Reece Walsh's perfect response after Broncos try celebration sparks NRL debate

Yahoo7 days ago
Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh has defended his audacious try celebration against the Titans after sparking debate around the NRL world about whether he should be performing backflips so soon after returning from a serious knee injury. Walsh turned heads in an eye-catching performance for Brisbane on Sunday that also included a heated on-field confrontation with teammate, Kotoni Staggs.
But it was the decision to mark his stunning second half try with an acrobatic celebration that left many questioning the Brisbane No.1. And it was enough to give coach Michael Maguire heart palpitations after Walsh executed a manoeuvre that American gymnastics sensation Simone Biles would have been proud of.
Walsh is a confidence player and the celebration was further proof that the livewire No.1's swagger is back, with some arguing it should be embraced by Maguire, rather than discouraged. But others insisted the Brisbane coach would be rightly concerned seeing his superstar fullback performing backflips when his leg is heavily strapped and he looks a little ginger after returning last month from a knee injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks.
Calling the moment live on SEN League, former NRL star Justin Horo described the try celebration as 'a beautiful 10 out of 10'. But after seeing Walsh appear to prop awkwardly in his stride before running over to score, Horo admits his heart was in his mouth after witnessing the acrobatics that followed.
"Considering the injury and the fact he looked like he was on a treadmill here because he looked like he'd done his hammy. I thought he'd done a soft tissue injury there," Horo said after Walsh briefly appeared to pull up lame before the tryline. "It's almost a perfect 10 out of 10 for the celebration if you're not factoring in that he's been out for the last six weeks with a PCL injury."

But Walsh says he was just doing his bit for the NRL's Try July campaign, where every try celebration across the month sees $5000 donated towards either the the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation (ASCF) and the Player Hardship Fund. And he suggested the reaction to his celebration was blown out of proportion. "I don't mind mate, it's all for a good cause and I've been doing that stuff my whole life," he told ABC radio after the game.
The Brisbane fullback also insisted there were no issues with Staggs after chastising his teammate for a first-half error, before the pair combined for Walsh's try. "I feel like it's my job to get him involved in the games and I feel like there's a few games there where I didn't do my job to unlock 'Tones (Staggs)," Walsh added. "And I feel like I've just got to keep building that connection with him and getting him that ball where he's good and it's awesome to see him playing some good footy."
Some commentators thought Walsh's spray showed there might be fractures in the Broncos playing group. But others argued it simply showed that they care, as you hardly ever see disinterested players call out their teammates' mistakes.
Broncos captain Adam Reynolds and coach Michael Maguire both stated it was completely normal in the heat of the moment. "We're trying to be perfect out there," Reynolds said after the game. "It's not always going to go to plan, but we're adults, we talk about a situation when it happens. Sure enough, they fixed it up and scored a long-range try so they're working hard, and it's always good to have that feedback on the field."

Maguire added: "Reece, he loves his footy and he's striving to continually be the best, and that's all the boys and that's the perfection they're chasing. Whether or not it's him trying to get the ball to him early or not, Reece does wear his heart on his sleeve and that's why we love him and the boys love playing with him."

Upper house pushing Labor on 'secret' gambling ads plan

The federal government is about to be forced to release a draft response to a landmark gambling reform report, which has been left untouched for more than two years. Communications Minister Anika Wells, who picked up the portfolio after Labor's May 3 election win, has flagged upcoming changes to gambling advertising. Her first meeting outside of department briefings was with Rod Glover, the husband of late Labor MP Peta Murphy, who championed a ban on gambling ads. A draft response by the communications department to the "you win some, you lose more" report handed down by a bipartisan parliamentary committee was prepared for the previous minister in November 2024. But the department refused to release the 32-page document under freedom of information laws. The Murphy report's key recommendation was to phase out gambling advertising on television and online, which received unanimous support from Labor, coalition and crossbench MPs on the committee. Labor's draft policy, which was never formally released but briefed to stakeholders in mid-2024, included banning betting ads during, before and after live sports broadcasts and limiting them to two an hour outside of that parameter. Independent senator David Pocock is pushing to have the draft recommendations and ministerial briefings released under a Senate order for the production of documents, after freedom of information requests were similarly rejected. The Liberals and the Greens have given their support, meaning his order is set to pass the Senate on Wednesday, giving Labor until the end of the month to comply or explain why they will continue to keep the documents secret. A third order requests correspondence between the prime minister and gambling sector representatives and lobbying efforts from sporting codes after he intervened to shelve any action before the election. Labor's inaction was "one of the biggest failures of the last parliament and a wrong I hope we can right this time", Senator Pocock told AAP. Reform advocates are keen to find a middle ground, arguing the longer the status quo goes on, the more people are being hurt as there are few restrictions on gambling advertising. While stakeholders are pushing for a blanket ban, there is an openness to compromise on restricting when betting ads can be broadcast on live TV. They're also pushing hard for a complete advertising ban on social media and on inducements, which is when gambling companies entice people to bet more by offering incentives such as bonus bets. But the gambling lobby is strongly against a blanket social media ban, instead saying technology could be used to avoid targeting children. The sector is similarly opposed to stopping inducements. There is a willingness to discuss stopping broad inducement advertising, but gambling companies want to retain the right to push advertising to people signed up to their platforms. The Murphy review recommended that the government immediately prohibit online gambling inducements and their advertising. Commercial broadcasters and sports codes argued they needed advertising revenue to stay viable, while gambling companies warned a blanket ban would push Australians into using illegal overseas wagering sites. The AFL and NRL receive tens of millions of dollars a year as a cut from gambling agencies. Some advocates are hopeful there will be an announcement on the next steps before the end of the year, with the federal government yet to respond to the landmark report 25 months after it was handed down. ‘Carlton man': Voss responds to trade bombshell

Carlton coach Michael Voss has poured cold water over a potential Gold Coast move for star forward Charlie Curnow, declaring the star forward was a 'Carlton man' and would stay that way. It was reported on Tuesday night that the dual Coleman Medal winner was open to a move to the Suns for lifestyle reasons. Carlton reportedly shut down the possibility of the move as it braces for the departure of key tall Tom De Koning to St Kilda. Voss was also emphatic on Wednesday that Curnow, who is contracted at the club until the end of 2029, was going to be a Blue for life. 'It's probably just that, it's just speculation for us. Charlie is a Carlton man and he'll stay a Carlton man,' he said. 'I'm not sure how much more emphatic I need to be on that. I appreciate these times of the year and when you're not going so well there's always some speculation on your players. 'But it probably ends there for us … no (haven't spoken to him) because again it's just speculation. 'It's very hard to operate on conversation or even answer something on hearsay … Charlie is a very important person to us and he'll play out his career here – he's a Carlton person and will stay one.' There has been consistent talk about the shake-up incoming chief executive Graham Wright will have on the Blues' football department. But Voss shut that down too, saying Wright's entry into the club will change nothing but 'the names at the desk' when it comes to list management. 'I think the way we operate as football clubs, we tend to have a planned strategy about those things,' he said. 'We've got a list management committee, which I am one man in that (and) so is Graham, as well our list manager as well as our football manager. 'We strategise that out from a long way out and we put that together as a team, that's the way we will continue to do it as we always have. 'As normal, there's no change in the way we're operating, the names at the desk change because Brian moves out and Graham comes in. 'But in terms of how we go about our list management, strategy and build, everyone will have their input at the right time.'

Souths player speaks out after revealing post-match moment with Latrell Mitchell

Jai Arrow has described the injury toll at South Sydney as 'crazy' and 'laughable' after he was spotted being consoled by teammate Latrell Mitchell during last Friday night's loss to Penrith. The sad post-match moment summed up the current mood at the Rabbitohs, who saw Keaon Koloamatangi become the latest player sidelined with an injury that rules him out for the remainder of the season. The Bunnies forward limped off the field in the second half after his ankle buckled in a tackle on Panthers star Luke Garner. Scans later confirmed he'd suffered a high-grade syndesmosis injury that would require surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the year. It continues a wretched run of injuries for Souths, who are also missing Mitchell, Cameron Murray, Peter Mamouzelos, Jayden Sullivan, Cody Walker and Campbell Graham. Halfback Jamie Humphreys has also been ruled out of Saturday's round 21 clash against Cronulla with concussion, paving the way for English recruit Lewis Dodd to earn his first crack as starting halfback for the depleted Bunnies. Arrow was visibly distraught after the loss to four-time defending premiers Penrith, and could be seen burying his head into Mitchell's chest as his injured teammate did his best to console him. Arrow has since addressed the current predicament at the club, and admitted the stark reality of the injury crisis hit home when he visited the casualty ward at Rabbitohs training on Tuesday. Jai Arrow addresses grim injury situation at Souths "I went in and saw the physio and the rehab crew, there's a pretty solid 1-13 (team) there," Arrow told reporters. The brutal truth is that Koloamatangi's injury means Arrow and Tallis Duncan go into Saturday night's game against the Sharks as the only two Rabbitohs players to feature in every game this season. In contrast, Cronulla have seven players who've played every game. "It's pretty crazy and pretty laughable with the amount of people we have missing at the moment," Arrow added about the dilemma at the Bunnies. "But it is what it is, all you've got to do is keep turning up and enjoying each other's company and turn up for each other on the field. That's all we can do, really." Souths have had the most games missed due to injury amongst all NRL clubs this year, and it's taken a heavy toll. The club are languishing in 15th on the ladder with six games and a bye remaining, with veteran coach Wayne Bennett facing the possibility of the first wooden spoon of his long and decorated career. But Arrow is refusing to dwell on what could have been this year at Souths, who showed so much promise at the start of the season when they won four of their first five games. "It's funny, I think back, we were 4-1 at one stage,' he said. "But I'm not one to dwell on the past. It is what it is. The most important thing is that we've got to have faith in each other and just enjoy this next six weeks of playing footy together." RELATED: Missed detail about Sexton called out after axing for Galvin Major blow for Panthers as two players sign with Dragons Cameron Smith flags new role after missing gig to Kevin Walters Murray hasn't played at all in 2025 after rupturing his Achilles in pre-season, which set the tone for the Rabbitohs' horror year. However, the skipper has eased back into field work at training and is pushing for a return this season, in what would be a massive boost for Souths. Critics have questioned why the club would risk bringing Murray back from a delicate injury when they are out of finals contention but Arrow has no concerns for his captain. "Someone like Cam, he won't play unless he's ready," he said. "I'm sure he'll make the right decision whether he comes back and plays or not but I'm pretty confident we'll be seeing him back in weeks to come in a Rabbitohs jersey."
