Guardiola wants to bring Ter Stegen to Man City: Reports

dpa Madrid Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to bring Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to his team, according to several media reports. Ter Stegen, currently at Barcelona, is Guardiola's preferred candidate to replace current starting keeper Ederson, who is flirting with a move to Saudi Arabia or the Serie A, the newspaper El Nacional said on Thursday. According to the reports, first talks over the transfer have already been held. 'Guardiola appreciates Ter Stegen's style of play and experience, especially his qualities in building up the game, his tactical intelligence and his calmness in goal - all qualities that fit perfectly with his style,' El Nacional wrote. Last week, Spanish newspapers said that Ter Stegen is to be only the third-choice goalkeeper at Barcelona in the upcoming season. The Sport newspaper said that coach Hansi Flick has already told the German that Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny are the first two options ahead of him. Szczesny stood in for Ter Stegen after the latter suffered a major knee injury in September and was sidelined for about seven months. The Mundo Deportivo newspaper, meanwhile, said that Flick isn't even counting on the German goalkeeper for the new season. Ter Stegen reportedly feels at home in Barcelona and in principle wants to fulfil his contract until 2028. However, due to the 2026 World Cup, he can't afford to spend a season on the bench and risk losing his starting position at the Germany national team. As Barcelona started the pre-season preparations, Ter Stegen has only completed individual sessions in the fitness room. The official reason for his absence from team training is back issues. Chelsea, Manchester United, Galatasaray and Monaco are reportedly interested in signing Ter Stegen.

The pair appeared to start drifting back in 2019, when fashion entrepreneur Cristina moved back to Barcelona to focus on her business interests. But it was Pep's decision last November to renew his contract with Manchester City until 2027 that reportedly expedited their split. Now, the manager has pledged to visit Barcelona once a week in between fixtures, the El Nacional report claims. Maria Lapiedra, a source close to the pair, said the decision was to prevent them going weeks without seeing each other. The report also states that the couple - who share three children - continue to wear their weddings rings. The rescue operation appeared to kick off last month - amid reports that Pep had returned to the family home in Barcelona for a secret visit. The 54-year-old took a private jet from Manchester just hours after his team's 3-1 win against Plymouth in the FA Cup. They had spent the majority of their marriage living separately when Cristina decided to move back to Barcelona with one of their daughters, Valentina. The pair continued to make things work long distance until their split in December of last year. However, they insisted that things would remain amicable throughout divorce proceedings - and that they would even share the same legal team. Sources said in February that they had already agreed the initial terms of a multi-million pound settlement agreement - which would be finalised in a matter of weeks. Respected Spanish journalist Lorena Vazquez, who broke the story of their split, revealed: "They want it above all to be friendly for the sake of their children. "As you can imagine money is not going to be an issue and they have already agreed the initial terms to make sure this separation is the most cordial possible. "They have a very good relationship, so much so that the same lawyer is arranging the whole thing. "The divorce is on the way and is being left in the hands of people with their absolute trust." 7 Pep's decision to renew his contract with the club is believed to be a major factor in their split Credit: Alamy 7 The manager has made several trips back to Barcelona in a reported attempt to rectify their marriage Credit: Alamy 7 The couple with their daughter Maria at Wimbledon last year Credit: AP 7 Pep kissing Cristina Serra after winning the UEFA Champions League 2022/23 final Credit: Getty

Pep Guardiola and Cristina Serra 'are giving each other a second chance' and 'not all is lost in their marriage', claim reports in Spain after Man City boss 'spent three days in Barcelona'

Pep Guardiola and his wife Cristina Serra are reportedly trying to reconcile their marriage, after the Man City boss spent three days with her in Barcelona over Easter. Guardiola and Serra, a fashion entrepreneur, met back in 1994 and married in 2014. News of their shock split became public in January, with reports the following month that the couple had begun divorce proceedings. According to Catalan newspaper El Nacional, Guardiola and Serra are reportedly prepared to 'give each other another chance' and state that 'all is not lost in their marriage.' The report claims the Man City boss had returned to Barcelona over Easter and stayed in the family's mansion in the city. Previous reports have claimed Guardiola's unexpected decision last November to renew his contract with the Premier League club for another two years had been a key factor in the split. Serra returned to Barcelona with their youngest child in 2019 to focus on her business interests and was reportedly to have decided to split with Guardiola after learning of his decision to stay in the UK until 2027. The latest report claims Guardiola has pledge to visit Barcelona once a week, then leave again due to his role as Man City head coach. Maria Lapiedra, who is married to Barcelona based journalist Gustavo Gonzalez, told the outlet that Guardiola had made the commitment to prevent the couple going weeks without seeing each other. The report also claims both Guardiola and Serra continue to wear their wedding rings, an apparent display that the couple of 30 years are seeking to reconcile. Guardiola and Serra married in an intimate ceremony on the outskirts of Barcelona in 2014 but decided to part ways in December. The couple, who met in 1994, had been living apart for more than five years after Serra moved back to Barcelona with one of their three daughters, Valentina, 17, while Guardiola remained in Manchester. They have two other children together: Maria, 24 and Marius, 22. Guardiola and Serra had remained a couple despite not living in the same city and have regularly been pictured together in the years since. Sport reported earlier this year that the decision to end their marriage was made in December, with only members of their inner circle aware of the split. Their trusted friends and family have also been told not to disclose any further information, according to the publication. Serra decided to leave Manchester in 2019 to help oversee the fashion company owned by her family, Serra Claret, which stocks several brands the City manager is often seen wearing. Guardiola and Serra met while the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss was modelling for designer Antonio Miro in the shop in the Spanish city. They began a long-distance relationship when Guardiola was a footballer, before they bought a home together in Barcelona. The couple later moved to Germany when Guardiola was manager of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick held a two-hour meeting with one of his main stars to discuss a slump in form ahead of Wednesday's blistering 4-0 Champions League quarterfinal first leg win over Borussia Dortmund according to El Nacional, which cited anonymous sources. The 2024/2025 season has seen Raphinha complete one of modern soccer's most impressive comeback arcs. From being on the chopping block in the summer and placed in the shop window, the Brazilian decided not to let his ego get in the way when moved out of his right wing berth by a teenager in Lamine Yamal. Being placed on the left flank was something we'd already seen on Xavi Hernandez's watch, but it is under the club legend's successor Flick that we've subsequently witnessed Raphinha become a genuine Ballon d'Or candidate. His exploits in the mentioned 4-0 win over Dortmund saw him equal Lionel Messi for the most combined goals and assists in a single edition of the Champions League. But we can't ignore the fact that Raphinha returned from the international break out of sorts. An interview with Romario where he made incendiary comments about Argentina came back to bite him as Brazil was thrashed 4-1 in a Buenos Aires World Cup qualifier, and Raphinha was clearly bothered in the aftermath of last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Real Betis where he was seen losing it with teammate Marc-Andre ter Stegen. According to El Nacional, this prompted Flick to call a meeting with his number 11 which lasted for more than two hours. The German wanted to know if the 28-year-old 'had any problems away from the pitch that could be influencing his performance'. At a prematch press conference to preview the Dortmund tie, Flick said that there was nothing up with Raphinha, and batted away suggestions that he could be struggling with fatigue. 'I don't think he's not fresh. After the break we gave him a little time to recover, but in training he is as always - fantastic. We have kept an eye on him, but he is very dynamic and ready for tomorrow's game,' Flick insisted. Though it wasn't his best performance of the season, Raphinha showed signs of his recent form against Dortmund and scored his side's opening goal. Hopefully for Culers, the strike will give him the confidence he needs to get back on track at a time when Barca is still in line for an impressive treble.
