Lunar New Year celebration highlights community's diversity
The audience at Saturday's Lunar New Year celebration at Frederick Community College seemed to appreciate the various Asian dances and musical performances. One child in particular was especially enthused. After a performance of the martial art of tai chi, a voice in the darkened auditorium at the college's JBK Theater cried out, 'That was amazing.' The celebration ushered in the Year of the Snake, one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. The snake is associated with wisdom, charm, elegance, and transformation, and people born under its sign are believed to be intelligent, insightful, and enigmatic, with keen intuition, according to notes in the event's program. The Lunar New Year is celebrated by about two billion people around the world, in countries including China, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam, said Elizabeth Chung, executive director of the Asian American Center of Frederick. It's especially important in agriculturally based societies. Events like Saturday's help show Asian culture to the community, she said. Chung said it's important to show the various cultures that make up the United States' society, she said, to illustrate the different heritages that make up one country. Bing Xiu, with the Washington Guzheng Society, said her group tries to choose pieces that help illustrate and teach elements of the 3,000 years of Chinese history when students are learning to play the ancient plucking instrument. She tries to teach students the stories behind the pieces they're playing, she said. The event included a variety of dance and musical performances, as well as displays of the martial arts of tai chi and wushu. The show illustrated the level of cultural diversity in Frederick County, Elaheh Eghbal said. 'It's really neat to see how the community comes out and celebrates,' she said. Eghbal said she was attending Saturday's event as a spectator, but is working with the Asian American Center of Frederick on a celebration of the Persian new year on March 9. Kathy Fay of Frederick said she was glad to see how many people still know the Asian arts and perform them, especially the children. 'They're very proud of their heritage, and it shows through,' she said.

Several festive events were organized across China, North Korea South Korea, and Sri Lanka including dragon dances, prayers, and family gatherings. It is a public holiday for several nations, so they witnessed heavy and crowded airports and roads. For example, nine billion trips are expected to be made in China. The Year of the Snake, in the Chinese zodiac, symbolizes wisdom, intuition, and transformation. In Chinese culture, the Snake represents a year of steady progress and careful planning, encouraging people to focus on self-reflection and deliberate action rather than impulsive decisions.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — From narrow side streets to packed malls, the traditional music and dance of dragon puppet performances have filled Indonesia's bustling capital of Jakarta to usher in the Lunar New Year. Asian communities across the world will begin ringing in the Lunar New Year on Jan. 29, with 2025 designated as the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac. Fireworks, parades and other Lunar New Year rituals are centered around removing bad luck and welcoming prosperity. In Indonesia, where millions of people have Chinese ancestry, crowds gathered to watch as drummers interspersed around puppet performers display the traditional dragon and lion puppets, which stretched up to 65 feet (20 meters) long in interconnected segments held by about a dozen people walking beneath. For weeks before the Lunar New Year festivities, the performance troupe — which can number anywhere from 50 to 100 people depending on how in-demand shows are — practice in the abandoned back area of a small storefront selling coffee and snacks. Women and children from around the area stop by to sit and watch. During slower weeks puppet heads sit unused on a storage shelf. On Sunday, days before the start of the Lunar New Year, the troupe loaded puppets and performers into the back of a small truck and headed to a shopping mall for a performance. Those who couldn't fit into the truck followed on motorbikes. In the mall, hundreds of visitors gathered to listen to the drums and watch the dance of the performance troupe. Rounds of applause greeted the dance, while some in the audience placed 'angpau' — an envelope containing money usually given during holidays or for special occasions — into the puppet's mouth.
