Petroleum Minister inspects LNG infrastructure in Ain Sokhna ahead of summer demand surge
Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawy conducted an inspection tour at Ain Sokhna's SUMED and Sonker ports to review infrastructure readiness for receiving additional Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) as part of Egypt's summer energy preparedness plan. Joined by senior petroleum sector officials, Badawy assessed progress on critical projects supporting the import, regasification, and delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the national gas grid—an essential step in securing fuel for electricity generation during peak summer months. The minister began his visit at the marine berth in SUMED port, where the FSRU Hoegh Galleon is currently docked. He observed the vessel's ongoing operations, which include LNG unloading, regasification, and injection into the national grid. Badawy also inspected the newly completed second marine berth at SUMED, which has been under development since September of last year. Designed to host an additional regasification vessel, the berth is now 100% complete, with trial operations underway ahead of the FSRU's arrival. The project is considered a key component of Egypt's national strategy to enhance natural gas infrastructure. The tour continued at Sonker port, where the minister reviewed progress on laying horizontal pipelines that will connect a future regasification vessel to the national grid. He also examined the installation of a 36-inch, 17-kilometer gas import pipeline, which will serve as a vital conduit for the third FSRU expected to dock at the site. During the visit, Badawy received detailed briefings from Yasser Salah, Chairperson of GASCO, and Walid Lotfy, Chairperson of Petrojet. The two entities are collaborating on LNG infrastructure projects at both SUMED and Sonker ports. GASCO led the engineering and technical studies, sourced materials and equipment, and provided project management. Petrojet executed the construction, which includes two high-capacity marine and onshore pipelines, and the installation of two massive 16-inch-diameter loading arms—among the largest globally—to ensure efficient regasified gas handling. The SUMED project has been finalized and is fully operational in anticipation of the second FSRU's arrival. Meanwhile, construction continues at Sonker port to ready the infrastructure for the docking of a third regasification vessel. These developments are part of a broader national effort to reinforce Egypt's natural gas supply chain and ensure stable electricity production during the high-demand summer period.

Germany's Mukran LNG terminal at 5% utilisation in Q1, says DUH
BERLIN, April 7 (Reuters) - Germany's liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Baltic Sea port of Mukran operated at 5% capacity in the first quarter of 2025, an analysis showed on Monday, amid local opposition and criticism over its environmental impact and excess capacity. Germany has expanded its natural gas import options to replace Russian pipeline supply and deployed floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), raising overcapacity concerns. here. Utilisation of the Mukran LNG terminal dropped to 5% in the first quarter from 14% a year earlier, when it was still operating in Lubmin, a port town near the border with Poland, according to German Environmental Aid (DUH) analysis of data by Gas Infrastructure Europe. This compares with 49% and 83% utilisation rates at North Sea LNG terminals Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuettel, operated by state-owned Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET). Marking its approval anniversary on April 9, DUH said the terminal fed only 1.3 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas into the grid last year, about 1.5% of Germany's total gas consumption. "The Ruegen LNG terminal is not just a fossil dead end that seriously threatens the climate and our future, it is a bad investment that was foreseeable," Sascha Mueller-Kraenner, DUH managing director, said in a statement. The project has triggered local opposition from the resort town of Binz, saying it was hurting tourism in one of top tourist attractions for Germans and harming marine life, but legal challenges have been thrown out. Deutsche Regas, which operates the Mukran terminal, said the terminal was feeding 120–150 gigawatt hours per day into the German grid, adding it expects the volume to remain stable. "The relevance of critical energy infrastructure is not determined by short-term utilization, but rather by available capacity, utilization during periods of high demand or crises, and at most by long-term utilization," the company said. It said it offers regasification services through "take-or-pay" slot contracts, ensuring terminal fees regardless of usage. In February, Deutsche Regas announced the termination of the charter contract for Energos Power FSRU, citing competitive disadvantages to terminals operated by DET. On Friday, Deutsche Regas launched a bidding round for long-term regasification capacity in Mukran, offering an additional 5 bcm per year from 2027 to 2043. It also said it plans to restart a second FSRU, aiming to restore the terminal's full exit capacity of 13.5 bcm annually by 2027.

Egypt expands LNG infrastructure with new regasification agreements
CAIRO – 16 March 2025: Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, recently held discussions with Steven Kobos, CEO of the U.S.-based LNG solutions company Excelerate Energy, to explore leasing floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs). Their talks focused on strengthening Egypt's LNG sector through technical collaboration and trade partnerships, according to a ministry statement. In addition to this initiative, a government delegation will travel to Germany later this month to finalize a lease agreement for another regasification unit. Egypt is also preparing to sign an agreement with Cyprus to lease an FSRU that will be stationed in the country to help meet peak energy demand during the summer. The government is further expanding its regasification capacity in the Red Sea and Ain Sokhna. Currently, two regasification vessels are docked in the Red Sea, and plans are in place to bring a third unit to Ain Sokhna by June 2025. Additionally, a fourth unit from Turkey is expected to be operational this summer, reinforcing Egypt's energy security strategy and boosting its LNG infrastructure.

Egypt in talks with Excelerate Energy for floating gas unit, ministry says
Egypt is in talks with Excelerate Energy for a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to help ensure steady natural gas supplies for the Egyptian domestic market, the petroleum ministry said in a statement on Thursday. Steven Kobos, CEO of Excelerate Energy, expressed his company's readiness to supply the necessary FSRUs to Egypt, according to the statement. Excelerate is a U.S. based firm offering downstream LNG infrastructure and a fleet of 11 FRSUs, according to its website. Egypt already has a floating LNG import terminal at Ain Sokhna and has contracted a second vessel that is due to start running in mid-2025. It has been exploring different options for additional gas facilities amid a chronic gas shortage and higher projected demand for electricity during the summer. Kobos also highlighted the potential for increased collaboration in LNG trading and projects, fuelled by significant confirmed reserves and new discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean. Egypt and Cyprus signed agreements last month to enable the export of gas from Cyprus's offshore fields via Egypt as both countries seek to bolster the Eastern Mediterranean's role as an energy hub.
