BBC viewers astounded at Sue Barker's treatment after legend's Wimbledon return
BBC commentator Andrew Castle and viewers alike were taken aback to see Sue Barker at Wimbledon on Tuesday. Barker was spotted in the Centre Court crowd as Cameron Norrie bowed out to Carlos Alcaraz, dashing British singles hopes.
Having carved her name as a Wimbledon icon by reaching the tournament's semi-finals in her playing days and later becoming synonymous with BBC's coverage, the French Open champ presented for 22 years before bowing out, although she made a comeback for an on-court chat with Andy Murray in his final outing.
Nowadays, Barker graces SW19 on occasion and unexpectedly popped up on Tuesday, much to the surprise of her former co-worker and one-time British No. 1, Castle. The broadcasting legend was not listed amongst the day's VIP guests.
"Is that Sue Barker up there?" Castle enquired of fellow commentator John McEnroe. "Where's Sue? What is she doing up there? I didn't see her on the list," reports the Mirror.
The cameras later zoomed in on Barker during a lull in the action, revealing her location in the members' enclosure instead of the prestigious Royal Box.
"Ah, [she's in a] box. Nearly in the Royal Box," observed Castle. "That's the Royal Box over there. Maybe next time. Member's enclosure. Not bad."
Social media buzz saw some Wimbledon fans questioning why Barker wasn't sitting in the most coveted spot of the grounds. One tweeted via X: "If anybody should be in the Royal box, it's Sue Barker!".
"Disgraceful that Sue Barker isn't in the Royal Box," another fan exclaimed. One social media user believed some strings should have been pulled: "Surely @AndrewCastle63 Tim can get Sue Barker into the royal box with his contacts? She's a Wimbledon legend."
Another commenter speculated on why Barker might have chosen her seat: "Sue Barker keeping her name off the list so Castle can't track her down. Played," they quipped.
Off-camera, tennis icon Billie Jean King had a catch-up with Barker and even shared a snapshot of the two. "Look who I found: the legendary Sue Barker," she posted on X.
"Sue won 15 WTA titles, and then enjoyed an incredible 30-year sports broadcasting career."
Reflecting on her illustrious career as she stepped down from presenting Wimbledon in 2022, the 69 year old had nothing but fond memories of her time in broadcasting.
Barker reflected: "What a wonderful time I've had working on some of the biggest sporting events around the world. I will miss it terribly, but after 30 years I feel the time is right for me."

'In my case, when my junior sister passed away, unexpectedly, this would have been three years ago on June 7. I was in my hotel room. I had to go to work the next day. She officially passed away around 4am. I had two days at work before I was due to go home. 'In my insane mind, I thought I could get through those two days. I really thought I would. It was still very raw in my head and my brain. I came to work, I was subdued, anybody who knows me would tell you I'm lively, full of energy, but I was very subdued, and it was still reeling, what just happened was very raw.' He added: 'I believe I got through the scene, I think I did, someone asked me 'Are you ok?' in my dressing room and of course, I wasn't. They were kind enough to let me go home. Paranormal expert dies on tour with 'possessed' original Annabelle doll
Dan Rivera, 54, suddenly died while hosting a US tour with the doll. A paranormal expert has died while travelling on tour with the original Annabelle doll. Dan Rivera died suddenly following a stop at the New England Society of Psychic Research in Pennsylvania. The 54-year-old had been hosting a US tour with the doll, which inspired the character in the horror film The Conjuring. As reported in the Mirror, lead investigator at the society, Chris Gilloren, announced Dan's death on social media. He wrote: "It's with deep sadness that Tony, Wade, and I share the sudden passing of our close friend and partner, Dan Rivera. We are heartbroken and still processing this loss." In his statement, Chris went on to speak of Rivera's legacy. "Dan truly believed in sharing his experiences and educating people on the paranormal. His kindness and passion touched everyone who knew him. "Thank you for your support and kind thoughts during this difficult time." Rivera's cause of death is yet to be shared publicly. The Adams County Coroner listed it as "pending," according USA Today. According to Adams County dispatch scanner archives, authorities were called to a Gettysburg hotel on July 13. They are said to have responded to a report of a CPR in progress of a 54-year-old man. Just a day before his death, NESPR hosted a showing of the Annabelle doll. The doll is normally kept at the Warrens' Occult Museum in Connecticut, which was created by demonist Ed Warren and trance medium Lorraine Warren. The story of the haunting Annabelle doll story is said to have begun in 1968 when a nursing student was given a Raggedy Ann doll as a gift. NESPR says: "She brings it home where she lives with a roommate. Almost immediately, the roommates noticed strange occurrences with the doll and they were introduced to a medium who told them the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle. The two roommates tried to accept the doll's spirit and please it only to have it reciprocate maliciousness and violent intent." The Warrens were called to investigate the doll, which they removed from the house and encased it in a glass box. As part of the Annabelle doll tour, the NESPR state it has "reportedly brought misfortune, injury, and even death to those who have interacted with it improperly." Rivera had been involved in paranormal research for over a decade before his death. His bio reads: "At an early age he was introduced to haunting phenomena, having witnessed paranormal events occurring in his home." The US Army veteran considered himself to be "an expert in the rites and rituals of Santeria." He was part of the Devils on the Run Tour, hosted by NESPR, as they travelled with the Annabelle doll.
