PlayStation handheld reportedly in development and may release alongside PlayStation 6

Tom's Guide15-05-2025

A full PlayStation handheld console is reportedly in development and could launch alongside the PlayStation 6.
The rumor mill surrounding a potential PlayStation handheld console has been quiet since last December. However, a regular insider on the NeoGAF forums recently claimed that Sony is working on a portable PlayStation.
The leaker, HeisenbergFX4, is usually more focused on Xbox leaks, but in a thread about the PlayStation Portal, said, "A full blown PS handheld is coming."
When asked by other GAF dwellers, they claimed sources and added, "Timing-wise somewhere around PS6 launch," when prodded on a release date.
Which means that a handheld PlayStation console will be part of the next generation of consoles, which we expect to launch sometime in 2027 or 2028.
Previous PS handheld rumors painted a picture of a console that could run PS4 games natively and probably stream PS5 games like the PlayStation Portal.
A Bloomberg report from Thanksgiving said that Sony is using the Portal as a basis for its PlayStation handheld, though at the time, it was positioned as a console to take on the Nintendo Switch 2.

PlayStation's main rival, Xbox, has teased an Xbox handheld for years, and is allegedly dipping its toes in the portable waters with an Asus-made/Xbox-branded handheld.
With the Switch 2 launching in June and new consoles from Sony and Microsoft coming in the next couple of years, the future of console gaming is looking more and more portable.

Nothing's first pair of real headphones are coming soon — here's what we know so far

Nothing is back at it with a new hardware reveal in the Nothing Headphone (1), slated for official debut alongside its Phone (3) on July 1. Nothing CEO Carl Pei voiced his optimism about the forthcoming set of gadgets, citing the launch at the tail end of his speech at SXSW London on Thursday. It's likely to be the brand's first set of over-ear headphones, which have so far designed some of the best wireless earbuds. There's very little we know about the new Nothing Headphone (1), though Pei did confirm the naming. It fits with alternative Nothing-branded devices, such as the Nothing Ear (3) and Nothing (open). One thing you can expect is a ChatGPT integration as seen across Nothing's audio and smartphone lineup. We tried ChatGPT with the Nothing Ear to solid results, and it's cropped up on almost every release so far, so it would only make sense for it to debut on the Nothing Headphone (1), as well. You can also expect a competitive price. Nothing might be known for premium products, but it usually stamps them with a significant value proposition. Most Headphone (1) pricing rumors suggest around $400, which undercuts the new Sony WH1000-XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones by about $50. Another particular highlight for Nothing's brand is its design ethos. It loves its transparent technology and LED glyph lighting, made popular on its Nothing Ear (1) and Nothing Phone (1). Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Mockups abound on what the Nothing Headphone (1) could inevitably look like. While mostly relegated to its smartphone side, it would be interesting to see Nothing's glyph design pop up on the Headphone (1), especially in reference to certain modes or features like ANC, incoming calls, or ChatGPT. The glyph integration could not only put Sony and Apple in their place, but mark it as one of the best headphones in terms of chic alone. Nothing recently announced an ongoing audio partnership with KEF, a high-end speaker and headphone maker, but reports suggest this most likely pertains to the Phone (3)'s internal speakers. We'll have to wait and see. More information about Nothing's first-ever pair of headphones is set to be unveiled on July 1 alongside the Phone (3) itself.

PlayStation's DualSense Edge wireless controller is on sale for a record-low price

Now's a great time to save on Sony gaming gear thanks to the most recent Days of Play sale. PlayStation 5 consoles, accessories, games and even PS Plus subscriptions have been discounted, and one of the standout deals is on the PS5 DualSense Edge controller. You can pick one up for $169, which is 15 percent off its usual price. The deal is available on Amazon and from Sony directly. The layout apes that of the regular DualSense controller, but there's a lot more going on with the Edge. For instance, there are function buttons below each thumbstick that allow you to swap between button configurations (which you can customize at any time in the PS5 settings). On the rear, there are switches that enable you to change the pull length of the shoulder triggers. There are also rear paddles, and you can choose between a set of levers or shorter half-domes. It's possible to swap out the thumbsticks as well and, because they attach to the controller magnetically, it's a cinch to do so. Other than the standard nubs, you can choose between short-stemmed convex and long-stemmed convex options. There's also a cable lock that prevents you from accidentally removing the USB-C charging cable by accident. You might want to keep that cable plugged in. One of the major downsides of the DualSense Edge is its battery life. In our testing, we got around five to six hours of use on a single charge, less than the six or seven we get with the standard DualSense. Last but not least, the DualSense Edge comes with a hardshell carrying case. There's even a passthrough flap through which you can thread a USB-C cable to charge the controller while it's cocooned in the case. There are, of course, lots of other intriguing discounts in the Days of Play sale, including one on the standard PS5 DualSense controller. That has dropped to $55, which is $20 off the list price.
