‘It's always in the back of your mind': NMDOT worker recalls being hit by distracted driver on I-25
'It's always back there it's always in the back of your mind,' said Michael Sanchez, NMDOT worker. 'I tell the guys everyday the way we came into work today is the way we should go home this afternoon, didn't happen for us that day.'
Two weeks ago, on May 12, Sanchez didn't get to finish his work day. While working on a strip of I-25 between Ribera and Bernal, behind cones and multiple work zone signs, Sanchez was hit by a car.

'One of the guys yelled 'watch it', any, by the time I heard that it was too late,' said Sanchez. 'All I remember is rolling and winding up underneath the cable line and the median.'
While lying there in shock, Sanchez said all he could think about was the rest of his coworkers.
'I was asking the coworkers that were there who else got hit, who else got hit,' said Sanchez.
Thirty yards away the car also sideswiped his partner who, after impact, rolled under the front end of a NMDOT vehicle.
Witnesses told police both men were airborne but somehow they are doing okay.
'I was hit on this arm, the elbow and my right side leg, upper leg my thigh and I don't know what I hit here with my chest,' Sanchez explained.
Sanchez said he hasn't been approved to go back to work yet, but he isn't sure he even wants to.
'We pass by where the accident happened and it's right away I get bad anxiety off of it so I don't know,' said Sanchez.
Something his wife, Betsy, has also picked up on. 'His hands just start getting antsy his demeanor is different,' said Betsy. 'What this girl did affected not just him, but it affected all of us.'
A police report filed by New Mexico State Police states the 20-year-old driver, Mistidawn Roybal, turned around to check on her dog when she hit the two men and an orange traffic control barrier.
'It hurts because I almost lost him that day and I don't want to lose him,' said Betsy.
They hope Roybal learns from her actions. 'I don't want to see this happen again, it's crazy,' said Sanchez.
Roybal is facing two petty misdemeanor charges and a this degree felony for reckless driving.

Police close investigation into death of Gogglebox's George Gilbey
Police have concluded their investigation into the death of Gogglebox's George Gilbey. The 40-year-old had been 'working on a roof when he fell through a plastic skylight, landing on the ground below' in Shoeburyness in Essex last year, a previous inquest hearing was told. Mr Gilbey, of Clacton-on-Sea, suffered traumatic injuries to his head and torso and died on March 27 last year. Essex Police said on Wednesday that two men, who were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, will face no further action from the force. In a statement, the force said: 'Essex Police have confirmed their investigation into the death of George Gilbey last year has concluded. 'Two men who were arrested and released under investigation in connection with the incident in Shoebury on March 27, 2024, will face no further action from Essex Police. 'The thoughts of everyone at Essex Police remain with George's family and friends. 'The criminal investigation remains open and will be led by the Health and Safety Executive.' HSE inspector Natalie Prince said: 'We have been a part of this inquiry from the outset and we will continue to thoroughly investigate George's tragic death as the lead agency. 'This will aim to establish if there have been any breaches of health and safety law. 'We are in regular contact with George's family, and our thoughts remain with them at this time.' Mr Gilbey was best known for appearing on the Channel 4 series Gogglebox, where participants watch and comment on TV shows from the previous week. The reality star also appeared on the 14th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, reaching the final.

Veteran on moment car and bus crashes into garden hedge on 'horrific' junction
A VETERAN has spoken out about the moment a car and bus crashed into his garden hedge near a "horrific junction". Vernon Rowberry, a Tolladine Road resident for over 40 years, said it was 'no surprise' that two cars and a First Bus crashed outside his home. The 89-year-old was faced with what he claims was the latest of many crashes outside his home at 11pm on Saturday (August 9) which left seven people injured. "It was about 11pm and I heard and all mighty bang - I thought it was a firework - and I went outside and saw people staggering off the bus. "People had started to stand to get off the bus when it had hit the car. "One car went through my hedge and hit my apple tree. Mr Vernon said he was on the scene to help provide water to those affected in the crash. It also confirmed it has launched an internal investigation into the crash. Failed Towing Attempt Causes Unoccupied Car To Crash Into Restaurant Twice
It takes a lot of skill, or lack thereof, to crash a car you're not even driving. In this case, a towing attempt gone horribly wrong resulted in the vehicle intended to be towed crashing into a restaurant not just once, but twice. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office not only tells us how it all went down, but it shared security camera footage that shows the whole thing. On July 30, a maroon Mercury Montego parked in front of AutoZone in University Place, Washington. The driver left it there overnight, telling employees that he would be back to tow it away since it wasn't running well. He returned at 3:45 a.m. in a white Honda Pilot with a tow dolly to follow through on his promise. It wasn't until 5:15 that the driver began pulling the car not on the dolly, but using a tow rope, which snapped before he even got out of the lot. He tried to secure the car again, but failed epically at 5:50 when the car rolled back across the lot and crashed into the Pho and Teriyaki restaurant next to the AutoZone. The man made a valiant effort to stop the car from the outside using muscles and sheer force of will, but to no avail. He jumped away from the car right before the crash and appeared to avoid injury. That would be bad enough, but things got much worse. He succeeded in pulling the car to the other side of the lot, only for it to roll back across the lot and crash into the restaurant a second time. Once again, he pulled it away, only for the Montego to get caught up along a retaining wall and curb thanks to an amazingly long tow rope, leaving him unable to control it. At this point, he abandoned the car, which was now likely damaged beyond any repair you could buy at AutoZone, and left the scene. There are so many questions here. Why didn't he use the dolly he was towing behind the Pilot? Why did he continue to trust the tow rope that kept failing with ever more disastrous results? Why did he use such a long tow rope? Why didn't the woman who got out of the Pilot during the third attempt help at all? Also, kudos to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office for using the perfect soundtrack for this video: "Yakety Sax," better known as the Benny Hill theme. They are investigating this fiasco as a hit-and-run, which is appropriate, and amazing considering the car that hit the restaurant didn't even have a driver.
