Speaker Appavu backs actor Kamal Haasan in ‘Kannada came form Tamil' row

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu has backed actor Kamal Haasan, who had asserted recently that 'Kannada came from Tamil'. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday after participating in a function, Mr. Appavu said the people of then Madras Presidency, which comprised Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, Karnataka and a part of Orissa spoke Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Tulu and Oriya and it was propagated then that Tamil and all other south Indian languages were born from Sanskrit. However, this longstanding myth was smashed by Bishop Caldwell of Northern Ireland, who learnt all the south Indian languages and even Sanskrit and researched about these languages for 18 years. In his book 'A comparative grammar of Dravidian or South Indian Family of Languages' in 1856, Bishop Caldwell, who obtained a degree in a university in Ireland, had declared that Tamil was one among the first three languages of the world. 'In his book, Bishop Caldwell, after 18-year-long research and learning 18 languages, has written that Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tulu, Oriya etc. were born from Tamil. Hence, ancient Tamil obtained classical status thanks to the efforts taken by late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. And, a statue was erected for Bishop Caldwell in Chennai and a memorial has been created for the late scholar. So, what Kamal Haasan said in this connection is right,' Mr. Appavu said. The Speaker said the accused in the Anna University sexual assault case had been convicted within the shortest possible time only due to the sincere efforts taken by the Tamil Nadu Government to expedite the trial of the case. 'Justice has been done to the victims of infamous Pollachi sexual assault case only after the present Government expedited the trial of the case. Now, the the accused in the Anna University sexual assault case has been found guilty. Everyone expects that the accused would get maximum punishment for this heinous crime. This has instilled confidence in the minds of the women, girls and the minors that they would get justice under the present government,' Mr. Appavu said.

Longhorns to host Julian Caldwell for official visit

When the calendar flips to June, the Texas Longhorns will be busy welcoming recruits to campus for visits. That list now includes Julian Caldwell. The four-star wide receiver will be on campus June first. It will be the first trip of what is expected to be a busy month for Caldwell. After his stop in Austin, Caldwell will visit with the SMU Mustangs on June 2. He is then scheduled to meet with LSU on June 12 and Oregon on June 18th. The heavy interest in Caldwell is no surprise. He is ranked as the No. 9 wideout in the 2027 class and is the No. 11 ranked prospect in Texas, according to On3. Advertisement During his sophomore campaign, Caldwell hauled in 21 receptions for 581 yards and found the end zone seven times. With him as a vocal part of the offense, Argyle High School made it to the 2024 UIL Texas Football State Championship semifinals in conference 5A D2. If the Longhorns can land Caldwell, he would join a program that has been a wide receiver factory. Over the last two years, the Longhorns have developed Xavier Worth and Matthew Golden into NFL Draft picks. They are also set to welcome back Ryan Wingo, who has shown flashes of promise in his college career. Caldwell has the potential to be the next success story. The Longhorns' only commitment in the 2027 class is four-star linebacker Taven Epps. Adding Caldwell would give Dia Bell or Arch Manning a weapon to rely on. Caldwell's decision is still months away, and the Longhorns 2027 class will look very different. Advertisement With recruiting season far from over, Caldwell still has many options to consider. However, it is a good sign for the Longhorns that he is visiting campus. It will be a chance for Steve Sarkisian to show Caldwell what his future holds if he decides to join the Longhorns. Brave Bombers fightback falls short in Lions' den

Brisbane have held off an undermanned Essendon to avoid another Gabba meltdown in an 18-point AFL win. The Lions led by 32 points and were humming before the Bombers, behind an immense third quarter from Jye Caldwell, surged back to lead in the final term. Defending champions Brisbane avoided a repeat of their shock loss to Melbourne at the venue a fortnight ago though, escaping 13.12 (90) to 11.6 (72) on Thursday night. It improved them to 9-2-1, Hugh McCluggage (career-high 41 disposals, 12 score involvements) starring again as Kai Lohmann (three goals) had his best game of an injury-marred season. The Bombers came without injured trio Ben McKay, Zach Reid and Kyle Langford, debutant Zak Johnson and youngsters Archer Day-Wicks and Elijah Tsatas filling the void. Nic Martin (29 disposals) kicked two brilliant goals while Caldwell (30 touches) had 18 disposals, seven clearances, one goal and a goal assist in the third quarter alone. Lohmann launches from the centre square 💥#AFLLionsDons — AFL (@AFL) May 29, 2025 As they did against Melbourne a fortnight ago, the Lions started fluidly and tore through the middle of the Gabba at their leisure. A 6.3 first term was built on punishment of every Bombers turnover as the Lions queued for goals. Six consecutive behinds followed in the second term though, the hosts butchering chances that gave the Bombers life just as it did the Demons in their shock comeback win earlier this month. Peter Wright kicked the first two of the quarter before Sam Durham, back on the ground after a nasty-looking ankle roll, added another. Logan Morris stopped the rot for the Lions with a 45-metre snap but the Bombers kept coming in a show-stopping third term. Nate Caddy was influential in the air at both ends, his goal followed by a Caldwell major out of a stoppage a part of his prolific term. Caddy should have had another but missed when he played on, Martin then nailing a second goal from the same pocket to make it a five-point game. Scores were level when Caddy snapped a brilliant goal back over his head, before a pair of Lions majors gave them a 12-point buffer at the final break. NATE CADDY KICKED IT OVER HIS HEAD 🤯#AFLLionsDons — AFL (@AFL) May 29, 2025 That was eroded inside three minutes though, Jade Gresham snapping truly and Todd Goldstein finding space from a clever squaring assist. They hit the front for the first time with a behind before Morris put Brisbane back in front and Lohmann skipped through another from 50 metres into an open goal. Noah Answerth was the unlikely match-sealer, the defender's long-range goal with three minutes remaining icing the contest.

Annual Moving Day Reminder For Southern Dairy Farmers

Press Release – Otago Regional Council Otago Regional Councils Manager Environmental Implementation Libby Caldwell says effluent from stock trucks can put road users and adjacent waterways at risk. Southern dairy farmers are being reminded to incorporate best practices to safeguard water quality and stock transport safety when the annual stock Moving Day begins this weekend on Sunday, 1 June. Moving Day continues for several weeks after 1 June, a tradition where dairy farmers move their cows between farm properties around Otago, either herded along roads or more often by stock truck transit. Otago Regional Council's Manager Environmental Implementation Libby Caldwell says effluent from stock trucks can put road users and adjacent waterways at risk. She emphasised farmers should stand off their animals, for at least 4 to 12 hours, before transporting them. 'The focus is on farmers' standing their stock the day before moving, and for the trucking companies to then make use of the roadside effluent disposal sites around Otago,' Mrs Caldwell says. Effluent can get onto roads and become a safety hazard for other drivers and can also run off into roadside drains or pollute adjacent waterways, she says. The ORC and several local authorities now operate nine roadside effluent disposal sites across Otago, with six disposal sites on State Highway 1 between Pukeuri and Clinton, and three on inland highways, at Raes Junction, Brassknocker Rd and Tarras. Roadside stock effluent disposal sites around Otago Farmers walking their herd along a road should keep them away from roadside drains and channels, and avoid disturbed soil, to stop effluent entering adjacent waterways. Standing off green feed Cows should be stood off green feed for at least four hours, but no more than 12 hours, before they are loaded onto trucks, which helps reduce the amount of effluent on trucks. For welfare reasons, DairyNZ also recommends that a grazed-out paddock or stand-off pads are better options for standing stock, than a concrete surface, as the latter can contribute to tender feet and are not good for stock to lie down on. For general enquiries, contact the ORC's Environmental Implementation Team Catchment Advisors on 0800 474 082, or email them at catchments@
