Johor police jurisdiction, classified under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 323/18 of the Domestic Violence Act and Missing Persons procedures. Ahmad Dzaffir said the suspect is still in remand in Johor, but will be brought to Jempol for further questioning in the coming days. 'We will also be recording statements from witnesses, particularly the victim's mother,' he added. Meanwhile, Jempol police chief Supt Norhisham Mustapar said a hoe, believed to have been used by the suspect to dig the boy's grave, was recovered from a secluded area near Jalan Bahau-Rompin. Police had discovered the victim's body around 4.30 pm yesterday, after a tip-off led them to the burial site. Earlier, Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP M Kumarasan confirmed that a man had been remanded for seven days from July 25 to assist with the murder investigation. The suspect lodged a police report in Bukit Indah on July 24, claiming the boy had gone missing. Kumarasan said the man first told police the child had disappeared around 4 pm on July 23 after being left alone in a car while the suspect went out to buy food. Singapore cops probe 44 over SIM card fraud linked to scams, vice
SINGAPORE, July 29 — Forty-four people are under investigation in Singapore for allegedly registering SIM cards in bulk for use in criminal activities, including scams and vice operations. According to a report in The Straits Times, the police said 31 suspects were arrested during an islandwide operation carried out between July 17 and 25. The blitz was led by officers from the Commercial Affairs Department, Criminal Investigation Department and all seven police land divisions. Those arrested — 21 men and 10 women aged between 16 and 48 — were allegedly paid between S$10 (RM33) and S$15 for each SIM card registered in their name and handed over to a syndicate. Another 13 individuals, aged between 16 and 57, are assisting with investigations. Police believe each person supplied between 31 and 49 postpaid SIM cards, obtained across different retailers and later delivered to couriers. The cards, including eSIMs, were then used to mask communications linked to unlicensed moneylending, vice and scam networks. Those convicted of knowingly providing fraudulently registered SIM cards for criminal use face up to three years' jail, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.
