Josh O'Connor Was a Snazzy Standout at the Cannes Film Festival

At the annual Cannes Film Festival, traditional evening attire and classic tuxedo dressing always prevails—so much so that the 2025 festival dress code was stricter than ever. (This year, that meant no naked dressing or over-the-top voluminous gowns.) Even so, that didn't mean that top Hollywood stars didn't have fun with their outfits. Specifically, the men of Cannes embraced whimsical dressing—be it Alexander Skarsgard in thigh-high boots, or Jeremy Strong with his rainbow assortment of pastels. The Mastermind star Josh O'Connor, meanwhile, was another best dressed celebrity: He totally stood out with his individualistic approach to suiting up. Working with stylist Harry Lambert (who was also behind Skarsgard's winning Cannes looks), O'Connor took a more eccentric approach to tailoring—with much of his festival wardrobe being custom Prada. 'Me and Josh looked through the last Prada show and exchanged some images of runway looks that we loved, and we started building out a moodboard with references and ideas,' says Lambert. 'There was quite a bit of mix-and-matching of pieces in the last show, which we loved. We wanted to do mix-and-matched tailoring for Cannes.' It started when the star first touched down in the south of France: O'Connor landed in a green and cream western-style Prada shirt, paired with a cool oversized bowling bag. 'We looked at a knitwear from the runway, and there was this cream and green jumper with western detailing. We asked Prada to turn it into a shirt for us,' says Lambert.

Margaret Qualley's Chanel Ballet Flats Were the Underrated Star of Cannes

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Who said the ballet flat hype was dying down? When you're headed to a major event—like the Cannes Film Festival, for example—the expectation is that heels are the norm. Of course, rules are meant to be broken. Flats have taken over the scene as one of the standout, versatile pieces of footwear everyone should have in their closet, and Margaret Qualley just made a solid case for wearing them to any and all events. Attending the premiere of Honey Don't, the actor stepped onto the red carpet in flat Chanel shoes in a cream and black cap-toe hue. Paired with a long, flowy gown—also by Chanel—with a high slit and off-the-shoulder neckline, Qualley looked nothing short of ethereal. Her dress featured a small train that pooled around her as she walked, as well as a darling camelia—the luxury house's signature floral—and a bow detail nestled just at the heart of her neckline. She wore her hair in a romantic bun, with two loose strands left out in front to frame her face. Although she kept her accessories minimal, her updo let her delicate two-tone drop earrings shine. For Qualley, diamonds really have been her best friend on the carpet lately. While attending the Academy Awards earlier this year, her black backless gown was frosted to perfection with a few glamorous additions. In addition to the Motif Russe necklace from Chanel's High Jewelry collection, she also donned an Étoile Filante bracelet, Impression Florale earrings, and both Pluie de Comètes and Ruban rings—all made of 18-karat white gold and glittering with precious diamonds. All the Details Behind Alexander Skarsgård's BDSM-Inspired Cannes Looks

This year's Cannes Film Festival organizers may have banned the infamous naked dress, but they didn't say anything about BDSM-themed dressing—for men, at least. Ironically, while the dress code has devoted its attention to restricting women's attire on the red carpet, Alexander Skarsgård's kinky thigh-high boots and mismatched sequin suit have bent the rules of propriety in a way that feels humorous, yet irreverent. The Swedish actor is currently at the festival promoting his upcoming movie, Pillion, where he plays Ray, the handsome leader of a queer biker club who takes on Colin (played by Harry Melling) as his sexual submissive. The film is already a festival favorite, receiving a warm seven-minute standing ovation. So why not lean into the character and promote it even more? If anything, themed dressing and red carpet Easter eggs have become the norm thanks to stylist-celeb power duos like Zendaya and Law Roach. From dressing Zendaya in archival cyborg-like Givenchy by Alexander McQueen for the Dune: Part 2 press tour to a custom tennis-printed Loewe dress for a Challengers premiere, every photo call has become an opportunity for subliminal messaging. Others have pushed the boundaries even further, going full method, like Timothée Chalamet who attended the New York premiere of A Complete Unknown dressed in a perfect recreation of a Bob Dylan outfit from 2003, blonde swooping hair and all. Skarsgård isn't a stranger to pushing the style envelope or channeling his roles through gimmicky fashion either. When promoting his film Infinity Pool, the actor wore a leather leash around his neck to walk the carpet. Albeit, it was a jarring sight for the context, but it directly referenced a scene from the movie and felt appropriately authentic to the celebrity's eccentric demeanor. At the Cannes photo call for Pillion's screening, the actor sported Loewe leather trousers paired with a thrifted BDSM graphic T-shirt depicting a faceless leather boot stepping on a man's open mouth—he is playing Colin's 'dom' after all. Later, on the red carpet, Skårsgard donned a full look from Saint Laurent's spring 2025 menswear collection, including the uniquely sensual over-the-knee leather boots (which have also been seen on Pedro Pascal). The sartorial madness didn't stop there. For the premiere of Eagles of the Republic, the actor stepped out in what could only be described as a Frankenstein-like suit. All styled by Harry Lambert, Skarsgård wore a gray striped Magliano jacket, oversized pink bow tie, and contrasting cobalt sequin trousers from Bianca Saunders. Daring? Yes. More so than a leather leash at a movie premiere? Not quite. Sometimes an ensemble simply comes along that is so perfectly sacrilegious that you can't help but smile and accept the look as nothing less than a balanced work of art. Skarsgård might not directly be disobeying the Cannes dress code—he's adhered to wearing evening dress or a bow tie (as per the official guidelines) for the red carpet—but he's definitely toeing the line, not unlike his character Ray, and perhaps is setting the standard for others to do so too. Cannes goes kinky! 'Fetish fashion' takes over red carpet as stars don their finest leather looks amid film festival's crackdown on 'naked' outfits

Movie stars have brought A-list fashion to the red carpet on the Cote d'Azur during this year's Cannes Film Festival - but as the organisers have implemented a dress code crackdown, an unexpected trend has emerged. In a first for the festival, a wave of celebrities appeared at premieres and photocalls donning their finest leather garments - whether in statement boots, biker jackets or full frocks. From Alexander Skarsgard's eyebrow-raising thigh-high 'fetish boots' to Zoe Saldana pairing her black gown with a biker jacket and Nicole Kidman in a corseted leather top, the celebs have truly embraced the divisive material on the traditionally formal Cannes red carpet. Skarsgård has taken a leaf out of Margot Robbie 's style book by 'method dressing' throughout the festival, wearing outfits that match the theme of his film Pillion, which he has been promoting. The 48-year-old plays Ray, a biker gang leader, in the film, which made its debut to rave reviews at the festival, and he's been dressing in leather as an homage to his character. During a screening for the film on Sunday, Skarsgård smiled alongside his costars wearing a pair of leather Loewe trousers and matching motorcycle boots, a white vintage t-shirt and aviator sunglasses. He posed up a storm, showing off his leather ensemble much to the delight of many of his fans. 'I'm never getting over Alexander Skarsgard in leather pants, GOOD LORD,' one woman tweeted. At the premiere of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, Zoe Saldaña gave classic glamour an edgy twist by wearing an leather coat over the top of her sleek black Saint Laurent gown 'Alexander Skarsgård wearing leather pants for the premiere of his new queer film…I'm obsessed with this man, you don't understand,' another remarked. 'The one thing Alexander Skarsgård is going to do is play up the theme of his film on the red carpet,' someone added. Later that evening at the film The Phoenician Scheme's red carpet premiere, the actor upped the ante and wowed fans by pairing his sleek formal suit with a pair of Saint Laurent 'fetish' boots that went well up past his knees. The thigh-high boots with a loose fit and buckle detailing were a stark contrast to the dapper double-breasted tuxedo with silk lapels he styled them with. 'Alexander Skarsgård in these kinky Saint Laurent boots,' one fan commented online, and another wrote: 'Love a man in a thigh high.' And Skarsgård isn't the only one to jump aboard the 'fetish dressing' trend. Nicole Kidman donned an edgy Balenciaga leather corseted jacket as she was presented the 2025 Women In Motion Award during the film festival on Sunday. The A-lister looked incredible as she embodied 'motocore' style in the corset-style leather jacket, which she teamed with low-rise jeans and a chunky belt. Later that evening, the actor upped the ante and wowed fans by pairing his sleek formal suit with a pair of Saint Laurent 'fetish' boots that went well up past his knees She clutched the jacket so it sat below her shoulders while posing for and waving to the flurry of photographers alongside her husband, Marco Perego. Gabbriette brought out her inner spy at the Mission Impossible premiere, opting for a head-to-toe leather look. The model was oozing Gothic glamour as she wore a structured, floor-length black leather gown and chunky silver jewellery by brand Chrome Hearts. This year's Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche went for a Matrix-like leather look at the Trophee Chopard Dinner on Saturday. The French actress looked chic in the skin-tight off-shoulder dress with a front zip and thigh-high split. She wore latex-like boots under the dress and paired the rebellious look with a pair of black sunglasses. Other celebrities took a more subtle approach to 'fetish dressing'. At Sunday's The Phoenician premiere, Julianne Moore stunned in a simple Bottega Veneta dress with a risqué feature. The black sheath frock included one single strap made from strings of leather tied into a knot ,with its tassels not looking dissimilar to a whip. Gabbriette brought out her inner spy at the Mission Impossible premiere oozing Gothic glamour as she wore a structured, floor-length black leather gown and chunky silver jewellery The 'kinky' fashion fad comes after Cannes updated its dress code to ban 'nude dressing' just days before the festival was due to begin. According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet. 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document. 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' The surprise new policy features in a recent festival-goers charter, released with a series of outlines regarding expected public behaviour. Guests are expected to converge on the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière for some of the highest profile film screenings across a packed seven-day schedule in Cannes. It's understood that the iconic venue now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets, and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured over headline-grabbing ensembles. Classic little black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant-suits, dressy tops and elegant sandals, 'with or without a heel', will also be permitted. While the decision to implement a more stringent policy will be a first, it is not known if French TV broadcasters, wary of airing nudity, played a role in its enforcement. Major red carpet events, including the Cannes Film Festival, are aired in France by France Télévisions. Recently attracting more models and influencers than actors and filmmakers, the annual ceremony has seen an increase in risque red carpet fashion statements.
