Sika eyes Gulf expansion with Qatar-based GAF acquisition

Sika has acquired Gulf Additive Factory LLC in the State of Qatar. The company manufactures a wide range of construction chemical products and has a strong standing in the fast-growing Qatar construction market. The acquisition strengthens Sika's foothold in the country and provides exciting opportunities for further expansion. Gulf Additive Factory LLC (GAF) is renowned for its high-quality solutions and profound technical expertise. An extensive product range, including concrete admixtures, mortars, flooring, waterproofing and facade systems (EIFS: Exterior Insulation and Finish System) is manufactured in a strategically well-located production facility close to Doha. GAF's large, modern manufacturing site will provide Sika with the opportunity to expand and drive growth in Qatar and the neighboring countries. The combination of Sika's existing product portfolio and locally produced additions, such as the EIFS system, perfectly positions Sika to benefit from the increased demand for energy efficient 'cool houses'. Furthermore, the possibility to consolidate its operations to one site will generate important cost efficiencies. Sika has acquired Gulf Additive Factory LLC in Qatar to strengthen its position in the growing construction market. GAF's modern facility near Doha and broad product range, including EIFS, will support local production, cost efficiencies, and regional expansion. The deal aligns with Qatar's Vision 2030 and expected 4 per cent CAGR in construction through 2028. The construction market in Qatar is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 4% until 2028. Growth will be driven by large investments in the energy and utilities sector as well as major projects in transportation, healthcare, tourism, and industrial manufacturing. The positive outlook is supported by Qatar National Vision 2030 with the key goal to diversify the economy while focusing on social and environmental development. "With this acquisition, we will strengthen our local expertise and production setup. It will provide us with a strong foundation to continue to drive our growth and benefit from the ambitious investment programs in both the infrastructure and commercial construction segments. We warmly welcome the GAF employees to the Sika team and look forward to growing our business together." Christoph Ganz, Regional Manager EMEA . PlayStation handheld reportedly in development and may release alongside PlayStation 6

A full PlayStation handheld console is reportedly in development and could launch alongside the PlayStation 6. The rumor mill surrounding a potential PlayStation handheld console has been quiet since last December. However, a regular insider on the NeoGAF forums recently claimed that Sony is working on a portable PlayStation. The leaker, HeisenbergFX4, is usually more focused on Xbox leaks, but in a thread about the PlayStation Portal, said, "A full blown PS handheld is coming." When asked by other GAF dwellers, they claimed sources and added, "Timing-wise somewhere around PS6 launch," when prodded on a release date. Which means that a handheld PlayStation console will be part of the next generation of consoles, which we expect to launch sometime in 2027 or 2028. Previous PS handheld rumors painted a picture of a console that could run PS4 games natively and probably stream PS5 games like the PlayStation Portal. A Bloomberg report from Thanksgiving said that Sony is using the Portal as a basis for its PlayStation handheld, though at the time, it was positioned as a console to take on the Nintendo Switch 2. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. PlayStation's main rival, Xbox, has teased an Xbox handheld for years, and is allegedly dipping its toes in the portable waters with an Asus-made/Xbox-branded handheld. With the Switch 2 launching in June and new consoles from Sony and Microsoft coming in the next couple of years, the future of console gaming is looking more and more portable.

Trades skills course provides second chances

This story was originally published on Construction Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Construction Dive newsletter. The construction industry faces a stark shortage of workers, but programs and people across the country are working at the local level to solve the problem. This series highlights those efforts helping to recruit the next generation of construction pros. Read previous entries here. Do you know of a group that is helping to attract workers to the construction industry? Let us know. When Roderick Colvin introduces himself, he sometimes starts by stating his title: senior external learning and development relationship specialist with GAF Roofing Academy. Other times, he begins by listing his former inmate numbers from when he was in federal prison. 'I introduce myself in such a way because I'm absolutely transparent about who I am, where I've been and hopefully serve as an example of what an individual could be,' Colvin told Construction Dive. The GAF Roofing Academy offers free weeklong roofing classes and soft skills training from Parsippany, New Jersey-based roofing and waterproofing manufacturer GAF. Colvin said the program often connects graduates with commercial firms for potential placement. Since 2020, the academy has trained more than 4,300 people nationwide in over 365 classes and has made upwards of 2,500 job placements across the country. The goal is to get participants job-ready promptly. This week for example, a class is taking place in Grand Junction, Colorado, providing graduates a certificate of completion and an OSHA 10-hour certification for free. About 10% of those individuals are in situations GAF describes as 'justice-involved,' meaning they have been charged with a crime or served time in prison. Colvin knows it can be a challenge for individuals with a criminal background or those reentering the workforce from prison to navigate their career path. Colvin received a 15-year sentence for being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and spent his time in federal prison earning a teacher's aid certification through the Department of Labor. He later obtained further teaching certification from Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Illinois. He eventually pursued a job to support others in reentry. 'On the justice-involved side of it, I always encourage them that it is never the fact that they are a convicted felon that would prevent them from getting employment. The fact of the matter is that it would be a lack of skills that would prevent you from getting employment,' Colvin said. 'So, I would encourage them to take a direction of going toward skilled trades.' And the industry needs more skilled craftworkers. Estimates from Associated Builders and Contractors indicate that construction needs to add an estimated 439,000 net new workers this year in order to meet anticipated demand. Training, preparation and partnership Aqua Seal Roofing, a commercial roofing firm based in Cayce, South Carolina, which is outside of Columbia, partnered with GAF in the spring of 2021, according to company chief operations officer Mills Snell. The firm collaborated with the academy to host a five-day workshop to teach roofing skills in Columbia. Twenty students completed the training and Aqua Seal hired four, Snell said. After that success, the two firms hosted an academy with the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Snell said they trained 10 inmates within two months from parole. Again, the company hired four full-time. They have repeated the process every year since. 'Providing opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds to enter the trades is crucial,' Snell said. 'Some of our strongest roofers have come from unexpected places; they just needed the chance — or a second chance — to showcase their abilities.' But it is not just trade skills that can make the difference, Colvin said. The academy also focuses on soft skills, such as professional conflict resolution and interview tips, which he says are key to aiding the transition. 'It helps make those contractors on the commercial side understand that some of these individuals that we train up come from a justice-involved background or come from a background where educational opportunities were not available to them because of barriers that they encountered,' Colvin said. 'If they are equipped with the resources to help them with the soft skills training to be able to transition into a work environment, they could serve as a valuable employee.' Snell said the academy provides a symbiotic relationship. 'Finding skilled labor is a big challenge for our industry and this program, from a trusted company, is filling that need, while supporting these communities,' he said.

At the Swearing-in Ceremony of New Members of the Gambia Armed Forces Council and the Decoration of the Newly Promoted General Officers of GAF to the Ranks of Commodore and Brigadier General Respectively

Your Excellency, The Vice President, Honourable Minister of Defence and other Cabinet Ministers Present, Honourable Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chief of Staff, The Secretary General, Head of Civil Service and Secretary To Cabinet, Permanent Secretaries, The Chief of Defence Staff, The Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, Service Commanders, Members of The Gambia Armed Forces Council, The Media Houses present, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, It is indeed a pleasure for me to preside over this swearing-in ceremony of the new members of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Council and the decoration of the promoted General officers of GAF to the ranks of Commodore and Brigadier General, respectively. I heartily congratulate the new members of the Armed Forces Council on their well-deserved nominations to this important Government body. It is reassuring that the process leading to this occasion is in accordance with our Constitutional provisions. With this reassurance, I am hopeful that you will all work as a unified team to deliver on expectations and measure up to the trust and confidence reposed in you by the public. This is necessary to ensure that we have committed and competent members to serve on the Armed Forces Council efficiently and effectively at all times. The Gambia Armed Forces Council, which is a constitutional requirement, serves as an additional and essential means of facilitating the achievement of our objectives and the desire to have a responsive, professional, efficient, and effective defence sector. All these are vital for the maintenance of peace and stability in the country. As expected, I urge the Council to continue working closely with the Ministry of Defence and The Gambia Armed Forces to complement their efforts. For the Decorated Commodore and Brigadier General, let me specifically remind you that promotions come with added responsibilities. As the well-quoted adage teaches, to whom much is given, much more shall be expected. I advise you to prioritise the interest of this country, your institution, and the welfare of the personnel under your command over your personal interests. This will earn you the respect and loyalty you deserve. At this very crucial moment in our history, the nation needs and demands from you the degree of loyalty, courage, and professional competence required to preserve peace and security in our dear country and defend our hard-earned democracy. I have no doubt that you all possess the wisdom and good judgment in the conduct of your tasks and that you will continue to exhibit a high level of professionalism in the face of emerging security challenges. Always remember that the nation expects that you will also meaningfully contribute to the success story of The Gambia Armed Forces. My government will support you to achieve your goals, and we will continue to engage in institutional and Security Sector reforms, while remaining committed to the principles of the Constitution. I thank and applaud you all for accepting your new appointments and wish the entire Council, as well as GAF, success in your noble endeavours. To conclude, I convey gratitude and appreciation to everyone who contributed to the selection process of the promoted officers and the successful planning of today's ceremony. Thank you all for your presence and attention. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Office of The President- Republic of the Gambia.
