One person dead after car flips on side, catches fire in multi-vehicle collision on Gardiner

A multi-vehicle collision resulted in one vehicle landing on it's side and catching fire on the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto. (Cassidy Powell / Chopper 24) A person has died after a car flipped on its side and caught on fire following a multi-vehicle collision on the Gardiner Expressway Tuesday evening. Toronto police say the crash happened at around 5:40 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the Gardiner near Yonge and Lower Jarvis streets. Paramedics tell CP24 that one person was pronounced dead on the scene, and five others were sent to the hospital with serious, non life-threatening injuries. All patients are adults. In a post on social media, police said one vehicle flipped over and caught fire, but the cause of the crash is still unknown. Video shared with CTV News Toronto shows at least five vehicles involved in the collision. Several people can be seen getting out of the vehicles and attempting to help others out. Chopper 24 captured several charred vehicles up against the shoulder after the fire had been put out. All westbound lanes are stopped and only one eastbound lane remains open. The southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway are also closed at the Richmond Street exit.

(Jacob Estrin/CTV News Toronto) Two people are in hospital in life-threatening condition following what police area calling a 'serious,' multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Mississauga early Sunday morning. The crash happened on the westbound express lanes near Dixie Road. Police say emergency responders were called to that area just before 2 a.m. OPP officers were already performing CPR on one person when fire crews arrived. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, of the OPP, later told CP24 that the patients were taken to a trauma centre with critical injuries and that they remain in hospital. No further update on their condition is available at this time. 'We appreciated your patience and understanding during the investigation and clean-up efforts,' The OPP said in a post on X.

Peel police were called for a collision at the intersection of Highway 50 and Coleraine Drive at 4:15 p.m. Const. Tyler Bell, Peel police's media relations officer, told CP24 that as officers were responding, York Regional Police notified them of an alleged impaired driver operating a white commercial van that exited Highway 27 onto Major Mackenzie Drive and headed west. When officers arrived, Bell said they found the white commercial van had collided with several vehicles at the intersection. He noted that the driver did not suffer significant injuries. 'We can't comment yet on some of the potential charges to come out of this,' he said. When asked if speed was a factor in the crash, Bell said, 'Almost undoubtedly.' 'Was it excessive speed or moderate speed? We don't quite know yet,' he added. 'Major Collision Bureau's gonna be on scene and mapping out the collision site, and part of their investigation is going to be a download of that vehicle to see exactly how fast it was travelling.' Bell said the reports received by the York Regional Police indicated that erratic driving was observed.
