DG ISPR dismisses rumours of Army Chief becoming President

Listen to article The Pakistan Army has strongly rejected speculation on Field Marshal Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Syed Asim Munir vying to become president of Pakistan. Speaking to The Economist, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) DG Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry rubished such rumours as "completely baseless". — PTV News (@PTVNewsOfficial) August 6, 2025 His statement comes a month after the interior minister issued a similar rebuttal clarifying that there was no truth to speculation about the president being asked to resign or the field marshall aspiring to assume presidency. The Economist noted that FM Munir's popularity has surged since the May conflict with India. It further noted that the ruling coalition's recently acquired two-thirds majority in parliament further "ignited rumours that the army chief could become president too". Last month, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also rebuffed speculations on social media suggesting the ouster of President Asif Ali Zardari, calling them baseless. Commenting on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reported resolve to respond to terrorist attacks with military action, DG ISPR responded, 'this time, we will start from the East of India'. 'It will begin with deep strikes inside India,' he added. 'India must understand that they can be struck anywhere.' This time, we will start from the East of India DG ISPR Read: Interior minister rebuffs rumours of President Zardari's ouster as 'malicious campaign' He firmly denied any discussions or intentions concerning the president's resignation or a change in leadership. We are fully aware of who is behind the malicious campaign targeting President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the Chief of Army Staff. I have categorically stated that there has been no discussion, nor does any such idea exist, about the President being asked… — Mohsin Naqvi (@MohsinnaqviC42) July 10, 2025 "The sole focus of the COAS is the strength and stability of Pakistan, nothing else," reiterated the interior minister. Earlier this year, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in May formally conferred the rank of Field Marshal on COAS General Syed Asim Munir. The federal cabinet approved the promotion during a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, where ministers hailed the operational success of Operation Bunyanum Mursoos. The operation was described as a historic military victory that repelled Indian aggression and ensured the country's sovereignty. Field Marshal Munir also praised the political leadership for their 'strategic foresight' during Operation Marka-i-Haq. FM Munir is the nation's second army officer to be promoted to field marshal since 1947, since independence. Former army chief and military dictator Gen Ayub Khan was conferred the rank in 1959. Shortly afterwards, in Washington, US President Donald Trump said he was 'honoured' to meet FM Munir during a rare White House meeting, crediting him with playing a key role in halting the conflict between Pakistan and India.

No US role in brokering ceasefire with Pakistan, says Indian foreign secretary

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addresses the media, announcing India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack, in New Delhi on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Courtesy: Indian Ministry of External Affairs/ File Listen to article India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has again contradicted the United States' account of Washington's role in mediating the recent ceasefire agreement between New Delhi and Islamabad. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told members of the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs that the "truce was a result of bilateral discussions, initiated by Pakistan, and that no third party—including the US—was involved in the process." During a closed-door session of the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs, Misri claimed that Pakistan initiated the contact for a ceasefire on May 10 via the Director General Military Operations (DGMO) channels. He further claimed that Indian DGMO Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai was initially unavailable but later engaged with his Pakistani counterpart Maj Gen Kashif Abdullah in two rounds of talks, which led to the agreement to halt hostilities, Hindustan Times reported. Refuting repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that Washington played a role in brokering peace, Misri said Trump's comments were made via social media and not through official diplomatic channels. Misri further noted that Trump had since softened his language, shifting from "mediation" to offering "help." — PTV News (@PTVNewsOfficial) May 20, 2025 Tensions between both countries flared after a deadly April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), that left 26 civilians dead. India blamed Pakistan-based elements without providing evidence; Islamabad rejected the claim. India responded by closing the Wagah border, revoking Pakistani visas, and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty—moves Pakistan labelled as an 'act of war.' Read More: Pakistan never requested ceasefire: DG ISPR By May 6–7, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and downed six Indian jets, including Rafales, and intercepted several Israeli-origin Harop drones. The US played a central role in facilitating backchannel diplomacy. Secretary Rubio and Vice President JD Vance held talks with senior leaders from both countries, including PMs Shehbaz Sharif and Narendra Modi, as well as top defence and intelligence officials. Following Trump's announcement, both countries suspended military activity across land, air, and sea, though allegations of ceasefire breach were also reported from both sides of the Line of Control (LoC). While Pakistan praised US involvement in the talks, India has downplayed Washington's role.

Pakistan Backpedals On IAF Pilot Custody Claim After India's Hard-Hitting Briefing

Last Updated: During the climbdown, Islamabad exposed its own narrative that had been fueling the spread of such falsehoods on social media. A senior Pakistan Army official walked back the claim that Islamabad had captured an Indian Air Force pilot during the 100-hour military action between the two countries. This followed the Indian Air Force's confirmation on Sunday that all pilots involved in 'Operation Sindoor' had returned home safely, noting that the Air Force successfully achieved all its objectives during the precision strikes against Pakistan. 'I can confirm that we don't have any (Indian) pilots in custody. This is all part of social media chatter and part of fake news and propaganda generated from multiple sources," said Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). پاکستان کے پاس کوئی بھارتی پائلٹ نہیں، ڈی جی آئی ایس پی آر۔۔۔!!! — Mughees Ali (@mugheesali81) May 11, 2025 During the climbdown, Chaudhry — who has been briefing the world on the India-Pakistan military crisis — exposed its own narrative that had been fueling the spread of such falsehoods on social media. PIB Fact-Checked 'IAF Pilot' Claim Earlier on Saturday, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) debunked social media claims that an Indian Air Force pilot named Shivani Singh had been captured by Pakistan. The PIB's fact-checking unit clarified, saying: 'Indian Female Air Force pilot has NOT been captured." It added, 'Pro-Pakistan social media handles claim that an Indian Female Air Force pilot, Squadron Leader Shivani Singh, has been captured in Pakistan. This claim is FAKE!" The agency also dismissed a separate claim suggesting that an Indian pilot had ejected from a fighter aircraft over Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), calling it fake. Days after PIB's fact-check exposed the false pro-Pakistan narrative, Islamabad today itself acknowledged the misinformation campaign, stating that no Indian pilot was in their custody. 'All Our Pilots Are Back Home' Air Marshal AK Bharti, during a press briefing on Operation Sindoor, confirmed that all pilots involved in Operation Sindoor have returned home safely. 'We are in a combat scenario and losses are part of combat. However, we have achieved all our objectives, and all our pilots are back home," Bharti said. 'We have downed a few Pakistani planes," he added, while declining to reveal the number, citing ongoing technical assessments. 'Pakistani aircraft were prevented from entering Indian airspace, so we don't have wreckage, but we are certain of the hits," he added. Watch India Pakistan Breaking News on CNN-News18. "Thoda Seekh Lo": Pakistani Journalist Slammed For Posting Old Gaza Video As Op Sindoor

New Delhi: The Indian Armed Forces launched 'Operation Sindoor' on Wednesday, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), weeks after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. India carried out 24 precision missile strikes targeting 9 locations, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke. Amid this, a Pakistani journalist shared an old video from Gaza claiming it was of the Indian strike. 'Indian attack in Bahawalpur,' Sabir Shakir wrote on X, sharing the footage showing missile strikes being carried out at night. Shakir's X bio says he is a journalist with Pakistan's ARY news channel. بھارتی حملہ بہالپور میں — Sabir Shakir (@ARYSabirShakir) May 6, 2025 A Google reverse image search of the video shows it was first shared by Kabul News in 2023, reporting on an incident from Gaza, and it is not from Pakistan, as claimed. 'Israel intensified its bombing of Gaza last night. According to Palestinian media reports, 400 people, including women and children, lost their lives in last night's bombings, and hundreds more are still trapped under collapsed buildings,' the Afghanistani news portal wrote in the post shared in 2023. — KABUL NEWS (@kabulnewstv) October 23, 2023 Netizens soon noticed the video was old and slammed the journalist for misinformation. An X user wrote, "Bhai jhoot ki b had hoti... nechy community note b zra prhy (There is a limit of telling lies, reach the community note below)." Another user wrote, "Sab kuch fake hain is mulk main (everything is fake in the country)." A third user said, "bhai kyun fake videos laga rahay ho, thora sikh lo (brother, why are you putting out old videos, learn something)." India's Action Against Pakistan India's military strikes, under the codename Operation Sindoor, came two weeks after the Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians were killed in cold blood by terrorists. Sources said over 70 terrorists were killed and more than 60 were wounded in the attack, significantly degrading the operational capability of these groups. After the operation, the Indian army said "justice is served" to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, with New Delhi stressing its actions "have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature". "No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and the method of execution," an official statement said. Indian intelligence has cited clear evidence that the Pakistan Army provided logistical support and safe havens to terrorist groups, and sources said the strikes were aimed at exposing and dismantling this deep-rooted nexus between the military and cross-border terrorism. The targets included Hizbul Mujahideen's facility in Mehmoona Joya in Sialkot, Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Markaz Ahle Hadith in Barnala and its camp in Muzaffarabad's Shawai Nalla. India also struck at Jaish-e-Mohammad's Markaz Abbas facility in Kotli.
