The Pro 3 is 8BitDo's first controller with swappable buttons
8BitDo has released a new version of its wireless Pro controller that was last updated in 2021. Many of 8BitDo's recent controller releases, including the Ultimate 2, feature an asymmetrical joystick layout like Nintendo and Microsoft use. But the new Pro 3 mirrors the design of the PlayStation DualSense controller, with side-by-side sticks that are now upgraded with drift-resistant TMR technology. The Pro 3 is also 8BitDo's first controller that lets you easily swap the arrangement of its ABXY buttons. The 8BitDo Pro 2 launched at $49.99 four years ago, but the new Pro 3 is debuting with a slightly steeper $69.99 price. 8BitDo has also switched to using a 1,000mAh rechargeable battery for the Pro 3, and while the company says it offers up to 20 hours of gameplay on a full charge, it's not removable. The Pro 3 includes a convenient charging dock that doubles as storage for its 2.4GHz dongle. When the controller dies, it can still be used while connected to a console via USB, and it will charge while you play. The Pro 3 is available for preorder starting today and officially will be on sale on August 12th. There are three color options, each of which matches different retro consoles: gray (PlayStation), G classic (Game Boy), and purple (GameCube). The Pro 3's design is nearly identical to the Pro 2, but it's gained a few extra buttons. It carries forward the Pro 2's back buttons while introducing an additional set of smaller shoulder buttons. Its triggers also use Hall effect sensors for improved accuracy and durability, while newly added switches let you choose a longer trigger for racing games or a shorter one for faster reaction times in FPS titles. Compatibility includes support for Windows, Android, both Switch consoles (with waking capabilities), SteamOS (you can shake the controller to wake the OLED Steam Deck), and Apple's hardware, with Bluetooth, USB, or wireless 2.4GHz connectivity. Out of the box, the Pro 3 uses the Xbox's button layout, but you can swap the A and B buttons to match Nintendo Switch controllers, or rearrange them all to whatever layout you prefer. The Pro 3 works with 8BitDo's Ultimate Software V2 so that you can remap the layout, and the controller can store and switch between three different custom profiles. Although the ergonomics are questionable, 8BitDo is also including a pair of arcade-style ball-top caps that can be attached to the Pro 3's joysticks.

PlayStation's Big Plan to Defy the Switch 2 Is a Wireless Fight Stick for PS5 and PC
Sony's in a strange state now that the Switch 2 has finally seen the light of day. In an effort to claw back some of the spotlight, PlayStation declared it's making its first wireless fight stick, called 'Project Defiant.' At first glance, the controller seems like a solid option for fighting game fanatics. The main issue is that Sony is holding it back for an entire year. Project Defiant, a name that seems a little too on the nose considering the other big gaming hardware hitting the scene today, is a full-on fight stick complete with the typical PlayStation-centric layout you know from the DualSense controller. It's a device made with the hardcore fighting game player in mind. The pad has toolless interchangeable restrictor gates that sit inside a compartment whenever you need them. Restrictor gates sit underneath the stick to create a physical sense of the stick's orientation. PlayStation's new controller supports the Japanese-style square restrictor gate as well as a circle and octagon. The buttons are built on mechanical switches, which should hopefully offer a tactile feel. Project Defiant is still a PlayStation controller, and you can access touchpad functions along the top of the controller. Sony's stark black and white design lends itself well to the typical fighting stick design, especially the glowing LED accent where the pane with the stick meets the raised button panel. Like its more recent headsets, the controller uses Sony's own PlayStation Link for low-latency connectivity, which means you'll need to use a special USB dongle. Sony says Project Defiant should be compatible with both PS5 and PC, but if you want to avoid the dongle, you can connect it via USB-C. The controller even includes its own carrying case. So you're probably wondering how much it costs or when you can get one. Unfortunately, Sony hasn't revealed anything about release timing beyond a planned launch in 2026. The company does tend to reveal peripherals months before launch, even before offering the device's official names, like Sony's 'Project Q' which eventually became the PlayStation Portal. There were only three months between the reveal of Sony's odd streaming handheld and its launch. Sony is hankering to claw as much spotlight away from Nintendo's Switch 2. The technology giant dropped trailers for a few key games at its latest PlayStation State of Play, though videos for big games like Ghost of Yōtei and Metal Gear Solid: Delta didn't include much to chew on. Yōtei was merely a teaser trailer for yet another State of Play set to debut in July. The more landmark announcements, like the new trailer for IO Interactive's 007: First Light alongside more footage of Silent Hill F. At the very least, the return of Final Fantasy Tactics with the new title The Ivalice Chronicles built up some buzz from longtime fans. We'll have to wait and see if there will be any more gaming hardware news that can burst the Switch 2's hype bubble. Sony is reportedly working on a handheld to rival the Switch or Steam Deck, but it has yet to materialize beyond rumors. We're still waiting to see if the Xbox-branded Asus gaming handheld can take our eyes away from either Nintendo's or Valve's latest devices. Last week, Windows Central reported Microsoft reportedly sidelined its own Xbox handheld so it could work on a version of Windows 11 made for handheld form factors.

The wireless GameCube controller for Switch 2 is available to preorder now
The wireless GameCube controller that's for use exclusively with the Nintendo Switch 2 can now be pre-ordered by those who have a Switch Online account. The controller costs $64.99, and is currently limited to one per account. That limitation has allowed it to remain in stock for a few hours already today. For those who've bought one, you'll get it on Switch 2's launch date, which is June 5th. Demand is high, so it's likely that you'll need to hang out in a waiting room for 30 minutes or so before you're let in to buy one. So, don't navigate away. Nintendo GameCube controller for Switch 2 $65 $65 at Nintendo While GameCube controller support on the original Switch is nothing new (made possible thanks to the GameCube controller plug-to-USB adapter, or with newer third-party USB versions based on the original controller's design), game support for the new wireless version is quite a bit more limited. It won't be compatible with Switch backwards compatible titles that work on the Switch 2, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, or at least support hasn't been confirmed yet. Instead, its use is limited to the GameCube games that are coming to Switch Online's Expansion Pack tier, which at launch will include The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, and more. This GameCube controller has USB-C charging, and comes with the C button that's used to summon GameChat features. Just a reminder: GameChat will be free to use for all Nintendo Switch 2 owners through March 31st, 2026.
