Microsoft makes OpenAI's new open model available on Windows

Ammon News - OpenAI released a new free and open GPT model yesterday that can run on a PC, and now Microsoft is making that easy to do for Windows users. The lightweight gpt-oss-20b model is now available on Windows AI Foundry, and will be coming soon to macOS, too. You'll need a PC or laptop with at least 16GB of VRAM, so you'll need one of the top GPUs from Nvidia or the variety of Radeon GPUs with sufficient VRAM. The gpt-oss-20b model is optimized for code execution and tool use, and Microsoft says it's 'perfect for building autonomous assistants or embedding AI into real-world workflows, even in bandwidth-constrained environments.' Microsoft has pre-optimized gpt-oss-20b for local inference, and it hints that support for more devices is coming soon. That could mean we see a more optimized version for Copilot Plus PCs at some point in the future, much like how Microsoft has been adding a variety of local AI models to Windows recently. Microsoft's speedy addition of OpenAI's latest model to the Windows AI Foundry comes as Amazon was equally quick to adopt the new open-weight GPT-OSS models for its cloud services. It's the first time you can run an OpenAI model locally on Windows, but it's also the first time Microsoft's biggest cloud competitor has had access to the latest OpenAI models — adding another dynamic to the complicated OpenAI and Microsoft partnership. Brave and AdGuard join Signal in blocking Microsoft's Recall feature

Microsoft's controversial Recall feature in Windows 11 that takes automatic screenshots on Copilot Plus PCs is facing growing criticism from privacy-focused app developers. According to a report by The Verge, both Brave and AdGuard have now joined messaging app Signal in blocking the Windows AI-powered feature. Following the lead of messaging app Signal, both Brave and AdGuard have now taken steps to block the AI-powered tool from accessing user content, citing serious privacy risks. AdGuard, an ad-blocking and privacy tool, shared its reasoning in a recent blog post, calling Recall a privacy concern. The post stated, 'The very idea of background screen captures is unsettling. At any given moment, the system could snap a screenshot of a private chat window, an online form where you're entering your credit card, or simply something personal you didn't want saved.' Brave web browser also confirmed that it will block Recall by default on Windows 11 and newer systems. 'Starting in version 1.81 for Windows users, Brave browser will block Microsoft Recall from automatically taking screenshots of your browsing activity,' said the company in a blog post. They further stated that it will disable it by default for Windows 11+ users, but they will also provide an option to turn it back on for users who want Recall. Brave also noted that they were partly inspired by Signal's blocking of Recall. Signal Desktop now includes a 'Screen security' setting to block screenshots on Windows, aimed at protecting chats from Microsoft's Recall feature. Messaging app Signal began blocking Recall in May using a Digital Rights Management (DRM) flag that prevents screenshots and accessibility tools from capturing its content. The messaging app also criticised Microsoft for not offering fine-tuned settings to let developers manage how Recall interacts with their apps. 'Microsoft has launched Recall without granular settings for app developers that would enable Signal to easily protect privacy, which is a glaring omission that limits our choices,' Signal noted. However, Brave was able to restrict Recall without blocking all screenshot and accessibility functions. Microsoft allows browsers to selectively disable Recall, and Brave hopes this level of control is extended to all types of applications. 'While it's heartening that Microsoft recognises that Web browsers are especially privacy-sensitive applications, we hope they offer the same granular ability to turn off Recall to all privacy-minded application developers,' Brave said.

Microsoft's new Intel-powered Surface Laptop 5G arrives in August

is a senior editor and author of Notepad , who has been covering all things Microsoft, PC, and tech for over 20 years. Microsoft announced a new 5G version of its Surface Laptop today, which will start shipping on August 26th starting at $1,799.99. The Surface Laptop 5G is powered by Intel's Core Ultra Series 2 processors, complete with an NPU capable of providing access to Microsoft's latest Copilot Plus AI features. The Surface Laptop 5G is very similar to the existing 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7 model, except Microsoft has made some internal changes to accommodate a 5G modem and support for a physical nano SIM on the side of the laptop, as well as eSIMs. The base Surface Laptop 5G will be priced at $1,799, and ship with an Intel Core Ultra 5, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The top of the range model will be priced at $2,699, and ship with Intel's Core Ultra 7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. All models will ship in the Surface platinum silver color. Microsoft says it hasn't just dropped a modem into its Surface Laptop 5G, as the company has built a special antenna system that's not hidden away in the base of the device. 'At the heart of Surface Laptop 5G is a dynamic antenna system that continuously adapts to its environment,' explains Nancie Gaskill, general manager of the Surface business. This system uses six antennas that automatically adjust depending on how the laptop is being held or used. The nano SIM slot on the Surface Laptop 5G sits beside the Surface Connect charging port. Image: Microsoft 'This design required a new material, one that allows radio signals to pass through without impacting performance, while still delivering the durability, premium feel and lightness our customers are looking for,' Gaskill says. 'We developed a custom multi-layered laminate that meets all of these needs, enabling reliable 5G performance without compromising portability or design.' Microsoft has tested its 5G hardware with more than 100 mobile operators across 50-plus countries. The 5G support will allow this laptop to always be connected while on the go and also to act as a 5G mobile hotspot to share its connection with devices over Wi-Fi. The Surface Laptop 5G is designed primarily for businesses, which will also get access to the latest Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch models starting today.

Copilot For Your PCs: Microsoft Will Soon Bring AI Features For Desktop Users

Last Updated: Microsoft is going big on AI for Copilot laptops and soon we will see these features coming to desktop PCs thanks to Intel and other chip giants. The Windows AI ambitions could get a big push later this year as Microsoft plans to bring Copilot features to the desktop PC range. The company has worked hard to make AI laptops available in the market over the last few years and with the Windows 10 support deadline nearing, it needs more hardware to tempt people to invest and upgrade to the latest versions. We have seen the Snapdragon X and AMD processors offering AI Copilot features to a more manageable range of around Rs 65,000 but desktop upgrades will undoubtedly give more people to improve their systems with AI and not invest really big. Intel already has launched new processors with NPU but their limitations mean you cannot run Copilot AI features on the desktop. But new reports suggest the chip maker is readying a new version of the Arrow Lake processor that will support advanced NPU to make it compatible for Copilot Plus features. It might be important for Intel and Microsoft to diversify its AI offerings, and eventually make it available on gaming-powered machines, the ZDNet Korea edition has been quoted saying. Speaking of which, the AI laptop models are lacking the power that heavy users demand, and the price tag of the AI laptops/PC and mini PCs have to come down, if the industry wants to push the growth levels beyond the meager single digit figures in the next few years. We have tested a few of these AI laptops and seen its obvious benefits, at least with longer battery life than the previous versions. But desktops don't need those improvements, so it will be interesting to see how Intel plans to make it worthwhile for people to invest in the Core Ultra processor with a dose of Copilot Plus AI features on the big machines. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 13:01 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
