Man takes a cigarette break, then hangs on for dear life as Austrian train speeds off

VIENNA, Aug 11 — A man has survived clinging to the outside of an Austrian high-speed train, Austria's state railway said Sunday, reportedly after it left whilst he was having a cigarette break. The man late Saturday grabbed onto the outside of the train at St Poelten, west of Vienna, railways spokesman Herbert Hofer told AFP, and was later taken onboard after the train performed an emergency stop. 'It is irresponsible, this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying,' he said. 'And you're not just putting yourself in danger, if you end up under the train there's rescuers, there's police, fire service that come,' he added. The railjet train was on its way from Zurich in Switzerland to the Austrian capital and left Sankt Poelten on time but arrived in Vienna with a seven minute delay, Hofer said. Citing a passenger onboard, Austrian tabloid Heute said the man jumped into the space between two carriages after the train began to set off from a planned stop in Sankt Poelten. The man had taken advantage of being at a station to smoke a cigarette on the platform, Heute said. The man soon began to bang on windows to attract attention, Heute said, resulting in the train's conductor activating the emergency brake before train crew took the man aboard. 'The conductor really had a very big go at him,' the passenger told Heute. The man is a 24-year-old Algerian and was led away by police after the train arrived in Vienna's Meidling station, Heute reported. Hofer said he could not comment on the man's background ahead of further investigations. In January, a 40-year-old Hungarian man survived clinging to a German high-speed train for 20 miles, likewise after it set off before he had finished his cigarette. — AFP

Man, 24, SURVIVES after clinging onto high-speed train 'when it started leaving as he popped out for a cigarette'

A man has survived clinging to the outside of a high-speed train in Austria after 'it started leaving as he popped out for a cigarette'. The 24-year-old grabbed onto the outside of the train at St Pölten, west of Vienna, on Saturday, Herbert Hofer, a spokesperson for Austria's state railway, has said. Departing from Zurich, Switzerland, the railjet train was bound for the Austrian capital when the shocking incident occurred. The Algerian national had initially disembarked the train to take advantage of a planned stop in St Pölten to have a cigarette break, a passenger onboard the train told Austrian tabloid Heute. He then is said to have made a quick-thinking decision to jump into the space between two carriages after the train began to set off, desperately clinging on as it moved at high speed. Becoming panicked, the man banged on the train's windows to attract the attention of his fellow passengers. Eventually, the train's conductor activated the emergency brake before train crew were able to take the man onboard. Then, having successfully made it onto the train, the conductor is said to have had 'a massive go' at the passenger. It is unknown whether the passenger sustained any injuries from his dare-devil activity. After the train arrived in Vienna's Meidling station, the man was led away by police. Despite the chaos onboard, the service experienced a mere seven minute delay. Describing the actions of the traveller as 'irresponsible', Mr Hofer said: 'This kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying. 'And you're not just putting yourself in danger, if you end up under the train there's rescuers, there's police, fire service that come.' Mr Hofer said he could not comment on the man's background ahead of further investigations. In January, a 40-year-old Hungarian man survived clinging to a German high-speed train for 20 miles, likewise after it set off before he had finished his cigarette. The passenger had boarded the ICE train in Munich without a valid ticket and was hoping to take a smoking break in the station at Ingolstadt. However, after lingering too long, the train doors closed and he proceeded to cling onto cables held between two carriages as the train sp[ed towards Nuremberg at up to 175mph. He later told police, after the train was halted, that he had left his luggage on the train and had not wanted to be parted from hit. The man, who bore no injuries from the incident, was subsequently handed over to federal police.
