'Looting In Name Of GST': Notices To Karnataka Vendors Trigger Political Slugfest

Last Updated: Small and micro traders across Karnataka had objected to receiving GST notices linked to their UPI transactions. The BJP and JDS slammed the Congress government over the move. A political slugfest has erupted over GST notices issued to small traders and vendors on their UPI transactions in Karnataka, with the Opposition BJP and JDS accusing the Congress government of trying to pass on the blame to the Centre. A section of small and micro traders across the state had objected to receiving GST notices linked to their UPI transactions, and traders' associations asked the businesses to boycott UPI transactions. They had also called for a statewide strike on July 25. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah later announced that the government won't recover tax from them. Siddaramaiah said he held a meeting with small traders and discussed the notices. 'I called a meeting with small traders and others to discuss the issue of notices being issued to small traders, as notices were being issued to those with a turnover of more than Rs 40 lakh," he said. 'Around 9000 notices were issued. The central government has decided to impose a one per cent tax on these individuals… There was confusion among small traders about this…Traders dealing in exempt goods shall not be registered compulsarily…Old tax arrears would not be pursued…The delegation has agreed to withdraw the agitation called on July 25," the Chief Minister added. 'All these days, #TaxCM @siddaramaiah loudly claimed that the state government was not responsible for imposing taxes on small traders — blaming the central government instead, and saying taxation wasn't the state's domain. But now, he has announced that taxes will not be collected from small traders. This clearly proves that the @INCKarnataka government was the one imposing heavy taxes — running a loot in the name of GST, with traders receiving tax notices worth lakhs," BJP Karnataka tweeted. JDS, a BJP ally, also slammed the Congress government over the issue, however, welcomed the government's step to withdraw the notices. '@Siddaramaiah, who had been dismissing claims and saying that the state government had not issued notices to small traders, has finally admitted the truth. The Congress government, which had started collecting what people are calling the #GuaranteeSiddaramaiahTax in the name of GST to fill the empty treasury, has been forced to wake up after facing backlash from small traders and the public. In connection with the GST notices sent to small traders by the Commercial Taxes Department, the Chief Minister held a meeting to avoid further embarrassment," JDS tweeted. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 20:56 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Karnataka CM slams BJP's 'Urdu Over Kannada' claim as malicious lie meant to spread communal hatred

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 28 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has strongly refuted BJP allegations that the state government prioritised Urdu over Kannada in funding allocations, terming the claims 'malicious lies' aimed at inciting communal hatred. In a series of tweets, Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of Karnataka of deliberately spreading falsehoods that undermine communal harmony. 'BJP4Karnataka is spreading a malicious lie that our Govt gave more funds to Urdu while neglecting Kannada. This is not just false -- it's a deliberate attempt to incite communal hatred. A national party behaving like internet trolls is deeply shameful,' he wrote on X. The Chief Minister presented detailed figures to counter the BJP's assertions. According to Siddaramaiah, the state government allocated Rs34,438 crore to Primary and Secondary Education and an additional Rs 4,150 crore to Social Welfare and other departments during 20205-26, for a total of Rs 38,688 crore--all meant for Kannada-medium education. Furthermore, Rs 999.3 crore has been set aside for government school infrastructure, benefiting Kannada-based education. The CM Siddaramaiah further said, ' Kannada is not just a language. It is our identity, pride, and mother tongue--and our Government will never tolerate insults to Kannada or Karnataka.' He dismissed the BJP Karnataka's claim that Kannada received only Rs 32 crore as a 'deliberate political distortion' intended to mislead and provoke the public. Chief Minister condemned the BJP for equating language with religion, calling it 'an insult to that language.' The Congress leader highlighted the Karnataka government's efforts to support all native tongues. 'Equating any language with a particular religion is an insult to that language. Our Govt honours all native tongues of Karnataka -- Tulu, Kodava, Konkani, Arebhashe, Byari -- with dedicated academies and an annual grant of Rs 80 lakh each, along with extra funds for cultural programs,' the post added on X. Regarding Kannada, Siddaramaiah outlined the role of the Kannada and Culture Department, which oversees 14 academies, 3 authorities, and 24 literary trusts, all focused on promoting Kannada language and culture, benefiting Kannadigas and the state. Siddaramaiah also took a direct swipe at the BJP's national leadership, suggesting that the misinformation might be part of a 'fake news toolkit' allegedly handed down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He urged the PM to take action by directing the Press Information Bureau's Fact Check unit to expose the misinformation and called on the Union Home Ministry to act against BJP Karnataka's social media handles, which he referred to as 'repeat offenders.' He cautioned that such attempts to mislead the public were not confined to Karnataka alone but posed a 'national threat to peace and constitutional order.' (ANI)

‘War is last resort': Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah clarifies remarks amid India, Pakistan tension over Pahalagam attack

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued a clarification on his remarks on war. On Saturday, Siddaramaiah reportedly said he was not in favour of "war" with Pakistan. As the statement drew criticism, the Karnataka Chief Minister clarified that he "didn't say that "there should be no war." "...I said that it [war] is inevitable, but it must be done with Pakistan, but I did not say that there should be no war," Siddaramaiah was quoted by news agency ANI as saying. He also questioned the central government on the security in Srinagar where the attack on April 22 left 26 civilians dead. "It is the responsibility of the central government to provide security, 26 people died in the incident... I said there should not be a war immediately...," Siddaramaiah said. Siddaramaiah also posted on X, saying, "I have observed the debates and discussions, both for and against, surrounding the statement I made about war." He wrote, "War should always be a nation's last resort — never the first, nor the only option. Only when every other means to defeat the enemy has failed, should a country be compelled to go to war." In the post, the Karnataka CM also alleged "grave lapses in our intelligence and security apparatus." "The horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, orchestrated by Pakistan-backed militants, has made it painfully clear — both to the people of our nation and to the central government — that there were grave lapses in our intelligence and security apparatus," he said. Pakistan media recently played up Siddaramaiah's "no need for war" comments over the Pahalgam terror attack. Karnataka unit of the BJP shared one such clip played on a Pakistan TV channel and said on X, "Pakistan media hails "Halal CM" @siddaramaiah for his love towards them." Siddaramaiah had on Saturday said there is no need for a war with Pakistan, but the central government should strengthen the security system. "There is no need for war, stringent measures should be taken. The security system needs to be tightened. We are not in favour of war. There should be peace, people should have security, and the central government should take security measures...," Siddaramaiah was quoted by news agency PTI as saying on Saturday. Later on Sunday, addressing an event launching various developmental works in Bengaluru Rural district, the CM said his statement was distorted, and if it is inevitable, India will have to wage war against Pakistan. When asked about Pakistan media playing up his statement, he said, "I did not say no to a war with Pakistan. What I said is that war is not a solution. Security should have been provided there, as many tourists go to Kashmir. Providing security is whose responsibility? It is the central government's responsibility. I said there was a failure." "26 people were killed (in Pahalgam), 40 soldiers were killed (in Pulwama attack). So there is a failure of intelligence from the Government of India. I have said that the Government of India did not provide proper security. There should be war if it is inevitable, not that it should not be done at all. But, immediately, there is no need for war. This is what I have said," he added. (With inputs from agencies) First Published: 28 Apr 2025, 06:52 AM IST
