Reece Walsh's perfect response after Broncos try celebration sparks NRL debate

Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh has defended his audacious try celebration against the Titans after sparking debate around the NRL world about whether he should be performing backflips so soon after returning from a serious knee injury. Walsh turned heads in an eye-catching performance for Brisbane on Sunday that also included a heated on-field confrontation with teammate, Kotoni Staggs. But it was the decision to mark his stunning second half try with an acrobatic celebration that left many questioning the Brisbane No.1. And it was enough to give coach Michael Maguire heart palpitations after Walsh executed a manoeuvre that American gymnastics sensation Simone Biles would have been proud of. Walsh is a confidence player and the celebration was further proof that the livewire No.1's swagger is back, with some arguing it should be embraced by Maguire, rather than discouraged. But others insisted the Brisbane coach would be rightly concerned seeing his superstar fullback performing backflips when his leg is heavily strapped and he looks a little ginger after returning last month from a knee injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks. Calling the moment live on SEN League, former NRL star Justin Horo described the try celebration as 'a beautiful 10 out of 10'. But after seeing Walsh appear to prop awkwardly in his stride before running over to score, Horo admits his heart was in his mouth after witnessing the acrobatics that followed. "Considering the injury and the fact he looked like he was on a treadmill here because he looked like he'd done his hammy. I thought he'd done a soft tissue injury there," Horo said after Walsh briefly appeared to pull up lame before the tryline. "It's almost a perfect 10 out of 10 for the celebration if you're not factoring in that he's been out for the last six weeks with a PCL injury." And he suggested the reaction to his celebration was blown out of proportion. "I don't mind mate, it's all for a good cause and I've been doing that stuff my whole life," he told ABC radio after the game. The Brisbane fullback also insisted there were no issues with Staggs after chastising his teammate for a first-half error, before the pair combined for Walsh's try. "I feel like it's my job to get him involved in the games and I feel like there's a few games there where I didn't do my job to unlock 'Tones (Staggs)," Walsh added. "And I feel like I've just got to keep building that connection with him and getting him that ball where he's good and it's awesome to see him playing some good footy." Some commentators thought Walsh's spray showed there might be fractures in the Broncos playing group. But others argued it simply showed that they care, as you hardly ever see disinterested players call out their teammates' mistakes. Broncos captain Adam Reynolds and coach Michael Maguire both stated it was completely normal in the heat of the moment. "We're trying to be perfect out there," Reynolds said after the game. "It's not always going to go to plan, but we're adults, we talk about a situation when it happens. Sure enough, they fixed it up and scored a long-range try so they're working hard, and it's always good to have that feedback on the field." Whether or not it's him trying to get the ball to him early or not, Reece does wear his heart on his sleeve and that's why we love him and the boys love playing with him."

Nicho Hynes dedicates post-try celebration to Cameron Munster after tragic news

Nicho Hynes has revealed his try celebration against the Dolphins on Friday night was dedicated to his friend and former teammate Cameron Munster who is dealing with the death of his father. Munster bravely led Queensland out on the field and to victory in Sydney after the tragic death of his father Steven last weekend. Munster left State of Origin camp to be with his family earlier in the week, but returned for the captain's run. And the newly appointed Queensland captain was instrumental in leading his side to a historic Game 3 win. And Hynes has dedicated his performance to his former teammate. The Cronulla Sharks halfback had Steven written on his wristband and was able to dedicate a celebratory dance for his friend after scoring a try. "I've just been thinking about him a lot," Hynes said after the game. "I've been talking to my girlfriend about it. It's like, that could have been me. That could be anyone waking up without their dad or a parent. "I'm sending lots of love to his family. I just remember after games at Melbourne, seeing his old man and old lady in the sheds. Always smiling and happy. It touched me a lot, big time." Hynes played with Munster from 2019 to 2021 during his time at the Storm. Hynes was playing as a utility and fullback at that stage and credited his development to his friend who invited him into his home. "In my first pre-season there I was a nobody. I was literally there on a train-and-trial deal and he didn't have to give me any time of day," Hynes said. "But he ended up having me at his house for a couple of weeks and whenever he wanted to go for a feed, he'd ask me to go for a feed. "He was just someone who was so nice and caring and wanted to help out and make me better. I looked up to him. I've looked up to him ever since I met him. He's just someone I idolise. Even now, seeing the way he's handled it and went out and performed the other night, I don't think I've seen and played with a better rugby league player live." Munster is sitting out this weekend to be with his family, while Hynes already put in arguably one of his best performances of the season. The halfback crossed for two tries, had two line breaks and one try assist in his team's 24-12 win over the Dolphins. Hynes has been heavily criticised in recent weeks with the Sharks losing to the Broncos and Storm in recent weeks. But their latest win sees them momentarily jump back into the top eight.

Canberra Raiders stars produce one of the most ridiculous try celebrations ever seen during NRLW season-opener

The Canberra Raiders' NRLW side produced one of the most bizarre try celebrations ever seen, with two players appearing to mimic a farmer milking a cow. Try July has returned for the sixth time and will see players around the NRL and NRLW showcase their best celebrations to help raise money for charity. And during their season-opening match against the Dragons, Raiders NRLW stars Sophie Holyman and Chante Temara made their celebration entry. Temara set up Holyman for a try in the second half, popping the ball up to the prop-forward who blasted through the defence to put Canberra within four points of St George, with 16 minutes left on the clock. But after touching down, Holyman knelt down on the floor and appeared to pretend to be a cow. Temara then knelt down next to her team-mate and moved her hands as if she were milking. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Common Sport (@ The pair laughed and shared a quick hug after the celebration. But they left commentators perplexed by the bizarre moment. 'Oh my goodness,' one commentator said. 'OK... Dairy farmer, dairy farmer,' another added. 'We're off to the dairy, we should stress,' the commentator said. It came after the Raiders NRL side also produced a hilarious celebration last year appearing to take a jab at England cricket star Jonny Bairstow. They mimiced the England wicket keeper's controversial stumping by Alex Carey during the 2023 Ashes Series on the side of the footy pitch. Meanwhile, league's top-two try scorers added to their individual tallies as St George Illawarra sealed a 36-14 win at the GIO Stadium. Dragons fullback Teagan Berry registered her 30th four-pointer and Raiders winger Madison Bartlett scored her 27th in the Red V's victory. Eighteen-year-old debutant Indie Bostock took just three minutes to score a runaway 80-metre try for the Dragons after being called up into the centres from the extended bench. The star of the NSW U19s State of Origin win last month, and the sister of Dolphins winger Jack, added a second by supporting Berry down the right after the break. That put the visitors up 18-4 but the Raiders' revival came through tries to Bartlett and Holyman. St George Illawarra responded with another three tries - Berry, halfback and captain Raecene McGregor and winger Margot Vella. The Dragons only won two of nine games last year but rookie coach Nathan Cross seems to have them on course for a few more in 2025.
