666 chain-pulling incidents on CRin 20 days, 463 people penalised
Mumbai: Between June 1 and 20, Central Railway (CR) recorded 666 instances of alarm chain pulling across its network -- 251 of which occurred in the Mumbai division alone. As a result, 463 passengers were prosecuted, and a total fine of Rs 1.7 lakh was collected, according to CR's chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila. Each incident caused a minimum delay of five minutes per train. Around 150 trains faced delays ranging from 10 to 15 minutes. This marks a 53% increase compared to the same period last year, which saw 98 such disruptions. "These delays had a cascading impact, affecting multiple subsequent services," Nila said on Sunday. Both mail/express and suburban trains in Mumbai were hard-hit, resulting in inconvenience to thousands of daily commuters. The reasons for chain pulling varied widely -- from accidental triggers and late boarding attempts to dropped mobile phones and other non-critical issues. "We urge passengers not to misuse the alarm chain for trivial reasons, as it causes widespread disruption," Nila said. He reminded the public that unwarranted chain pulling is a punishable offence under Section 141 of the Railways Act. The alarm chain is strictly meant for genuine emergencies like fire, medical situations, or onboard accidents." To reduce such misuse, the railways has advised passengers to reach their boarding stations well in advance and carry manageable luggage. "Facilities like battery-operated cars and wheelchairs are available at most stations to assist senior citizens and differently abled passengers," Nila said.

MSRTC, CR to deploy extra buses & trains to Pandharpur
Nashik: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation ( MSRTC ) has geared up to deploy 300 additional buses for the Pandharpur pilgrimage during Ashadhi Ekadashi July 2-11. Similarly, the Central Railways (CR) also decided to run special trains to assist the pilgrims. "There will be to-and-fro buses to Pandharpur. These will be operated from Nashik, Malegaon, Satana, Kalwan, Manmad, Chandwad, Yeola, Lasalgaon, Pimpalgaon Baswant, Nandgaon, Sinner, Igatpuri, and Peth depots," said an MSRTC officer. The CR also arranged for Ashadi special trains from Nagpur and Bhusawal to Pandharpur. The Nagpur-Miraj special will leave Nagpur at 8.50am on July 4-5 and reach Miraj at 11.55am the next day. In return, train no 01206 will leave Miraj at 12.55 pm on July 5-7 to reach Nagpur at 12.25pm the next day. The New Amravati-Pandharpur special train will leave New Amravati at 2.40pm on July 2-5 to reach Pandharpur at 9.10am the next day. In the return journey, the train will start from Pandharpur at 7.30 pm on July 3 and July 6 to reach New Amravati at 12.50pm the next day. Sangli rly passengers threaten stir on July 5
Kolhapur: Alleging that several demands have not been fulfilled despite repeated initimations, the Sangli Railway Passenger Association and Sangli Zilla Nagrik Jagruti Manch have written to Central Railway (CR) officials, warning them of an agitation to be held at Sangli Railway Station on Ashadi Ekadashi (July 5). Association members alleged that several of their demands related to Sangli, Hatkanangale, Karad, Jat Road and Bhilawadi railway stations are not fulfilled thus the decision to carry out a 'Jan Andolan' against the railway administration. Satish Sakhalkar from Sangli Zilla Nagrik Jagruti Manch said, "As per the letters written to CR general manager on June 6 and June 10, a 15-day ultimatum was given to fulfil our pending demands related to Sangli, Hatkanangale, Kirloskarwadi, Karad, Bhilwadi, Kavthemahankal and Jat Road stations. As the CR hasn't solved any of the demands yet, Sangli Railway Passenger Association, Sangli Zilla Nagrik Jagruti Manch, and other various local organisations, including Varkaris, will carry out a protest on July 5 from 10.30am to 1pm. Our agitation will be held peacefully. If any other person creates chaos or stops the train or pulls the chain of the train, then we won't be responsible for this." The associations want Kolhapur-Pune Vande Bharat Express to be given a halt at Hatkanangale station, the Hubli-Pune Vande Bharat Express to be stopped at Karad and Kirloskarwadi stations and the Nizamuddin-Yeswantpur Sampark Kranti to be stopped at Sangli. Among other demands are the Kolhapur-Miraj DEMU passenger train to be extended up to Kirloskarwadi, the Kolhapur-Pune special train (Sahyadri Express) to be extended up to Mumbai CSMT and the Kolhapur-Kalburgi Express and Kolhapur-Nagpur Express to be given a halt at Kavathemahankal and Jat Road.

Proximity between 2 trains, track curvature among reasons for Mumbra accident: Preliminary probe
The preliminary probe into the June 9 train accident near Mumbra in Thane, where five commuters were killed, indicates that proximity between the trains and horizontal movement due to track curvature were among the reasons for the mishap. A five-member probe panel comprising Central Railway (CR) officials has also found that a 0.75 metre gap between passengers standing on the footboards of the two local trains moving in opposite directions—Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Karjat and Kasara to CSMT—was one of the major reasons for the accident. The two trains were moving at a speed of around 75 kmph each, resulting in a total relative speed of 150 kmph at the time of crossing. The inquiry committee, comprising senior CR officers from the safety, security, operations, electrical and engineering wings, has to file its final report within a week. The investigating officials believe that the accident was triggered by a passenger on the CSMT-Kasara Fast local losing his balance and falling. While the reason for his fall is yet to be determined, the man was carrying a shoulder travel bag that may have led to him going off balance, the officials suspect. When the man fell, a Government Railway Police (GRP) constable standing behind him also fell. The duo hit passengers on the other train moving in the opposite direction, resulting in six commuters falling onto the tracks. According to officials, the entire incident took place within seconds. 'The bag carried by the man who fell left a perceptible black mark on one of the coaches of the Kasara-CSMT local. This shows physical contact at the time of passing,' a CR official said. Though the distance between the train coaches was in the usual range of 1.8 to 2 metres, that between the passengers on the footboards of both trains was only 0.75 metres when they crossed each other, the probe panel has found. Officials said that the CSMT-bound train had several office commuters packed into it, while the Kasara-bound train was comparatively less crowded. No technical fault has been identified in either train, officials added. More than two weeks after the tragedy, the Central Railway has still not determined the exact reason why the commuter slipped. While the CCTV cameras at Mumbra railway station recorded both trains entering and exiting the station, they did not cover the central section of the tracks where the passengers slipped.

Mumbai: A mere 0.75-metre gap between commuters hanging by the footboard on two suburban trains running in opposite directions at 75 kmph—a relative speed of 150kmph—and the track curvature that caused the trains to oscillate sideways led to eight commuters falling on the railway tracks in Mumbra on June 9, of which five died. These are the preliminary findings of a five-member inquiry committee set up by Central Railway (CR) to investigate the incident, according to officials. Thane, India. 'Prima facie, it seems that the hand of the said commuter, who was carrying a shoulder bag, was hanging outside the coach since he was on the footboard,' said a CR official, requesting anonymity. 'It seems that as the train was passing Mumbra, he somehow fell from the footboard, taking another passenger—a GRP (Government Railway Police) cop—standing behind him down with him. There is no understanding on how he fell.' Before he fell, the man with the shoulder bag was apparently flung onto the adjacent CSMT-bound fast local and hit a few passengers standing on the footboard of that train, the official said. Six passengers from the Kasara-CSMT local fell on the tracks. 'The entire episode unfolded in a matter of a second or two,' said the official, adding that the bag of the commuter on the Karjat-bound train left a black gash on one of the coaches of the Kasara-CSMT local. The distance of 0.75 metres between commuters on the two crossing trains assumes significance, said officials, since the distance between the coaches was 1.8-2 metres, which is as per norms. While the Kasara-CSMT fast local was overcrowded with office-going commuters during the morning rush hour, the Karjat-bound train was not packed, officials said. Over two weeks since the incident, which also left nine commuters injured, CR authorities are finding it hard to piece together the series of events, including the reason behind the man with the shoulder bag falling off the footboard. CCTV cameras installed at the Mumbra station, where the collision occurred, shows the two trains but does not cover the portion at the centre of the two rail lines where commuters fell off. The inquiry committee, consisting of senior CR officers from the security, safety, operations, engineering and electrical departments, will submit a final report within a week.
