Actor David Morrissey is banned from driving after 'being caught speeding three times within a week' in his £40k Mini

The Walking Dead star David Morrissey was banned from driving today after being caught speeding three times in a week. The 61-year-old actor was sentenced after he was caught driving his £40,000 black Mini Countryman at 46mph in a 40mph zone on the A406 in Willesden, North West London, at 5.41am on August 2 last year. Just two days later, he clocked at 55mph and 48mph in 40mph zones on the A40 near Greenford on August 4 and 5, at 5.23am and 2.35am respectively. Morrissey did not attend a short hearing at Willesden Magistrates' Court today and was handed an £5,700 fine. Prosecutor Maya Arputham said: 'Morrissey should pay the full £1,500 costs for the trial last week included in the fine.' The Bafta-nominated actor already had nine points on his licence, and was handed nine more which gave him an automatic ban for driving for six months. Morrissey, of Camden, North London, previously denied but was found guilty of three charges of excess speeding 40mph after a three-hour trial last week. Representing the actor, Conall Bailie said: 'There will be no issue in Morrissey paying the fine. 'But the court costs are a significant amount. The trial was a matter that took up less than three hours of court time. It wasn't particularly lengthy.' District Judge Jack Walsh said: 'The sum of £1,500 in court costs appears to me to be eminently reasonable. 'I have found all three offences proved. He is convicted of all three offences. He did not have a clean driving record. 'The case he put to court was entirely illegitimate, and he had a chance to come to court and give evidence. 'A defendant who forces the prosecution to pay attention to such close detail to prove his case is likely to be liable to the full prosecution costs as a result of adopting that sort of approach to the case.' Morrissey, whose net worth is in the region of £2.4million, was married to the daughter of painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, Esther Freud, but they separated in 2020. His debut role came when he was cast in the television series 'One Summer' in 1983 at the age of 18. He then attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. Morrissey is best known for playing 'The Governor' in the FX series 'The Walking Dead'. He was nominated for a Bafta for his role as Stephen Collins in the 2003 political thriller series, 'State of Play'. Other notable roles include Ripley Holden in 'Blackpool', Aulus Platius in the Sky TV show 'Britannia,' and the criminal taxi driver Vince McKee in BBC drama 'The Driver'. In 2022, he starred in the BBC crime series 'Sherwood,' which won a best drama series award in 2023. Morrissey has also directed short films and the television dramas Sweet Revenge in 2001 and Passer By in 2004.

Carlisle man caught drug-driving twice in three weeks... on the same stretch of road

A CARLISLE motorcyclist was caught drug-driving on the same stretch of city road twice in less than three weeks. Rhys Ponting, aged 26, of Linton Street, has been handed a 16-month ban following two incidents in successive months earlier this year. At Carlisle Magistrates' Court, prosecutor George Shelley told how Ponting was first stopped on Eden Bridge, just after 3.30am, on February 13. He was riding a Honda MSX 125. Ponting was found to have only a provisional driving licence and was unable to prove his riding competence by showing a valid CBT (compulsory basic training) certificate, as required. A roadside drug wipe proved positive for cannabis. And a subsequent evidential specimen revealed the level of a drug breakdown product in Ponting's bloodstream was above the legal driving limit. The court heard Ponting did not know further action would be taken against him at the time he was stopped for a second time, just 19 days later. On March 4, two police officers undertaking static observations identified a motorcycle — Ponting's Honda — which appeared to be speeding over Eden Bridge. They followed the bike on to Kingstown Road where Ponting was given reasons for the stop. Officers detected the smell of cannabis. 'He had reddening around the eyes and slow speech,' said Mr Shelley. Another roadside test proved positive for cannabis and a further evidential reading showed he was again over the legal driving limit. In court Ponting admitted two drug driving charges; plus driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence on February 13; and failing to produce a motorcycle training course certificate of competence. Mitigation was advance on his behalf by defence solicitor Duncan Campbell, who told how Ponting used cannabis on a therapeutic basis. Consumption of the drug had been 'long before' each of the two incidents and not immediately prior, stressed Mr Campbell. Ponting worked night shift for a waste recycling company. Magistrates imposed £400 fines for each of the drug-driving offences which, with other court costs, left Ponting with a court bill totalling £1,290.

'Harry Potter' stars banned from driving after being caught speeding

Two stars of the "Harry Potter" films, including actress Emma Watson, were each banned from driving for six months Wednesday after being caught speeding in separate incidents. Watson, 35, who played Hermione Granger, the friend of boy wizard Potter in the hugely popular movie franchise, was banned for driving at 38 miles (61 km) an hour in a 30-mile zone in southeastern Banbury last July. Zoe Wanamaker, 76, who played Quidditch teacher Madame Hooch in "Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone", was banned for six months for her offence. She had been caught driving at 46 miles an hour in a 40-mile zone of the M4 motorway in southeastern Berkshire last August. The cases were dealt with separately by a lower magistrates court in the town of High Wycombe. Neither of the stars attended the hearings, at which they were each fined £1,044 ($1,400). Watson, who was stopped while driving her blue Audi, has been studying at Oxford University. Her lawyer told the court that although she was a student "she is in a position to pay the fine".

Man arrested after leading police on chase in Craven County

BRIDGETON, N.C. (WNCT) — A man was arrested after Bridgeton Police officers tried to stop him on his motorcycle for a traffic offense on June 4, 2025. The driver, Shayne Hayes, 39, led officers on a chase into New Bern but the chase was stopped due to Hayes' driving and being a danger to the public, officers said. Warrants were then taken out for Hayes' arrest on felony fleeing to elude arrest and numerous traffic violations. Officers went to Hayes' home on Yarmouth Road Saturday, June 7th to serve the warrants and they said Hayes ran away into the neighborhood and hid from them. He was eventually found and taken into custody. Hayes was also charged with resisting, obstructing and delaying arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hayes was jailed in the Craven County Jail without bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
