His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took a significant step into the UAE's transport future this week — by boarding a passenger train on the Etihad Rail network from Dubai to Fujairah. The journey served as a real-time inspection of progress on the Etihad Rail passenger line, a project that is set to redefine how the UAE moves by connecting cities, boosting tourism, and supporting economic growth. Passenger operations are set to launch in 2026, with the full network ultimately linking 11 cities and regions across the country. Sheikh Mohammed was joined by Etihad Rail officials and project leaders, including Chief Business Support Officer Saeed Al Ahbabi, who briefed him on key achievements. The Etihad Rail passenger service is slated to begin operations in 2026 and aims to connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE - from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east. By 2030, it is expected to carry 36 million passengers annually. The initial four passenger rail stations have been identified in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. The Dubai station is expected near Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Fujairah's in Sakamkam, while Sharjah's will be close to its airport and University City. This phase forms part of the broader AED50 billion National Railways Programme, projected to deliver Dh200 billion in economic benefits over the next 50 years, including savings from improved logistics, accident reduction, urban planning enhancements, and tourism growth. Sheikh Mohammed highlighted Dubai's unique growth model, saying it is based on 'innovation, openness, and competitiveness,' while hosting a group of citizens, business leaders and officials in Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed that under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE continues to follow a development model rooted in investing in people, openness, innovation and strong community values. He highlighted that Dubai's futuristic vision is built upon a competitive and sustainable economy driven by innovation and supported by investment in advanced technology and smart infrastructure. He emphasised the importance of creating a flexible legislative environment that keeps pace with global economic shifts and meets the aspirations of investors and entrepreneurs.
