Cannes goes kinky! 'Fetish fashion' takes over red carpet as stars don their finest leather looks amid film festival's crackdown on 'naked' outfits
In a first for the festival, a wave of celebrities appeared at premieres and photocalls donning their finest leather garments - whether in statement boots, biker jackets or full frocks.
From Alexander Skarsgard's eyebrow-raising thigh-high 'fetish boots' to Zoe Saldana pairing her black gown with a biker jacket and Nicole Kidman in a corseted leather top, the celebs have truly embraced the divisive material on the traditionally formal Cannes red carpet.
Skarsgård has taken a leaf out of Margot Robbie 's style book by 'method dressing' throughout the festival, wearing outfits that match the theme of his film Pillion, which he has been promoting.
The 48-year-old plays Ray, a biker gang leader, in the film, which made its debut to rave reviews at the festival, and he's been dressing in leather as an homage to his character.
During a screening for the film on Sunday, Skarsgård smiled alongside his costars wearing a pair of leather Loewe trousers and matching motorcycle boots, a white vintage t-shirt and aviator sunglasses.
He posed up a storm, showing off his leather ensemble much to the delight of many of his fans.
'I'm never getting over Alexander Skarsgard in leather pants, GOOD LORD,' one woman tweeted.
At the premiere of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, Zoe Saldaña gave classic glamour an edgy twist by wearing an leather coat over the top of her sleek black Saint Laurent gown
'Alexander Skarsgård wearing leather pants for the premiere of his new queer film…I'm obsessed with this man, you don't understand,' another remarked.
'The one thing Alexander Skarsgård is going to do is play up the theme of his film on the red carpet,' someone added.
Later that evening at the film The Phoenician Scheme's red carpet premiere, the actor upped the ante and wowed fans by pairing his sleek formal suit with a pair of Saint Laurent 'fetish' boots that went well up past his knees.
The thigh-high boots with a loose fit and buckle detailing were a stark contrast to the dapper double-breasted tuxedo with silk lapels he styled them with.
'Alexander Skarsgård in these kinky Saint Laurent boots,' one fan commented online, and another wrote: 'Love a man in a thigh high.'
And Skarsgård isn't the only one to jump aboard the 'fetish dressing' trend.
Nicole Kidman donned an edgy Balenciaga leather corseted jacket as she was presented the 2025 Women In Motion Award during the film festival on Sunday.
The A-lister looked incredible as she embodied 'motocore' style in the corset-style leather jacket, which she teamed with low-rise jeans and a chunky belt.

She clutched the jacket so it sat below her shoulders while posing for and waving to the flurry of photographers alongside her husband, Marco Perego.
Gabbriette brought out her inner spy at the Mission Impossible premiere, opting for a head-to-toe leather look.
The model was oozing Gothic glamour as she wore a structured, floor-length black leather gown and chunky silver jewellery by brand Chrome Hearts.
This year's Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche went for a Matrix-like leather look at the Trophee Chopard Dinner on Saturday.
The French actress looked chic in the skin-tight off-shoulder dress with a front zip and thigh-high split.
She wore latex-like boots under the dress and paired the rebellious look with a pair of black sunglasses.
Other celebrities took a more subtle approach to 'fetish dressing'.
At Sunday's The Phoenician premiere, Julianne Moore stunned in a simple Bottega Veneta dress with a risqué feature.
The black sheath frock included one single strap made from strings of leather tied into a knot ,with its tassels not looking dissimilar to a whip.

The 'kinky' fashion fad comes after Cannes updated its dress code to ban 'nude dressing' just days before the festival was due to begin.
According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet.
'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document.
'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.'
The surprise new policy features in a recent festival-goers charter, released with a series of outlines regarding expected public behaviour.
Guests are expected to converge on the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière for some of the highest profile film screenings across a packed seven-day schedule in Cannes.
It's understood that the iconic venue now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets, and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured over headline-grabbing ensembles.
Classic little black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant-suits, dressy tops and elegant sandals, 'with or without a heel', will also be permitted.
While the decision to implement a more stringent policy will be a first, it is not known if French TV broadcasters, wary of airing nudity, played a role in its enforcement.
Major red carpet events, including the Cannes Film Festival, are aired in France by France Télévisions.
Recently attracting more models and influencers than actors and filmmakers, the annual ceremony has seen an increase in risque red carpet fashion statements.

How Princess Eugenie is following the Duchess of Sussex style playbook
Among a sea of celebrities, socialites and young royals in attendance at Royal Ascot last month, one in particular stood out as especially stylish. While the Princess of Wales was unable to attend for health reasons, her husband's cousin, Princess Eugenie, seemingly picked up her style baton, looking incredibly chic on two separate occasions. Arriving on the fourth day of the races, the 12th-in-line to the throne wore a coffee and cream coloured two-piece skirt and top, with her wide-brimmed white hat giving her an Audrey Hepburn-esque appeal. Then, on the fifth day, she chose a vivid orange midi dress by Whistles, featuring a fitted bodice and flared skirt, which she accessorised with her go-to Aquazzura Bow Tie heels and corresponding headpiece. And it's not the first time that Eugenie has looked more put together in recent weeks. In early May, she also looked notably chic at the Chelsea Flower Show, wearing a Rebecca Vallance floral dress, nude-coloured mules by trendy brand Staud and Sophie Lis's playful mushroom earrings. Then, at the Tate Modern 25th Anniversary Fundraising Gala, she chose a white Broderie Anglaise Self Portrait dress, while for a visit to a Salvation Army safehouse she wore a Veronica Beard denim midi dress with Peter Pan collar. For some royal style-watchers, Eugenie's new look seems to be borrowing heavily from the Duchess of Sussex's sartorial playbook, and not just because they share a love of the same designers (including Rebecca Vallance, Aquazzura and Sophie Lis in particular). 'It's European summer, a season where royals usually embrace florals, pastels and classic English countryside styling, but Princess Eugenie seems to be taking a different approach, one that feels unmistakably Californian,' says the anonymous poster behind Instagram's popular Royal Fashion Daily account. 'At public engagements, from Royal Ascot to more casual daytime visits, she's shifted towards a wardrobe of earthy, neutral tones – olive, taupe, cream and sand. The palette calls to mind Meghan's now-iconic '50 shades of beige,' a soft, minimalist style that became her signature from her Sussex days through to her life on the west coast.' And it's not just the designers or the colour palette that is reminiscent of Meghan, it's the unfussy silhouettes and seeming adoption of a 'quiet luxury' aesthetic. 'Eugenie's leaning into a quieter kind of elegance, one that prioritises ease and polish over ornament,' continues Royal Fashion Daily. 'It's a style that Meghan has long championed: clean lines, refined cuts and a sense of quiet confidence. In one recent appearance, Eugenie wore a sleeveless olive green dress with a belted waist – structured but relaxed, and entirely free of fuss. For another event, she chose a navy midi dress with subtle tailoring and no embellishment, paired simply with nude heels. It's a look built on clarity, not complexity.' While it's unclear whether or not she's worked with a stylist on her current wardrobe revamp, Eugenie has previously been known to work with stylists. In 2011, it was revealed that she and her elder sister Princess Beatrice had worked with stylist Charlie Anderson for a year on overhauling their look following the cruel trolling they received about their outfits at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The sisters went on to work with Mary Fellowes, who promised them she'd get them in the Vogue best dressed list. 'And I did,' she told the Telegraph in 2021. 'I'm very proud of them for that because I think they'd had quite a mixed style journey until then.' Then, in the 2020s, it was reported that Eugenie had worked with Irish stylist Sarah Price on her wedding trousseau, which included bespoke Peter Pilotto and Zac Posen dresses. If she's not working with a stylist, it could also just be via osmosis that she's been inspired by Meghan. After all, of all the members of the Royal Family, Eugenie is known for being the only one to still keep in close contact with the Sussexes, often visiting them in California. For Royal Fashion Daily, the inspiration is obvious. 'Whether it's a structured dress, a minimal co-ord or a bold pop of colour offset by soft accessories, Eugenie's fashion evolution is clear,' says the page. 'She's stepping away from traditional royal tropes and towards a new kind of modern, understated and confident style, one that is quietly influenced by the woman who helped rewrite the rules of royal style.' Whether or not anything that Meghan uploads on her ShopMy ends up in Eugenie's wardrobe remains to be seen… Five ways that Eugenie and Meghan are working from the same style playbook The stealth wealth colour palette Meghan is known for her love of greige-y neutrals, and at Royal Ascot, it appeared that Eugenie was embracing them too. Her beige top, last seen in 2015, worn over a white dress, was very Meghan-coded and stood out in the sea of pastels. The poppy red When she does use colour, Meghan chooses her shades wisely, and her rich poppy red Carolina Herrera dress is a case in point. She first wore it back in 2021, but had it altered before she wore it again last year. Eugenie took a leaf from that book, again, at Royal Ascot, in a much more affordable Whistles dress which looked elegant with a matching hat. The Sophie Lis jewellery Meghan first wore the jewellery designer's 'Love' pendant in 2020, and went on to wear it in 2022 at the Invictus Games and on screen in With Love, Meghan. Eugenie is also a loyal fan, having worn Lis's 'Fallen Star' hoops on several occasions, and more recently, the Sophie Lis 'Mushroom' earrings too. The emerald drape It's not just that they've worn the same colour here, it's that both have chosen styles which feature Grecian-inspired draping for an elevated take on eveningwear. The Aquazzura heels Meghan has long worn Aquazzura heels, distinctive for their cut-outs and bow detail at the heel. So it was easy to spot Eugenie wearing the same brand at Royal Ascot. Perhaps they've traded notes on the most comfortable heels to wear for long periods of time?

Poirot star Sir David Suchet reveals his personal heartache after beloved grandson was born with an incurable and 'extremely rare' genetic disease - and how the family have pulled together to get through
It's that time of year when millions of excited Brits are off for the school summer holidays but for many with severely handicapped children, travelling abroad is a incredibly difficult. One such family battling the difficulties of coping with a child suffering complex needs just happens to be the Suchet family, Robert and Lisa, son and daughter in law of award winning TV and film actor Sir David Suchet. In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail, Poirot star Sir David and his daughter-in-law, Lisa Suchet, 43, explain how the whole family has pulled together to get through. 'Thank God over the years we have had a close relationship with grandad, David to help us get through it all,' said Lisa. Sir David, 79, who by his own admission has had a 'lucky life' became a household name playing Agatha Christie's fastidious Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, for 25 years. But he was devastated when his eldest grandchild was born brain damaged and also has a brain tumour. 'It was a shock. Our darling grandson has Tuberous Sclerosis, a very rare incurable disease (in this case caused by a non inherited) gene mutation. He explained. 'He is now 11, but he is non-verbal. 'He can walk, with a very particular gait. But he is a beautiful child. 'I learned it was incurable, it was hard to take in, not many people have heard of it. So I'm now campaigning to raise awareness.' Sir David, who also has a daughter, Katherine - a physiotherapist - with wife Sheila Ferris, added: 'I have four lovely grandchildren. And we are a very close family. 'But the years have passed and I now rent a place down in Wiltshire so Sheila and I can be on hand.' Sir David says he probably inherited his caring paternal ways not from his own father, Jack Suchet, the eminent gynaecologist, who died in 2001, but through his maternal grandfather, James Jarche. A warm hearted, kindly man, Jarche was the celebrated Fleet Street photographer renowned for taking the first picture of Edward VIII and mistress Wallis Simpson. Jimmy, as he was known, always put his arm around Sir David and cuddled him when he was a little boy, recalls the actor, which is exactly what he now does with his own grandson. Lisa (pictured, with her son) and Robert Suchet busy preparing to take their two children to the Canary Islands for their summer holidays WHAT IS TUBEROUS SCLEROSIS? Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by the growth of non-cancerous tumors in various parts of the body, predominantly the brain, skin, kidneys, heart, eyes, and lungs. The condition is present from birth, though symptoms may not appear immediately. TSC can lead to a range of health problems depending on the location and size of the tumours. 'You can't cure or halt it what my grandson endures, you just have to get on with it,' he said. Meanwhile his son Robert Suchet and wife Lisa are busy preparing to take their two children to the Canary Islands for their summer holidays. 'Travelling with a child so disabled is zero fun, he has known to have a massive meltdown in the airport!' said Lisa with disarming honesty. Lisa met ex Marine, Robert, as part of her Wiltshire extended social circle, she was aware he had a famous father, but he certainly didn't make a 'big thing' out of it. They wed in Sienna, Italy After their son was born, Lisa freely admits in the early the marriage was under such strain she feared 'we would not last'. 'He didn't walk until he was two and a half. His speech is badly affected and his behaviour is like a toddler. He doesn't know how to chew and is still on pureed food. 'His behaviour is constantly challenging , he screams and shouts, and persistently throws things. He gets through three outfits a day due to his problems eating food and toilet habits. 'But in between all this he is so sweet, and loving.' She added: 'Not long after he was born I lost my own father, Ken, suddenly he was only 73, What with the new baby. 'I was grief stricken. Thank God David stepped in a fatherly role, to provide a shoulder to lean on. 'When we first told David the diagnosis, he was just off to Canada to do a theatre, we were all overwhelmed with grief. You grow this child and you grieve for what you thought his life would become, and the life he will never have.' Sir David, a devout Christian, prayed for his grandson and continues to fight for his future. Earlier this year he helped man the Room to Breathe garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show run by Tuberous Sclerosis Association, which won a gold medal. 'Both our families have been marvellous,' said Lisa. 'And the thing is, my father in law might be famous but at the end of the day he doesn't act grand, he constantly steps in to be a tower of support, he is a very spiritual man.'
