India launches sharp counterattack on US after tariff threat, calls Trump's criticism 'Unreasonable', slams US-EU hypocrisy over…

कनाडा में G7 समिट से इतर प्रधानमंत्री मोदी और अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति ट्रंप की मुलाकात होनी थी. New Delhi: Hours after US President Donald Trump asserted that Washington will substantially raise tariffs on goods from India over its energy ties with Russia, India on Monday launched a sharp counterattack on the United States and the European Union for their 'unjustified and unreasonable' targeting of New Delhi. The Modi government firmly rejected the criticism and pointed out the double standards in targeting it on the issue. New Delhi also said that both the US and the EU are continuing their trade relations with Russia. 'Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. The Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment, the MEA said in a late-evening statement. 'Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals,' it added. 'In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' the MEA said. It said India has been 'targeted' by the US and the EU for importing oil from Russia after the commencement of the Ukraine conflict. In fact, India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict, it said. 'The US at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability,' the MEA said, adding India's imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumers. 'They are a necessity compelled by global market situation. However, it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia,' it said. The MEA noted that the European Union in 2024 had a bilateral trade of Euro 67.5 billion in goods with Russia. 'In addition, it had trade in services estimated at Euro 17.2 billion in 2023. This is significantly more than India's total trade with Russia that year or subsequently. 'European imports of LNG in 2024, in fact, reached a record 16.5mn tonnes, surpassing the last record of 15.21mn tonnes in 2022,' it added. US will substantially raise tariffs on India: Donald Trump Earlier, US President Trump said his administration will substantially raise tariffs on India. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits,' he said in a social media post. 'They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,' he said.

Government pressure on independent media fatal for democracy: Congress on action against Gujarat Samachar

The Congress on Friday (May 16, 2025) flayed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) action against Gujarat Samachar founder, saying anyone raising their voice against the government or not compromising with the BJP will have to go to jail. Bahubali Shah, one of the owners of the leading Gujarati newspaper Gujarat Samachar, was detained by the ED following a raid on their premises. In a post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the government is putting pressure on independent media which is fatal for democracy. मोदी जी ने हाल ही में एक इंटरव्यू में कहा था — "Criticism is the soul of Democracy" गुजरात समाचार एक 93 वर्ष पुरानी संस्था है, जिसके वरिष्ठ संस्थापक, श्री बाहुबली भाई शाह जी को ED से गिरफ़्तार करवाकर मोदी जी ने सिद्ध किया है — Arresting critics is the first sign of a scared… — Mallikarjun Kharge (@kharge) May 16, 2025 Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent interview in which he had said, 'Criticism is the soul of Democracy', Mr. Kharge said by getting the founder of Gujarat Samachar arrested by ED, "Modi ji has proved that arresting critics is the first sign of a scared dictator." "Whoever raises voice against this government and who does not compromise with the BJP, will have to go to jail. The government putting pressure on independent media and using it to its own advantage is fatal for democracy," Mr. Kharge charged. Congress' head of media department Pawan Khera said, 'Late last night the ED arrested Bahubali Bhai Shah of Gujarat Samachar. The 93-year-old newspaper has been a bold anti-establishment voice. This is the fate of those who have the guts to openly say that the emperor is naked.' Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh also said in a post on X, 'We admire the Guts 'Gujarat Samachaar' have always shown over the years. At least there are some people left in Media who have the courage to stand up and do impartial reporting. I am sure it is just 'witch hunting' to harass the owners, ultimately they would come out Clean. We all stand by them,' he also said. He said ED raids were conducted on Gujarat Samachar and GSTV. "Bahubalibhai Shah, 73-year-old director of 'Gujarat Samachar' has been arrested. His only crime was that he was continuously asking questions to the government and fixing their responsibility. BJP government is not used to answers and accountability, so by sending ED, they trampled the rights of the fourth pillar of democracy," he said. Before this, the X handle of 'Gujarat Samachar' was also blocked in India, Mr. Gohil said. "This dictatorial and arbitrary attitude of the Modi government is extremely dangerous for the country, against which we all have to raise our voice unitedly," the Gujarat Congress leader charged in his post. Bahubali Shah is one of the directors of Lok Prakashan Limited, which owns the Gujarat Samachar. His elder brother, Shreyansh Shah, is the managing editor of the daily.

Operation Sindoor: Know Why India Targeted Jaish & Lashkar Camps In Pakistan After Pahalgam Massacre

The Indian Army has been able to launch successful precision attacks on several terror camps of different terrorists within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as retaliation against the fatal Pahalgam attack of April 22 that resulted in 26 casualties. The operation, dubbed 'Operation Sindoor,' struck at main terror infrastructure corresponding to outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Multiple blasts were witnessed at different places in Pakistan and PoK, and videos captured major explosions. Nine terrorist camps were targeted in the operation, according to the Indian Army. The operation was a coordinated multi-domain operation, carried out by the Indian Army, Navy, and the Air Force. No Indian jets were lost in the operation, sources ensured. Sources stated that the primary aim of 'Operation Sindoor' was to eliminate top leaders of Jaish-e-Mohammed, based in Bahawalpur, and Lashkar-e-Taiba, based in Muridke. The operation was planned based on intelligence provided by India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), which supplied the coordinates for the nine key locations targeted. India's National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, reportedly held over 15 high-level meetings to oversee the operation's planning and execution. #BigBreaking | Operation Sindoor Live Updates: पाकिस्तान के आतंकी ठिकानों पर हमला, आर्मी-एयरफोर्स का ऑपरेशन, लश्कर-जैश का हेडक्वार्टर तबाह, PM मोदी ने देखा ऑपरेशन#OperationSindoor #BreakingNews #IndianArmy #ZeeLive @RahulSinhaTV @pratyushkkhare — Zee News (@ZeeNews) May 6, 2025 Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was closely following the operation from his official residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, with minute-to-minute inputs from NSA Doval. After the success of the operation, political leaders and politicians from all over India congratulated the Indian Army, posting graphics with the word 'Operation Sindoor'. A statement issued by the Indian Army said that the operation was aimed at terrorist infrastructure in PoK and Pakistan where plans were being made and coordinated to launch attacks against India. "Our response was focused, calibrated, and non-retaliatory," the statement said. "No Pakistani military installations were hit. India exercised a lot of restraint in target selection." The statement went on further to highlight India's determination to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice. "We have credible evidence pointing towards Pakistan-based terrorists' involvement in this attack," it continued. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decried the missile attacks as an "act of war" and reaffirmed that he would respond suitably. He confirmed that India had mounted attacks under 'Operation Sindoor' in five places in Pakistan.
