Stick to trusted news sources: Bernama boss

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Musa (right) receiving a souvenir from Wong. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman on Tuesday received a courtesy call from Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai at Istana Seri Kinabalu, here. Wong's visit, which was his first since Musa took office as the 11th Governor of Sabah in January, was also accompanied by Bernama Sabah Bureau Chief Fadzli Ramli, journalist Noorazlina Jindeh and photographer Zamain Singkui. The 40-minute meeting was conducted in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Wong said discussions with the Governor focused on the role of government media agencies in combating the spread of fake news, particularly on social media. The meeting also touched on the exchange of views and ideas, as well as current issues in Sabah, and how to enhance news coverage to counter misinformation more effectively. 'As government media, agencies like Bernama, RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) and the Department of Information (Japen) must work to improve the quality of news coverage in Sabah, especially as the State continues to face a wide range of issues - political, social, developmental and economic,' he said. Wong stressed that it is vital for government media to provide accurate and trustworthy information, especially in the face of misinformation and politically charged narratives that often circulate online. 'As a government news agency, Bernama - along with RTM - must ensure that the information we deliver is factual and responsible, as social media is often flooded with inaccurate and misleading stories,' he added, reiterating that official media outlets remain reliable sources of information. Musa, a former Chief Minister, was sworn in as the State's Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who served four terms from Jan 1, 2011, until his tenure ended on Dec 31, 2024. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 15,000ha in Sipitang approved for village settlements

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: Dr Yusoff said this is the Chief Minister's intention to listen to and fulfil the wishes of rural residents in need of land. SIPITANG: A total of 15,000 hectares within a forest reserve area in Sipitang have been approved by the State Government for village settlements. Qhazanah Bhd Chairman and Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusoff Yaccob said this during a meeting with the Sabah Forestry Department on Thursday, adding that the land was recently approved by the State Legislative Assembly. The land comprises a Class Two Forest Reserve, which was formerly under the concession of Sabah Forest Industries. The meeting was aimed at organising, coordinating and standardising matters related to villages already inhabited by local residents. 'This is good news for the people. The Forestry Department has agreed to release the land for the settlers, particularly for residents who have already opened and cultivated the land,' he said. The meeting also discussed gazetting areas from Long Pasia, Long Mio, Meligan, Iburu, Mendulong, Sulub, Pakiak, Kampung Klias Baru and several other locations deemed suitable for opening. Residents hope this decision will become a reality, ensuring that those who have already opened the land will no longer feel threatened or fear eviction. Dr Yusoff said this is the Chief Minister's intention to listen to and fulfil the wishes of rural residents in need of land. Also present were Forest Resource Management Division Chief Azman Said, Sipitang District Forestry Officer Andrew Monis, Kota Kinabalu Regional Forestry Officer Mohd Nasir Ag Suman, Community Development Leader Unit representative Wendy Agung Baruh and District Chief OKK Daut Kassim. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah's jobless rate dips to 6.2pc

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Phoong reaffirmed his commitment to focusing on industrial development to achieve economic transformation for the State, saying he will continue working step by step until people see meaningful change occurring. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's unemployment rate fell to 6.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2025, returning to pre-pandemic levels last seen in 2019, according to the Labour Force Survey released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said this represents the lowest unemployment rate since the Covid-19 pandemic and reflects the State's positive economic progress. The rate declined from 6.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2025. The number of unemployed persons dropped significantly from 144,500 in the first quarter of 2024 to 120,300 in the second quarter of 2025 - a reduction of over 20,000 in 18 months. This figure is even lower than the pre-pandemic level of 122,200 unemployed in the second quarter of 2019. Despite this progress, Phoong said substantial efforts are still needed to reduce the unemployment rate, which has remained high for the past decade, to match the national average. Sabah's unemployment rate had peaked at 9.1 per cent during the pandemic before declining to around 7 per cent in 2023-2024. 'This proves that job opportunities are increasing, particularly due to rapid industrial sector development in recent years. 'Major investments by local factories and foreign investors operating in Sabah have directly impacted job creation for the State's youths,' he said. The employed population also showed remarkable growth, increasing from 1.674 million in the first quarter of 2024 to 1.813 million in the second quarter of 2025 - an addition of nearly 150,000 people. Sabah recorded the second-highest increase in employed population in Malaysia during this period, after Selangor. However, Phoong acknowledged that Sabah still has the highest unemployment rate in the country, requiring more time and effort to change. He expressed optimism that through continued investment attraction, support for local enterprise development and downstream industry advancement, Sabah can create more job opportunities and reduce unemployment to below 100,000 people in the coming years. As Sabah DAP Chairman, Phoong reaffirmed his commitment to focusing on industrial development to achieve economic transformation for the State, saying he will continue working step by step until people see meaningful change occurring. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Zara likely had 20-30 injuries

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Pro-bono family lawyer Shahlan Jufri was called in every time they confirmed an injury, whereby the specialists gave their views and explanation on each injury. Kota Kinabalu: At least 20 to 30 injuries were possibly detected by pathologists doing last Sunday's post-mortem on Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, according to a Daily Express observation outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, here, where it was conducted. Our reporter painstakingly recorded each time the family lawyer holding a watching brief during the autopsy rushed into the room. Pro-bono family lawyer Shahlan Jufri was called in every time they confirmed an injury, whereby the specialists gave their views and explanation on each injury. 'Every injury was looked at and assessed,' he said, adding that he took note of the injuries that were highlighted by Dr Jessie Hui (Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1) and forensic pathology consultant Dr Khairul Anuar Zainun from Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Selangor. The team who worked non-stop for eight hours checked her remains thoroughly for all kinds of injuries, especially those she may have sustained due to alleged bullying. Shahlan said each injury was evaluated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and he was briefed on the nature of the injuries. However, he declined to reveal anything, saying it is up to the authorities. "I witnessed the post-mortem process right to the end as the pathologist checked through every part of the body including internal organs,' he said. Zara was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory from an apparent fall from the third floor of her hostel in Papar district on July 16. She died the next day at the QEH and buried at her hometown in Sipitang. However, there were doubts over the circumstances leading to her death with questions raised about the possibility of her being a victim of school bullying. Her mother Noraidah Lamat, 45, subsequently through her lawyers raised questions about the thoroughness of the police investigation as no autopsy was carried out. Subsequently, the Attorney-General's Chambers told the police to exhume the body so that a post-mortem could be carried out. Shahlan said the autopsy was done in a transparent manner with no interference by any quarter. Shahlan together with legal partner Hamid Ismail were appointed by Noraidah to represent the family. He said the autopsy report was not a public document but would be revealed in court if an inquest was held. For an inquest to held, a Special Coroner's Court would establish facts that led to a sudden death that remained unexplained. A coroner has to decide whether there is a criminal element in the case of the death. The last time a Coroner's inquest based on popular public interest was held was in 1979 to establish how the 11 people on board the Nomad plane, including then chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, met their deaths on June 6, 1976. The inquest in that case was only held three years later because nobody volunteered to head the inquest, saying it was a 'hot potato' until a young magistrate then, Datuk Ansari Abdullah took up the challenge. A Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department task force has been formed to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina's death. Inspector-General of Police secretariat (corporate communication) said the task force consisting of nine officers and personnel had been deployed to Sabah. 'The task force is part of the police's commitment to ensure the investigation is conducted transparently and thoroughly,' the secretariat said. The remains of Zara, 13, were reburied at the Tanjung Ubi Islamic cemetery in Kg Mesapol in Sipitang following the autopsy. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
