Man clings to Austrian high-speed train and survives
The man late Saturday grabbed onto the outside of the train at St Poelten, west of Vienna, railways spokesman Herbert Hofer told AFP, and was later taken onboard after the train performed an emergency stop.
"It is irresponsible, this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying," he said.
"And you're not just putting yourself in danger, if you end up under the train there's rescuers, there's police, fire service that come," he added.
The railjet train was on its way from Zurich in Switzerland to the Austrian capital and left Sankt Poelten on time but arrived in Vienna with a seven-minute delay, Hofer said.
Citing a passenger onboard, Austrian tabloid Heute said the man jumped into the space between two carriages after the train began to set off from a planned stop in Sankt Poelten.
The man had taken advantage of being at a station to smoke a cigarette on the platform, Heute said.
The man soon began to bang on windows to attract attention, Heute said, resulting in the train's conductor activating the emergency brake before train crew took the man aboard.
"The conductor really had a very big go at him," the passenger told Heute.
The man is a 24-year-old Algerian and was led away by police after the train arrived in Vienna's Meidling station, Heute reported.
Hofer said he could not comment on the man's background ahead of further investigations.
In January, a 40-year-old Hungarian man survived clinging to a German high-speed train for 20 miles, likewise after it set off before he had finished his cigarette.

Police appeal as man in 20s dies after fatal collision at reservoir
Police are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 20s died following a collision at a Staffordshire reservoir. Officers and paramedics had been sent to Blithfield Reservoir near Abbots Bromley to reports of a collision between a Fiat car and a pedestrian. "Sadly the pedestrian, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His family are being supported by specially trained officers at this time. The driver of the Fiat remained at the scene and is assisting us with our enquiries." Police are keen to hear from anyone travelling along the reservoir between 9.15pm and 9.35pm. The ambulance service say it received reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian at the junction of Watery Lane and the B5013 causeway. An ambulance, HART paramedics and a paramedic officer were sent to the beauty spot. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: 'An off-duty doctor was at the scene with the pedestrian, a man, when ambulance staff arrived. Sadly, nothing could be done to save him and the man was confirmed deceased a short time later by ambulance staff. 'The driver of the car sustained minor injuries and was discharged on scene.' Rail bosses given ‘criminal offence' warning over fare dodger prosecutions
Train company bosses have been warned by the Government they could be breaking the law if they allow unqualified staff to prosecute alleged fare dodgers. A Department for Transport memo sent to operators states it is a 'criminal offence' to let non-lawyers act as prosecutors in court cases with passengers accused of not buying the correct ticket. The use of these lay prosecutors in those circumstances is not legal, the advice warns. There have been a series of high-profile cases in which passengers faced prosecution over small amounts of money. In one example, a passenger was threatened with court action for accidentally selecting a 16-25 railcard ticket when they held a 26-30 railcard, which provides the same discount. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has written to train operators stating that 'any enforcement must be proportionate and not punish those making genuine mistakes'. She added: 'It is your responsibility to ensure that you are adequately protecting revenue in a cost effective but lawful way.' The Cabinet minister said she accepted the recommendations of regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), which included creating consistency in how passengers are treated when ticket issues arise, and ensuring passengers have clearer information about tickets. Industry body the Rail Delivery Group has estimated that fare dodging creates £350 million to £400 million in lost revenue each year. A Government source said: 'Fare evasion costs the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds a year and dents confidence in our railway, so we're dead serious about tackling it. 'But enforcement must be proportionate. We can't have operators going after an older person faced with an incomprehensible system, or a student who has made an honest mistake. 'We're asking train companies to make sure they are prosecuting fare dodgers properly the first time. 'We'll set out our full response to the ORR report in due course, and Great British Railways will simplify fares and ticketing – restoring a railway the public can be proud of again.' The Government is bringing operators into public ownership as contracts expire. GBR is an upcoming public sector body that will oversee Britain's rail infrastructure and train operation.

2 dead after fire in Jalan Bukit Merah flat, about 60 evacuated
SINGAPORE – Two people in their 30s have died after a fire broke out in a Bukit Merah flat on Aug 13. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in an evening Facebook post that it responded to the fire at Block 106 in Jalan Bukit Merah at about 4pm. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the living room and bedroom of a unit on the fourth floor were in flames, with SCDF personnel making use of a water jet to extinguish the blaze. In the midst of putting out the blaze, firefighters found two people in the kitchen. Both were unconscious and taken to Singapore General Hospital, where they subsequently died. In response to queries, the police said the deceased were a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, and they do not suspect foul play based on preliminary investigations. Police investigations are ongoing. Another two people from neighbouring units were also taken to the same hospital – one felt unwell while the other suffered from smoke inhalation. In total, about 60 people from the affected block were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The cause of the fire is under investigation. When ST arrived at the scene at about 7.30pm, two fire engines and three police cars were seen parked near the block, with a police cordon set up. Several residents could also be seen standing around the carpark, with some speaking to SCDF officers. A resident who lives on the fifth floor and wanted to be known only as Ah Hua, said he smelled smoke emitting from the burning unit at about 4pm. He said he heard an explosion and his neighbours knocked on his door, asking him to evacuate. Another resident, 55-year-old Bernard Lee, whose flat is directly above the unit that caught fire, said he was at work when his sister told him what had happened. He said he does not know the occupants of the affected unit. This incident marks eight fire-related deaths so far in 2025 – an increase from five in 2024 and three in 2023, according to SCDF statistics. The most recent fire-related deaths occurred in July when a 56-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman were pronounced dead by an SCDF paramedic.
