Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's ‘underrated' thriller now streaming
An underrated crime film from over 10 years ago starring two of Hollywood's biggest stars is currently streaming Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's forgotten team-up from 2013 has just been added to Prime Video. The A-list Hollywood duo are best known for portraying love interests in the romantic-comedy Crazy Stupid Love and the Oscar-winning musical La La Land. However, they co-starred together in between these two hits in a wildly different film that's been all but forgotten. Helmed by Venom and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, Gangster Squad received middling reviews when it was first released and was not a huge hit amongst movie buffs. Gosling stars as Sergeant Jerry Wooters, a WWII veteran tasked with bringing down Los Angeles mob leader Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn), along with fellow cop Sergeant John O'Mara (Josh Brolin). Stone features in the film as Grace Faraday, an etiquette teacher close to Cohen who eventually falls for Jerry in this glossy send-up of hard-boiled noir thrillers. While Gangster Squad didn't capture audiences' imaginations as much as their other two collaborations, Gosling and Stone fans should definitely take this opportunity to give it another go now it's on Prime Video. Plenty of fans have reassessed the film as an underrated gem, with a Letterboxd reviewer saying: 'Definitely underrated as a movie and I definitely didn't expect it to get such bad reviews on several famous platforms... 'Although its script and plot were nothing out of the ordinary and original the film's vibes and noir genre were definitely what I loved about it!' Another wrote: 'This one smashed it out of the park for me. I had low expectations going in but came out very pleasantly surprised and to be honest, pretty damn impressed. 'Great cast, superb production design, fantastic shootouts and overall, really well made and hugely enjoyable. I loved it.' Get 30 days of Prime Video totally free £8.99 £0 Amazon Get Prime Video here Product Description And someone else asked: 'What did this movie ever do to you guys to receive all bad ratings?' The film received a similar appraisal from a recent Reddit post, as a moviegoer argued: 'Gangster Squad (2013) is actually pretty good. 'This one really surprised me... And just to clarify right off of the bat, I'm not saying I think it deserved any Oscars or anything, but it's way more fun than I was expecting the gangster-movie from the director of Zombieland, Venom, and Uncharted to be... (man, Ruben Fleischer has an odd filmography.)' There are also scores of five-star Google reviews for the film, including one calling it 'CRIMINALLY UNDERATED'. 'This is the modern day untouchables,' it continued. '1940s LA is such a beautiful setting. The writing for the characters is great. 'A true sense of brotherhood. Sean Penn portrays a terrifying Mickey Cohen. The action is top notch.' Don't let Gangster Squad fall off your radar if you've not yet checked out Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's most misunderstood cinematic team-up.

Cheryl's ex Jean Bernard Fernandez-Versini now as he shares strange photo of her
Cheryl's ex-husband, Jean Bernard Fernandez-Versini, shared a bizarre photo of the Crazy Stupid Love star on Instagram on the weekend nine years after they split Former pop princess Cheryl and Jean Bernard Fernandez-Versini had only been dating for three months before the French restauranteur popped the question. After her doomed first marriage to Ashley Cole ended in divorce, Cheryl met Jean Bernard - who she affectionately called JB - in Cannes when she was working as a brand ambassador for L'Oreal and he was running a pop-up club. The pair got hitched in an intimate ceremony in Mustique before a second lavish bash in London in 2014. However, their whirlwind romance wasn't to last and ended in another divorce for Chezza in 2016. JB, 44, has kept a relatively low profile since the split, but sent fans of the former couple into a frenzy at the weekend when he posted a throwback snap of the pair together in which Cheryl, 41, sports a lemon yellow frock and black leather over-the-knee peep-toe boots. Tagging the snap: "Where is this jacket?" in reference to his striking midnight blue bomber, JB confused his followers with his photo - posted almost a decade after the divorce. But where is the flamboyant Frenchman now and why, exactly, did he call it quits with his Fight For This Love star, wife? Why did Cheryl split with Jean Bernard Fernadez-Versini? Just 18 months after their marriage, Cheryl and JB split were granted a divorce in October 2016 during a hearing that lasted 14 seconds. Neither Cheryl or Jean-Bernard attended. A statement issued by the singer's representative said: ' Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini have today obtained Decree Nisi in their divorce proceedings. No further comment will be made and they ask for their privacy to be respected.' It was confirmed at the time that Cheryl would keep her 322million net worth and that Jean-Bernard had signed a non-disclosure agreement and therefore he won't be able to speak publicly about their marriage. 'Unreasonable behaviour' However, Cheryl cited 'unreasonable behaviour' for the split and claimed in her divorce papers that JB's actions actions had caused her stress and weight loss. Hitting back at one social media user who labelled her 'a bag of bones' shortly before the divorce, the former X Factor judge appeared to blame her weight loss on the death of her father-in-law. Writing on Instagram at the time, she said: "You have no idea what I have been through. Just loosing (sic) my father in law v recently and everything that comes with that. Not that I am or should justify myself to anyone.' "But I am so sick of people thinking it's OK to be mean or body shame anyone. And it's always woman on woman. Have some respect and maybe think there may be reasons why before opening your mouth please." JB's 'jealousy' JB was also reportedly consumed by jealousy and 'hated' Cheryl speaking to other men. According to The Sun On Sunday Cheryl has "had enough of JB's jealousy. "He didn't like it when she spent time with other men and even became jealous when she was hanging out with her dogs." But JB appeared to poke fun at these claims as he posted a picture of a pooch on Instagram. He captioned the snap of the dog with "Really!!" and a number of crying laughing face emojis. Can't speak French At the beginning of their relationship Cheryl maintained she was learning French to be able to speak to her husband in his native tongue. Her progress is thought to have slowed down due to work commitments but she has said she understands a lot more of the language than she can speak. However, Cheryl's cousin Tony Tweedy fuelled split allegations, claiming the singer and her husband had been struggling with the language barrier, as she speaks little French and he knows only a small amount of English. He told outlet: "Cheryl can't speak French. I'm told he speaks little English. What sort of relationship is it if she cannot speak French and he can't speak English? They may as well have a threesome with the interpreter." Meanwhile, another insider claimed Cheryl realised she had "married too soon" as they added: "Over time it became clear to each of them that they were very different people and from very different worlds." Where is JB now? Since their marriage has ended, JB has stayed out of the public eye, but does regularly post on social media. He currently has a podcast called Humans Of Finance Podcast, which is said to 'explore the captivating stories and insights of the brilliant minds that shape the world of Real Estate Finance in the UK and Europe'. He also shares pictures from his many holidays throughout the year. Last summer, he enjoyed all Cannes, Monaco, St. Tropez, Tuscany and Mykonos had to offer. Most recently, JB has been sunning himself in Dubai from where he shared a slew of snaps of himself wining and dining and posing in his swimming trunks.

Julianne Moore reveals dark reason shows like Sirens and White Lotus are made
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video As Julianne Moore stars in Netflix's new dark comedy Sirens, she poses that our fascination with the mega-rich is due to 'tremendous income inequality'. The new 'seductive' five-episode series follows three very different women – the lavishly rich philanthropist Michaela Kell (Julianne), her assistant and mentee Simone DeWitt (Milly Alcock) and Simone's sister Devon (Meghann Fahy), whose life is in a downward spiral. After Simone and Devon's father Bruce (Bill Camp) is diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Devon embarks on a journey to Michaela's luxury island to confront her absent sister and stumbles into a world with far more nefarious undertones. The Molly Smith-created series, also starring Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton, and has been sold as the 'incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class'. The cult-like aesthetic and critique of the wealthy through the medium of dark comedy seems to be an increasingly explored area of TV, not least in the recent HBO phenomenon The White Lotus. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. And Julianne, 64, thinks she has put her finger on exactly why, as she tells Metro. 'We're living in a time of tremendous income inequality, and it's baffling to us. It's certainly not something that I grew up with. 'When I grew up as a kid in the US, it was that it felt like was possible to live a solid, middle-class life. There were a lot of us who had the same access to housing and education, and health care. 'I think recently, and it's happened globally too. There's been this great disparity where so few of the population has so much of the wealth. 'Rightly so, people are intrigued and baffled and confused about why there should be this vast separation. So I think that's why we have suddenly this plethora of shows that are investigating what this is [about],' the Hollywood actor explained. Her character, Michaela, is an animal activist married to old money tycoon Peter Kell (Kevin) who is 'not quite who she seems' when you first meet her. 'I was also really attracted the idea of playing someone whose identity and inner emotional life would slowly be revealed over the course of five episodes,' she explained. And her turbulent dynamic with Peter was made all the easier to flesh out thanks her and Kevin's historic working relationship after they both starred in Crazy Stupid Love. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I was so delighted that he was going to do this, because when you work with someone you automatically… have shorthand, and it's easy for you to re-engage. 'He's a joy to be around. He's such a such a wonderful actor and a really, really wonderful person.' She added that it was 'interesting' to portray a couple at a 'precarious point in their relationship' which is not always something you come across. At the heart of this show, however, is the relationship between these three women who are pushing and pulling against one another in a bid to achieve their conflicting goals. And we especially see the unhealthily co-dependent relationship Michaela and Simone have forged during their time together. Julianne praised her House of the Dragon co-star as 'extraordinary' and someone who quickly mastered the American accent. For Milly, her experience working with Julianne proved invaluable and their dynamic in real-life naturally translated to the screen. Milly explained: 'I just used my own position of being a younger, less experienced actor who is enamored and inspired by this woman who's obviously very capable and has the career that I want, and is very talented. 'Then as their relationship changes and shifts, Julie is just such an open and accessible actor and person in general so I didn't feel that I had to reach, I felt that she was always there and she was always willing to play.' And was inspired to see the 'good standard' that Julianne set while filming. 'She was someone who just set a very good standard in always being a team player and always being there to play and to serve the story and not to be self-serving,' she reflected. This powerful atmosphere was only bolstered by the fact that not only was the show led by three nuanced female characters, but the crew was also filled to the brim with female talent. 'All of our directors [such as Nicole Cassell] were women. All of our first ADs were women. And it just made the process and environment of going to work every day something very different to what I was used to,' the 25-year-old screenstar said. 'I've been fortunate to work with a lot of female directors, but to work with like a fully female team in front and behind the camera, just made it such a welcoming environment. We could ask questions and things would change, or things would be incorporated, and they would listen.' She pointed to the pink megaphone Simone uses to boss everyone around with in the first episode which came about thanks to her suggestion. 'I went up to Molly, and I was like, 'I think it would be really funny if she didn't yell [but] she had a little pink megaphone.' Things like that… it was such a joy,' she recalled. As for her connection with her character, it was definitely 'the most different character [she's] played' from herself. 'You can be like: 'I don't really understand that set of circumstances but I understand the feeling of being outcasted and needing to prove and needing to perform and needing to be perfect.' So I could relate to that,' she said. One thing she couldn't relate to, however, was the sibling dynamic between Simone and Devon. 'Me and Meghann both don't have sisters so we would go talk to Molly like 'how do sisters behave with one another?' and we found it with each other. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'There's one scene at the end in episode five that was very, very difficult to shoot because I think it was mine and Meghann's last day together. We didn't have to act. We were both just so choked up about it,' she teased. Milly was not the only person who tried to bring a personal nuance to the script. Bill brought 'tremendous curiosity' and research when approaching Bruce's diagnosis. 'It's so individual as to how it manifests itself in that particular person. So I took what Molly had written and applied some of my own experience with friends and family that and [what] I observed when visiting people with that condition at different levels, because it's a progressive thing,' the Presumed Innocent star said. 'I can remember having a conversation with Felix, actually, in one particular scene where I was a little that I was moving into a realm that I shouldn't be. And all he said was, 'be honest' and that is always, always, always gonna work.' More Trending And Felix Solis, who played Jose – the manager of Cliff House – spoke about how impactful Bruce's early-onset dementia storyline was for him, as someone whose mother experienced the disease. 'The magically beautiful irony of it is that the ailment which Bill was portraying is one that actually triggers the person's curiosity. They ask a lot of questions, because my mother passed of that ailment that Bill played, and she was so curious and asked so many questions throughout the progression of the disease. 'It's just magically ironic that that is actually what he was doing as well.' View More » Sirens is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? We tried Gap's new collection. These are the hits and misses
When Anne Hathaway wore a floor-skimming white shirt dress to a Bulgari event last year, it had an almost internet-breaking effect. Not only because the actor proved the surprising red-carpet appeal of cotton poplin, but because her dress was from Gap. It was custom-designed by New York designer Zac Posen, who became the brand's creative director in 2024. When a version of the piece later became available to buy from Gap for £120, it swiftly sold out. Now, it's back (in beige and navy polka-dot as well as white) as part of Posen's first collection for the newly launched GapStudio, which also features denim pieces, khaki tailoring and a new take on the brand's ubiquitous logo sweatshirt. The collection is intended as an elevated take on Gap classics, but it's also a bid to restore some style credit to the erstwhile fashion favourite. It can be easy to forget quite how cool Gap was in its heyday. The first store opened in San Francisco in 1969, and the brand arrived in the UK in 1987. By the Nineties, it had achieved front-page appeal; for US Vogue's 100th anniversary cover in 1992, supermodels including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer wore Gap shirts and jeans. In 1996, Sharon Stone wore a Gap T-shirt (paired with a Valentino skirt and Armani tuxedo dress worn as a jacket) to the Oscars. Influential advert campaigns starred everyone from a young Scarlett Johansson in 2001 to Sarah Jessica Parker at the height of her Carrie Bradshaw powers in 2004. But before long it faded to something decidedly blander. By 2011, it was used as a hallmark of sartorial indifference in the romcom Crazy Stupid Love, in which Ryan Gosling's character memorably tells his protégé Steve Carell to 'be better than the Gap'. In 2021, plummeting sales exacerbated by the pandemic led to the closure of all 81 of its stores in the UK and Ireland, a victim that followed the likes of Warehouse, Oasis and Topshop (which also teased a comeback earlier this year). Since then, Gap has already had a renaissance of sorts. It re-entered the British high street in 2022, and can now be found at 'shop-in-shops' and concessions within selected Next stores, as well as on As well as Hathaway's moment, A-listers including Demi Moore, Cynthia Erivo and Timothée Chalamet have worn Gap on the red carpet recently. But can Posen's new collection cement it as cool once again? Acting deputy fashion director Tamara Abraham and I got our hands on a few hero pieces from the collection to find out. Hit The GapStudio Poplin Maxi Shirt Dress, £120 From the pieces we tried, a clear winner for both of us was the Poplin Maxi Shirt Dress, £120. It feels floaty and sunshine-ready, with flattering pleats on either side of the bust and waist. The beige version I tried immediately struck me as a throw-on-and-go piece, which would be just as good in the office with flats as by the sea with sandals (a girl can dream). Tamara tried the white version, which looked great but is very see-through; to get around this, she kept her trousers on underneath, in a surprisingly wearable take on a tricky trend. Poplin maxi shirt dress, £120, GAP Miss The GapStudio Sailor Trousers, £120 I then tried the khaki version of a pair of Sailor Trousers, £120, which also come in a mid-wash blue denim. They have a pleasing thickness that makes them feel high-quality and a high-waist that, to me, feels flattering. They're a touch too wide, however, and a little too on the nose of the nautical theme, billowing violently in the April breeze. Another thing to note is that the trousers come up long – I'm 5ft 10in and they were just right, but they would have been too long on Tamara who is 5ft 4in. Across the board, the sizing (we both tried UK size 10s) was also generous. High rise twill sailor pants, £120, GAP Miss The GapStudio Cropped Shirt, £70 Finally, Tamara tried the Cropped Shirt, £70, which comes in both white and white-and-blue stripes. We both liked the look of the latter when it dropped on The Telegraph fashion desk, but on reflection it feels like it misses the mark. Tamara didn't find it flattering, commenting that unless you've got abs you want to expose, the hem blurs into whatever trousers or skirt you're wearing with it. And in any case, it's unclear where exactly would be the right setting for the waist-exposing style. Cropped shirt, £70, GAP Perhaps Gap is trying to appeal to the Gen-Z customer, who have less experience of the brand than those of us who wore it the first time around. But doesn't Posen realise they've swapped the immoderately buttoned 'office siren' look for Steve Jobs-inspired office uniforms now anyway? Some of the pieces feel fresh and high-quality, but too many - a puff-ball mini skirt and polka-dot halterneck bralette as well as the cropped shirt - are trying to appeal to younger generations who likely won't be bothered. 'I love the idea of a Gap comeback,' says stylist Anna Berkeley, who believes renewed success lies in its ability to establish a covetable signature. 'It's simple: brands need to ask the customer what they need and listen to what women really want. It's a tough market if you're doing basics and denim – the ready-to-wear market is so saturated.' For now, it's hard to see what the signature will be once the Hathaway hype has passed. Admittedly, there are some items we didn't get to try that I'd be interested to see in real life, including the denim version of the wide-leg trousers and a silky slip-style dress that comes in various colours, including a pretty champagne hue. While we can't yet speak for those, we can confirm that Posen's shirt dress is deserving of the considerable cool credit it has attracted.
