Kate Hudson's 'Soul Reset' Vacation Included This Bestie Who Is Still Mending a Broken Heart
Before the summer ends, Kate Hudson made sure to take one last getaway with her mom, Goldie Hawn, and her bestie, who is still nursing a broken heart. Hudson described it as a 'soul reset,' which might be the perfect way to describe her BFF Dakota Johnson's year. The 35-year-old Materialists star called off her engagement to Chris Martin in June after an eight-year, on-again, off-again relationship. A People source said, 'It feels final this time.' So far, Johnson and Martin have not reconciled, and instead, she went on a horseback-riding adventure. Johnson slipped into the second image of the carousel while cuddling Hudson's daughter, Rani, 6, in her lap while Hawn stuck her tongue out and Hudson grinned mischievously at the camera lens. It looked like the perfect way to end the summer season. You can see the photos here. Johnson has been leaning on Hudson during her time of need. In July, the dynamic duo was spotted on a yacht off the coast of Ibiza, Spain. They were sporting bikinis while they relaxed in the blazing sun. The women became lifelong friends after growing up together in Hollywood. Hawn was close with Johnson's mother, Melanie Griffith, so their sweet bond makes sense. It doesn't sound like the Fifty Shades of Grey actress is sitting at home dwelling on her Martin split when she isn't vacationing with Hudson either. She's already announced that her next project will be behind the camera as a first-time feature film director. 'I think I will direct a feature, a very small one, hopefully soon,' Johnson shared at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July, per The Hollywood Reporter. 'We're making it with Vanessa Burghardt, who played my daughter in Cha Cha Real Smooth. She's an incredible autistic actress.' 'I've always felt that I'm not ready to direct a feature. I don't have the confidence,' Johnson added. 'But with [Burghardt], I feel very protective, and I know her very well, and … I just won't let anybody else do it.' The 35-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey actress popped up in a photo dump that Hudson shared on Instagram on Thursday, Aug. 7. "Soul reset," the 46-year-old How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days captioned the post, which featured photos of her with family and friends while enjoying time off the grid in Colorado. Hudson opened the post with a photo of herself sitting outside in a brown bikini with her guitar in hand. She also included some selfies taken on horseback and while biking around the picturesque landscape. Her daughter Rani Rose, was featured in a few photos, including one of the mother-daughter pair enjoying a drink. In the snapshot, Kate wore a cream cowboy hat that complemented Rani's turquoise one with a pink ribbon. Johnson appeared in the second photo, sitting on a couch in a cabin next to Hudson, who took the photo. Rani was cozied up in the actress's lap, and Hudson's mom, Hawn, 79, smiled behind the trio. The stars have a lengthy history between them. Johnson is the daughter of Hawn's longtime friend Melanie Griffith, and they spent time together while growing up in the industry. More recently, Johnson soaked up the sun alongside Hudson while yachting in Ibiza shortly after her split from Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin. News of Johnson and Martin's split after their nearly eight-year, on-off relationship broke in June 2025. "It feels final this time," an exclusive source said at the time. While reps for the stars didn't confirm the news, Johnson stepped out the following day without her engagement ring, appearing to confirm that they were no longer an item. During her girls' trip with Hudson in July, the Materialists star appeared to be in good spirits and rocked a white bikini. Hudson opted for a yellow string bikini emblazoned with cherries. A source close to Johnson said that she's been 'doing well' since the split. 'The split wasn't exactly a shock," they added, explaining that she and Martin "had the same issues for a while."The insider continued, saying, 'She wants to live her life very intentionally — she doesn't want to have any regrets. She loves all her creative projects and is excited about her career. She believes there is more to life than work, though. She wants a meaningful life on all levels." Shortly after her trip with Hudson, she announced plans to direct her first feature-length film.
