Kennedy Expressway Ohio Street ramp opening delayed when car drives onto fresh concrete

The Illinois Department of Transportation said the reopening of the Ohio Street ramp on the Kennedy Expressway has been delayed. IDOT said a car drove into the work zone and onto freshly poured concrete, damaging the concrete and pushing back the reopening of the outbound ramp by about a week. The third and final phase of the Kennedy Construction Project began in March. While this phase is running ahead of schedule by about a month, according to officials, the whole project isn't set to be completed until Thanksgiving. On June 5, the Division Street and Ontario Street on-ramps to the outbound Kennedy closed for about two weeks. On Monday, June 9, the outbound Kennedy off-ramps North and Fullerton avenues will close for about two weeks. The Ogden Avenue on-ramp to the outbound Kennedy is currently closed, as is the on-ramp at Armitage Avenue. They are expected to reopen the week of June 9. The Ohio Street ramp was also on track to reopen next week until the concrete was damaged. "Reminder: Follow posted signs and stay alert in work zones—your attention keeps everyone safe," IDOT wrote on their social media.

‘It's always in the back of your mind': NMDOT worker recalls being hit by distracted driver on I-25

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – All it took was a few seconds for a driver to take her eyes off the road and slam into two New Mexico Department of Transportation workers on I-25 in San Miguel County. They both consider themselves beyond lucky they didn't lose their lives that day. 'It's always back there it's always in the back of your mind,' said Michael Sanchez, NMDOT worker. 'I tell the guys everyday the way we came into work today is the way we should go home this afternoon, didn't happen for us that day.' Two weeks ago, on May 12, Sanchez didn't get to finish his work day. While working on a strip of I-25 between Ribera and Bernal, behind cones and multiple work zone signs, Sanchez was hit by a car. Albuquerque Police release new information about death of 1-year-old 'One of the guys yelled 'watch it', any, by the time I heard that it was too late,' said Sanchez. 'All I remember is rolling and winding up underneath the cable line and the median.' While lying there in shock, Sanchez said all he could think about was the rest of his coworkers. 'I was asking the coworkers that were there who else got hit, who else got hit,' said Sanchez. Thirty yards away the car also sideswiped his partner who, after impact, rolled under the front end of a NMDOT vehicle. Witnesses told police both men were airborne but somehow they are doing okay. 'I was hit on this arm, the elbow and my right side leg, upper leg my thigh and I don't know what I hit here with my chest,' Sanchez explained. Sanchez said he hasn't been approved to go back to work yet, but he isn't sure he even wants to. 'We pass by where the accident happened and it's right away I get bad anxiety off of it so I don't know,' said Sanchez. Something his wife, Betsy, has also picked up on. 'His hands just start getting antsy his demeanor is different,' said Betsy. 'What this girl did affected not just him, but it affected all of us.' A police report filed by New Mexico State Police states the 20-year-old driver, Mistidawn Roybal, turned around to check on her dog when she hit the two men and an orange traffic control barrier. 'It hurts because I almost lost him that day and I don't want to lose him,' said Betsy. They hope Roybal learns from her actions. 'I don't want to see this happen again, it's crazy,' said Sanchez. Roybal is facing two petty misdemeanor charges and a this degree felony for reckless driving. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. FHP cruiser struck on Palmetto Expressway work zone

A Kia slammed into a barricaded work zone on Palmetto Expressway early Sunday morning, causing a chain-reaction crash that damaged a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser, authorities said. The crash happened before 7 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near NW 57th Avenue. According to officials, a marked FHP vehicle was parked inside the active construction zone with its emergency lights flashing. A white Ford truck was stationed directly behind the patrol car. The gray Kia entered the work zone and struck the rear of the Ford truck. The impact shoved the truck forward, slamming it into the back of the FHP vehicle, troopers said. No information about injuries or charges was immediately released. The crash remains under investigation.

SUV slams into back of ODOT truck on I-90; officials issue warning

BRATENAHL, Ohio (WJW) – The Ohio Department of Transportation is reminding drivers about work zone safety after the latest in a string of collisions between civilian vehicles and ODOT trucks. Investigators said an ODOT crew was setting up to clean out drains on I-90 East near Eddy Road in Bratenahl on Wednesday morning. An SUV in the high-speed lane slammed into the back of an ODOT truck and trailer, parked behind the workers to provide them with a wall of protection, investigators said. One of the workers called 911 . 'One of the motorists hit our truck's mounted attenuator while we were doing a work zone and it's like multiple cars back there. I don't know how many that were involved,' the worker told the dispatcher. 'Twice in less than a week?' Another pileup on I-71 after driver stops Fortunately, most of the force of the collision was absorbed by a device towed behind the ODOT truck called an 'accident impact attenuator.' 'It's basically there to prevent the impact to the truck and save the wear and tear on the truck and also protect our employees that are working in front of the truck,' said ODOT spokesman Brent Kovacs. One of the ODOT workers was taken to the emergency room as a precaution and later released. No information has been released about the driver of the SUV. Whether that driver was at fault or was forced by another vehicle into the ODOT attenuator trailer and truck has not been made public. However, ODOT said the accident illustrates why all drivers must be aware of construction zones and daily work zones and drive with caution. 'Motorists have got to move over anytime they see a vehicle with flashing lights, or slow down as a last resort and this applies to all the lanes,' said Kovacs. The accident marks the 62nd time so far this year that ODOT equipment or employees have been struck by motorists on roadways across the state. Bay Village student critically injured during lacrosse game ODOT said in 2024, there were 84 such collisions. One of the big factors in the crashes has been distracted driving, and that's why many ODOT workers have grown accustomed to keeping one eye on their work and one eye on the traffic around them. 'Whatever that distraction may be, from your phone to eating to drinking coffee to doing something that's taking your mind, your hand off the steering wheel or your eyes off the road and you have to pay attention, keep all your senses on the roadway to ensure that it's safe for the men and women working on the road,' Kovacs said.
