Ellen DeGeneres mocked over new UK home ‘monstrosity'

Ellen DeGeneres has been mocked over her new UK home, with many dubbing the mansion a 'monstrosity'. The comedian and her wife, Aussie actress Portia de Rossi, have moved into a hilltop mansion in Oxfordshire after putting their £15 million ($A31 million) Cotswolds farmhouse on the market. The single-storey house was built by a UK-based developer, who described the glass-fronted house as an attempt to 'redefine rural modern living'. But, the couple's new house left social media users divided. Businessman and utility industry expert Steve Loftus described the property on X as a 'concrete and glass monstrosity'. 'Get the hell out': Ellen's sad goodbye Another described the futuristic home as a 'genuine hate crime'. Others criticised the home for the couple's issues with their farmhouse, including flooding. 'The inside of Ellen DeGeneres' home in the Cotswolds is totally devoid of any personality … which, I mean … Not only did she likely pay a fortune for the build, she also probably paid an 'interior decorator' for this. It looks like a prison,' one person commented. 'She had total control over the design and she went with 'unfinished bunker but with more grey and less functionality'. Says a lot about her personality (or lack thereof),' another wrote. 'I'm struggling to see any 'farmhouse roots'! It's a brutalist bunker,' a third said. Another compared the property to the home of a villain in the James Bond film series. Other X users compared the house to a 'remodelled community college,' a 'factory,' and a 'water treatment plant in Arizona circa 1976'. News of DeGeneres' new home comes after she confirmed she and de Rossi permanently relocated to the UK after Donald Trump's second presidential win. During a conversation with broadcaster Richard Baco, the former talk show host revealed that she and de Rossi initially planned to stay in the UK for a couple of months. The pair bought 'a part-time house' in the Cotswolds, which is a known favourite among the Hollywood elite, the New York Post reports. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in,'' she said. 'And we're like, 'We're staying here.'' The couple proved they were serious about uprooting their lives across the pond after buying a sprawling farmhouse in the hoity-toity area in southwest England, nearly two hours from London, for an eye-popping $US18 million ($A28 million) — some $US3 million ($A4.6 million) over the asking price. Their new rural life includes tending to their horses, chickens and dogs. 'It's absolutely beautiful,' the funnywoman said. 'We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it's just a simpler way of life.' 'It's clean,' she went on. 'Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.' While it appears as though the couple have taken to the English countryside lifestyle without a hitch, it's not all been smooth sailing. Earlier this year, the couple clashed with their British neighbours over an extension at their home. Still, the hiccup didn't stop DeGeneres from selling one of her final properties in the US — prompting her to officially cut ties with her homeland.

Ellen DeGeneres mocked over 'monstrosity' home in UK after melodramatic move to avoid Trump

Ellen DeGeneres has been mercilessly mocked over her new-build home in the English countryside, with furious Brits labelling the mansion a 'monstrosity'. The former talk show host and her partner Portia De Rossi, 52, moved into the hilltop home in Oxfordshire less than a year after swapping the US for the UK to avoid living under the Trump administration. The couple is thought to have moved into the modern home following a series of disasters including flooding at their previous abode, a $20 million (£15 million) Cotswolds farmhouse, which DeGeneres said is now on the market. But the 'beautiful, old' stone farmhouse is a far cry from the glass-fronted house the couple now calls home - with pictures of the couple's new house dividing opinion. Steve Loftus, a businessman and utility industry expert, described the futuristic home as 'a concrete and glass monstrosity.' Other X users likened the house to a 'remodeled community college', a 'factory' and a 'water treatment plant in Arizona circa 1976.' 'The inside of Ellen DeGeneres' home in the Cotswolds is totally devoid of any personality,' said another person, who added: 'It looks like a prison.' The sprawling single-storey house was built by a UK-based developer which described by it as an attempt to 'redefine rural modern living'. 'The inside of Ellen DeGeneres' home in the Cotswolds is totally devoid of any personality,' said one internet critic The couple is thought to have moved into the modern home following a series of disasters including flooding at their previous home The architect specializes in restoring industrial buildings, with the property unrecognizable from the ramshackle farmyard which previously stood on the site. The farmhouse stood empty for many years before it was finally sold as a derelict building only fit for redevelopment to the developer for almost £2million. Planning permission was granted to demolish the farmhouse and erect a 'replacement dwelling' and for the surrounding site to be landscaped. The cost of the home is unknown but reports suggest the TV personality could have bought it for anywhere between $20 million and $27 million. It is made up of five bedrooms and is built around a Japanese style courtyard garden in the centre. Pictures of the interior show a double height living room with exposed beams and minimalistic stone and wooden furnishings. The hilltop position and huge glass windows mean it boats panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. For privacy, the home is said to be set in 100 acres of unspoiled grounds, which the couple have used to keep their small flock of sheep and chickens. It is about a 30-minute drive from their original home and planning documents show it has a 'sustainable drainage system' and is not 'at risk of flooding'. DeGeneres and her wife moved to the Cotswolds last year in the hope that it would be the perfect place to avoid living under the Trump administration A Cotswolds property expert previously told the Mail that 'It's plain that Ellen and Portia love [the house]. 'Everything has been done very discreetly so it's not clear what the terms of the deal was but it seems that it has recently changed hands for not much less than they paid for their previous place. 'To buy two properties for eight figure sums in the space of a few months really is unusual, even given the many multi-millionaires around here.' Vice President JD Vance is set to travel to the idyllic rural area DeGeneres calls home next month, alongside his wife Usha, 39, and their three children next month. The news of his holiday is unlikely to go down well with DeGeneres, who revealed only last week that she had decided to stay in the UK 'for good' because of Trump's re-election. DeGeneres yesterday told an audience pf 700 fans in the Cotswolds that life is 'just better' in the UK and the US election outcome swayed her decision to move. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, "He got in" - and we're like, "We're staying here".' The couple had initially planned to spend a few months a year in the UK, buying and moving into what DeGeneres called a 'part-time house' in November 2024 before deciding to stay. DeGeneres is a well-known collector of 'multi-million dollar homes', according to People, including a $32 million (£24 million) property in Montecito where Prince Harry and Meghan live. In 2023, she revealed that she had bought and sold 'over 50 houses' including one property in Malibu which was previously owned by Brad Pitt. Earlier this year, it was reported that she had put two homes in Montecito on the market which are thought to be among her last remaining properties in California.
