Girl on Disney cruise fell through porthole as dad jumped to save her in 20-minute fight for survival: police
A dramatic ocean rescue ensued from the father of a 5-year-old girl who lost her balance while sitting on a railing and fell through a porthole, authorities revealed. The rescue unfolded around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 29 on Deck 4 of the Disney Dream ship while it was in international waters between the Bahamas and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Sheriff's Department confirmed to Fox News Digital. Investigators said the child was sitting on a railing near a porthole when she fell backward into the ocean. After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. BSO detectives said after the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by Disney Cruise Line rescue personnel on a tender that was launched from the ship. The department said that the total time from the young girl's accidental fall to the rescue was about 20 minutes. Security footage from the ship corroborated the family's account of the accident, which remains under investigation, the department said. WATCH: PASSENGER REACTS TO RESCUE The ship's crew sprang into action, launching a rescue operation that BSO officials credited to their rigorous man-overboard training. Dewayne Smith, another passenger, wrote on Facebook that "Man Over Board" rang across the loudspeaker as rescue teams sprang into action. "Lots of praying folks on this ship! Both the little girl and dad were both successfully rescued!" he wrote. In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson confirmed the successful rescue: "The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes." "We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols," they said. Fox News Digital has reached out to Disney Cruise Line for additional comment. Once rescued, the father and daughter duo were checked by the ship's medical staff. After the ship safely arrived Monday at Port Everglades, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported them to an area hospital. The father was hospitalized, but details of his injuries were not released. The sheriff's department noted that the family lives out of state, and they are not releasing their names nor where they live. "This family is so blessed. It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome," the sheriff's department said.

Disney cruise passenger details rescue of two fellow guests: 'Brought me to tears'
Jenn Young was in her Disney Cruise Line cabin with her mother when they heard an announcement about an 'M.O.B.' on Sunday. 'My mom and I looked at (each other) and were like, 'That's got to be bad' because they made an announcement in our stateroom,' Young, 42, told USA TODAY. 'And we Googled what M.O.B. meant.' When they learned it stood for 'man overboard,' the pair, who were on vacation with Young's two daughters, husband and other family members, ran out on their balcony on the Disney Dream. Young saw crew members 'scurrying' up and down the side of the ship and three orange rings being tossed into the water, and the vessel started turning. The ship sent out a rescue boat, she said, and as it returned, the Hinckley, Ohio resident, saw a child and a man onboard, pumping his arm up and down mouthing, 'We're all OK.' The father and daughter were rescued after she fell in and he jumped in after her. 'I mean, it just brought me to tears to see both of them on there, sitting up, moving, conscious, and trying to tell everybody that they're okay,' said Young. "The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water," a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson previously told USA TODAY in a statement. "We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols." Disney did not have additional details to share. Cruises see a fair amount of overboards: Are ships equipped? Disney cruise ships are all equipped with overboard detection systems, which can help cut down response times by notifying crew members. At least one such system developed for vessels or other maritime structures uses thermal cameras and micro radars to detect those kinds of incidents. The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires passenger vessels sailing in the U.S. to "integrate technology that can be used for capturing images of passengers or detecting passengers who have fallen overboard, to the extent that such technology is available." Brian Salerno, then senior vice president of global maritime policy for Cruise Lines International Association, told USA TODAY in 2023 that there weren't reliable products of that type available when the CVSSA was passed. In the years since, a number of companies have worked to create more dependable technology. Salerno said at the time that a number of cruise ships had installed the systems, but many operators have not disclosed that information publicly. Young, who has taken cruises before, said the incident isn't likely to deter her in the future. 'I feel like Disney did a great job,' she said. 'I feel like they have great safety precautions in place.' This story was updated to add new information. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville. Father jumps off Disney cruise ship to save five-year-old daughter
A father whose daughter fell from a 14-deck Disney Cruise ship jumped into the ocean to try and save her. Footage posted on social media showed the father clinging to his daughter while treading water for 10 minutes. The young girl fell from the fourth deck of the Disney Dream as her father took her picture against a railing, witnesses said. The ship was returning to Florida following a four-night cruise in the Bahamas when the emergency code 'Mr MOB', meaning man overboard, sounded over the intercom. A bright yellow rescue boat was quickly lowered into the ocean before jetting off to the pair and pulling them onboard. Fellow passengers then began to clap and cheer as rescue teams returned them to the cruise ship. Laura Amador, a passenger onboard the ship, told CBS News: 'The ship was moving quickly, so quickly. It's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them. 'The captain slowed the ship and turned it around, and then they deployed a tender ship with people on it to go get them, and we saw them rescue the dad and daughter.' Another passenger, Gar Frantz, told NBC News that they watched the two family members enter the ocean before nearly disappearing into the horizon. 'We watched it, you could see two little things... it was crazy, it was horrific,' he said. Given the time of the year, the water in the North Atlantic would have likely felt warm, posing a minimal risk of hypothermia during their short time in the ocean. Disney confirmed in a statement that two passengers were rescued but offered no further details. A Disney Cruise Line spokesman said: 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.' Cruise ships tend to be equipped with overboard detection systems that activate when incidents occur in real time. Some 25 people fell overboard from cruise ships in 2019, with just nine being rescued, according to a Cruise Lines International Association report.

Disney Dream cruise passengers recall horror after girl went overboard & dad jumped in water after her
PASSENGERS on board a Disney Dream cruise ship have spoken of their horror after a little girl went overboard. Travelers recalled hearing loud noises after the girl plunged from the fourth deck of the $900 million ship on Sunday. 3 3 Her dad jumped into the water in a frantic bid to save her. The vessel was en route back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following a four-day trip to The Bahamas when the accident happened just after 11:15am. 'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool,' one traveler, known only as Chandler, told People. 'It was so loud.' Chandler said there was a 'commotion' on the deck of the ship. She recalled hearing what she described as an 'awful' scream from who she thought was the girl's mom. The man overboard alarm was played on the ship's loudspeaker, sparking a frantic rescue operation. Life vests were hurled into the water as rescue crews sprang into action. Chandler shared footage on TikTok that captured the dramatic rescue. A yellow life vessel could be seen bobbing up and down as the girl and dad were rescued and brought back to the cruise ship. Janice Martin-Asque, from Florida, recalled seeing people crowding by the railings. "My daughter asked someone what had happened, and someone said a kid had fallen overboard and that the dad jumped in after her," she told CBC. Shannon Lindholm, who was also on board the ship, said the man gave a thumbs up after being rescued. She said fellow passengers cheered as the father and daughter were brought back onto the ship, as per CBC News. Disney Cruise bosses are probing how the girl fell overboard. It is highly rare for passengers to fall overboard from ships. Only 212 people have fallen overboard between 2009 and 2019, according to a Cruise Lines International Association report. The cruise ship docked in Fort Lauderdale on Monday morning before departing that afternoon. It is currently at sea en route to The Bahamas, as per Cruise Mapper. The vessel will head to Nassau and Disney Lookout Cay before returning back to Florida on July 5. The 15-year-old ship, last refurbished in 2024, can carry between 2,500 and 3,500 passengers, and can reach top speeds of 25mph. 3
