OpenAI CFO sees firm selling AI infrastructure service in future

(Bloomberg) — OpenAI ( is considering eventually helping other businesses tap into the data centers and physical infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence, potentially creating a new revenue line that could offset some of the ChatGPT maker's immense costs. The service would be loosely inspired by the success Inc. found renting out its spare cloud computing capacity to companies, OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said in an interview Wednesday. OpenAI is not 'actively looking' at such an effort today because it's focused on securing computing capacity for its own operations, she said. But 'I do think about it as a business down the line, for sure,' Friar said. In recent years, OpenAI has gained expertise on how to design and set up data centers to optimize workloads for AI. The company now sees an opportunity to capitalize on that know-how. It also wants to become more directly involved in the process rather than rely solely on third-party vendors. 'If all we do is buy from others, all we're doing is giving them our IP because they're learning how to build AI infrastructure,' Friar said. OpenAI has raised tens of billions of dollars to pay for advanced chips and data centers to build and operate cutting-edge AI services. The company is also working with SoftBank Group Corp. and Oracle Corp. on an ambitious infrastructure venture called Stargate, with plans to build massive data centers in the US and abroad. Even that may be a drop in the bucket. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman told reporters this month that people 'should expect OpenAI to spend trillions of dollars' on data center construction in the 'not very distant future.' Altman said OpenAI is working to 'design a very interesting new kind of financial instrument' to help support that effort, without providing details. Historically, OpenAI has leaned on other partners, including backer Microsoft Corp. and Oracle, to help finance the cost of building out data centers. Now, the company is also seeing banks and private equity firms 'come to the table' with debt financing to support its infrastructure initiatives, Friar said. 'That's the next path we're going down,' Friar said. From there, she added, OpenAI is 'trying to be thoughtful' about whether there are 'other interesting, novel ways we could do that beyond debt.' OpenAI remains an unprofitable business, which limits its ability to finance data center projects without outside capital. However, the company has seen revenue grow at a fast clip on the strength of consumer and business demand for ChatGPT. OpenAI generated $1 billion in revenue in July, marking its first month hitting that milestone, Friar said. The company is also in early talks about a potential sale of stock for current and former employees at a valuation of about $500 billion, Bloomberg News has reported. Its previous valuation stood at $300 billion in a $40 billion financing round led by SoftBank. Of that $40 billion, OpenAI was responsible for lining up $10 billion through a syndicate of investors. Friar said there was so much investor demand that OpenAI ended up raising $11 billion, bringing the total funding amount for the current round to $41 billion. ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

A portable rowing machine under $200? Practically unheard of — until now

New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. A glorified piece of steel for $800? $900? Sometimes, $1000? If you've been contemplating which workout machine to invest in, you've probably noticed the pricetag on most rowing machines can climb close to four figures. It's certainly one of the more expensive pieces of workout equipment on Amazon, and for a few good reasons. Rowing machines are a wonderful addition to any fitness routine, whether you're a total novice or a seasoned pro. The smooth, low-impact gliding motion mimics the feeling of being on the water, making workouts both effective and surprisingly meditative for many users. It's all these reasons and more that make the $189 YOSUDA Magnetic rowing machine such a rare find ahead of Labor Day weekend. Advertisement This sleek, sturdy, and yes — portable rowing machine — provides enough resistance for a variety of workout levels. Some reviewers mention they've seen 'significant improvements in fitness levels and muscle tone' after consistent use. Others have noted that it's very quiet, and the minimal sound that it does produce is actually 'relaxing and enjoyable.' All this for under $200? It almost sounds too good to be true — but for a limited time, it's very real. With YOSUDA, rowing might just become your new favorite workout ritual. Amazon Take your mental break (and workout) right from your living room. The YOSUDA combines a 12-lb flywheel with whisper-quiet magnetic resistance and the natural rush of water, pulling you into a rhythm that can burn calories and stress simultaneously. The sleek commercial quality and a 5mm-thick steel frame ensure long-lasting durability, so you can enjoy years of use. Transport wheels allow you to tow it just about anywhere, even against the wall, for easy storage. Gemini is finally replacing Google Assistant in Google Home — what you need to know

While Google spent the day announcing the new Pixel 10 lineup, you may have missed an under-the-radar update coming to Google Home that could change how you use your smart home. Starting in October, Google's AI assistant Gemini is slated to replace Google Assistant on the company's smart home devices like the Google Nest Hub. In a blog post that went up today (August 20), Google announced that the Gemini update will be available for both free and paid versions of Google Home, in a move that seems similar to how Amazon is positioning Alexa+. Google demoed Gemini for Google Home during CES 2025 with the best look we got at the update coming with Gemini on Google TV. At the time, Google promised that the AI model would enable more natural language conversations with your smart devices. Speaking conversationally with Gemini should still give you the results you expect, whether it's getting live sports scores or adjusting your Nest Thermostat. Beyond prompting, Gemini should integrate inputs from other Nest devices, like a video doorbell, to answer more complex questions and prompts about your home. You could also use Gemini to coordinate things — for example, telling your Nest device to "add the ingredients to make an authentic Italian lasagna to my shopping list." Additionally, Gemini Live will be part of the update, which should make for even more personalized conversations. "You can also interrupt responses to refine or redirect the discussion, so you get the specific information you're looking for quickly," Google said in the post. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Gemini in Google Home launches in early access in October. It's not clear how Gemini will roll out, but Google says it will "share more details soon." For example, we don't know how much it will cost, and what features will be locked away behind a paywall. Currently, Nest Aware subscribers pay $10 a month and are expected to be on the early access list. Potentially, the update could coincide with the release of new Google Home devices. The last Nest Hub launched in 2021, and the most recent Pixel tablet came out in 2023. We're still waiting on the Pixel Tablet 2.
