Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs. Honor Magic V5: Which foldable will win?
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is Samsung's thinnest foldable phone yet, but the landscape is only getting more and more competitive. Case in point, Samsung's flagship no longer holds the No. 1 spot on our best foldable phone list, and now a new contender may leave it in the dust once again. And no, we're not talking about Apple's rumored iPhone Fold on the horizon. No, this foldable is already out (in certain markets at least), and it deletes any hope Samsung had of delivering the thinnest foldable of 2025. Earlier this month, Honor launched the Magic V5 in Chinese markets with a powerful new chipset, huge AI integration, and a super-thin build measuring just 8.8mm when folded and 4.1mm when opened fully. That's just a hair thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which measures 8.9mm folded and 4.2mm unfolded. Granted, we're talking literal millimeters here. In everyday use, you probably won't notice much difference between these phones unless you're comparing them side by side. But it certainly gives Honor bragging rights to beat out both Samsung's latest foldable flagship and last year's winner, Oppo's Find N5, which measures 8.93mm thick, for slimmest profile. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Honor Magic V5 Dimensions Folded: 158.4×72.8×8.9 mmUnfolded: 143.2×158.4×4.2 mm Folded: 156.8×74.3×8.8 mmUnfolded: 156.8×145.9×4.1 mm Weight 215 g 217g or 222g Inner screen 8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 2184×1968, 120 Hz 7.95″ LTPO OLED, 2352×2172, 120 Hz Cover screen 6.5″ FHD+ AMOLED 2X, 2520×1080, 120 Hz 6.43″ OLED, 2376×1060, 120 Hz, 5 000 nits Chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy Snapdragon 8 Elite RAM 12 GB/16GB 12GB/16GB Storage 256/512 GB/1 TB 256/512 GB/1 TB Battery 4,400mAh 6,100mAh Size isn't the only place where Honor has Samsung beat. The Magic V5 has a colossal 6,100mAh battery compared to the Z Fold 7's 4,400mAh one. That large internal screen is a huge battery drain, which makes it genuinely remarkable that Honor managed to eke out a two-day battery life in such a slim design. While Samsung offers a slightly larger internal screen, Honor packs a brighter display capable of up 5,000 nits vs. the Z Fold 7's 2,600 nits. That being said, both share the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, so you can expect similar performance capabilities. On paper, the Honor Magic V5 has the Galaxy Z Fold 7 beat, but its biggest drawback is availability. It won't be available in Europe until later this year, after Samsung's foldable has hit stores. Plus, Honor devices aren't officially sold in the U.S., cutting off a huge swatch of the smartphone market. It took Samsung several generations to finally start getting the hang of foldables, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is undeniably its most impressive iteration yet. But its $2,000 price tag was already hard to swallow when the series first debuted in 2019, and things have only gotten more expensive in the years since. Knowing that phonemakers have the technology to build better foldables, but they're limited to markets outside the U.S., makes Samsung's flagship an even tougher sell. It's clear Samsung will have to step up its game if it wants to continue to be competitive in the foldable landscape. Samsung unveils thin $2000 Galaxy Z Fold 7 foldable phone as it aims to catch up with Chinese rivals
Samsung has announced the $2000 Galaxy Z Fold 7, its slimmest foldable smartphone yet, as it aims to carve out a market for ultra-high-end devices in a rapidly changing mobile phone landscape. The company chose Brooklyn, New York, to unveil its latest and most premium smartphone, which features hardware refinements and advanced AI features that contribute to its higher cost. The $2000 Galaxy Z Fold 7, launching worldwide on July 25, opens like a book, and is noticeably thinner and lighter than its predecessor. The device measures 8.9 mm when folded shut, and weighs 215 gram, although the title of the world's thinnest foldable still belongs to the Honor Magic V5, which is just 8.8 mm thick. 'Foldables were a bold move by Samsung to leverage its expertise in flexible display technology and offer a highly differentiated product to compete with Apple,' Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told on Wednesday. Wood admits that the foldable phone category hasn't lived up to expectations. Consumers have questioned whether they actually need a foldable device and have expressed concerns about the durability of these phones. However, Wood remains hopeful that the new products Samsung launched at its Unpacked summer showcase in New York will help reignite interest in foldables. 'With a slimmer, more competitive design, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could play an important role in driving renewed interest,' he said. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, announced alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, flip-style foldables priced at $1,099.99 and $899.99, respectively, is part of Samsung's long-term vision to be a category leader in foldables. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 remains the company's boldest bet at pushing the smartphone form factor with an extremely thin foldable phone. Folding phones, which either open like a book or have a screen that folds in half, gained recognition when Samsung launched its first foldable device in 2019. In recent years, Honor, Oppo, and other Chinese smartphone makers have used slim foldable designs as a key differentiating factor from Samsung. The competition is only increasing, putting pressure on Samsung, one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers. Samsung's new foldables feature improved designs, better durability, and a host of AI capabilities that could help the company reclaim its position as the leading foldable smartphone maker and boost sales. The entry-level Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, in particular, could open up a new market for foldables, as some analysts believe it may expand the consumer base in key markets, reaching those who had considered buying a foldable phone in the past but were deterred by the high price. 'Having a device that is the size and weight of a traditional smartphone, but with the added benefit of opening to reveal a large display the size of a mini-tablet, is very compelling,' Wood said, when asked how a phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers a differentiated experience to users. 'The challenge is that these devices remain extremely expensive, and consumers are still nervous about their durability over long-term use. There needs to be more education to convince consumers that these devices are indeed robust. Over time, they will undoubtedly move further down the price curve, which could make them more attractive to a wider audience.' With the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung is placing its bet on a form factor that has achieved the thinness of traditional smartphones, while offering a tablet-sized inner display for enhanced multitasking and more immersive video consumption. That may be the biggest differentiating factor between regular smartphones and foldable devices. Samsung Electronics Co is trying to woo a new set of consumers with its foldable phones. Unlike a laptop or tablet, which can perform similar tasks, a foldable slips easily into any pocket that fits a smartphone. The new foldables test Samsung's marketing muscle and design prowess in a challenging smartphone market, amid economic uncertainty and tariff headwinds. Samsung is charging an upfront premium for these devices, yielding higher profit margins, but there is still a long road ahead to prove that foldables are the devices people never knew they needed. Foldables remain a small slice of the overall worldwide smartphone market, with some analysts predicting just a 2 per cent share this year. However, experts say the opportunity for Samsung is significant, particularly in expanding its market share in the premium smartphone segment in key markets like India. Samsung is manufacturing its new foldables domestically in India. Apple, Samsung's biggest rival in the high-end smartphone market, has been notably absent from the foldables space but is rumoured to launch its first folding iPhone sometime next year. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 First Look: Breaking The Iterative Upgrade Cycle
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 in Mint color For years, we've waited for Samsung to compete with its Chinese rivals in terms of cutting-edge folding phone hardware. The Galaxy Z Fold lineup was at the forefront of the iterative upgrade cycle for at least two years. But things are finaly changing with the latest folding phone. Samusng's Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the generational leap forward we've waited years for. The company not only made it thinner, but also delivered the lightest book-style foldable. While it comes at the cost of a few features, the in-hand feel is similar to that of a slab phone. I went hands-on with the device at Galaxy Unpacked, and here's everything you need to know about Samsung's latest book-style foldable phone. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Is The Lightest Book-Style Foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is lighter than the recently launched Honor Magic V5 as well as the Oppo Find N5. It weighs just 215 grams, compared to the Magic V5's 217g and the Find N5's 229g bodies. For context, it is 24g lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and 61g lighter than the original Samsung Galaxy Fold. In fact, it is lighter than most mainstream flagship smartphones. Samsung's own Galaxy S25 Ultra measures 218g on the scale, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max weighs 227g. Its lightweight design is accompanied by a thinner form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures just 4.2mm thin when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded, which is just 0.1mm more than the Honor Magic V5. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Samsung teased the Fold 7 to be the 'thinnest and lightest foldable,' and it delivered. It did so by redesigning the hinge, upgrading the glass to be 50% stronger, and using a titanium plate instead of a carbon fiber sheet under the screen. The new hinge is called Armor HingeFlex and it implements a water droplet design, which also helps reduce the crease. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 no longer sports a deep crease and is on par with its rivals. It still has a sharp edge on the hinge corners, but it doesn't hurt your palm (when holding it in your left hand) as much as the Fold 6. The thinner and lighter design means it is more comfortable and ergonomic in your hand. A More Comfortable In-Hand Feel Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 coverscreen Samsung is finally offering a Fold that doesn't need to be unfolded for a comfortable typing experience. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is more ergonomic thanks to wider and more usable displays. The 6.5-inch cover screen is now in a 21:9 aspect ratio, which is closer to traditional smartphones. As a result, most apps should load fine, and you should be able to interact with them easily. On the inside too, Samsung says, it has optimized more apps for the bigger screen, which should translate to a more seamless folding phone user experience. You get an 8-inch AMOLED display on the inside with support for a 1–120Hz refresh rate and a 2184x1968-pixel resolution. The cover screen is similarly sharp and supports the same refresh rate. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 sports a matte finish on the back. It isn't slippery and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 (cover) and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (back). Samsung has also closed the gap between the phone's body and its hinge frame in the middle. Plus, it is rated IP48 for dust and water resistance. The Teased 'Ultra' Experience Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 foldable display Leading up to the Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung posted many teasers hinting at an 'Ultra Experience.". As I speculated in my previous story, it means borrowing crucial upgrades from the Galaxy S25 Ultra as opposed to the existence of a Z Fold 7 Ultra. Samsung's new foldable is on par with its Galaxy S-series in few key ways. Like every year, it is powered by the same chipset as Samsung's slab flagship. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset for its performance and efficiency needs. It is paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. Going by the Galaxy S25 Ultra, you should expect smooth day-to-day usage with no lag or stutter. More importantly, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 now sports the same main camera as the Galaxy S25 Ultra. You get a 200MP primary camera with optical image stabilization, accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor with autofocus capabilities, and a 10MP telephoto camera with support for 3x optical zoom. Samsung says the main camera is capable of shooting optical-quality 2x zoom images. As for selfie shooters, it sports two 10MP front cameras and the cover screen's front camer now captures a 100-degree FoV, up from last year's 85-degree FoV. The Ultra experience doesn't end there. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 is promised to get seven years of Android OS and security upgrades, which is one more year than the S25 Ultra, since the Fold 7 comes with One UI 8 (based on Android 16) out of the box. It offers some neat tricks like enhanced Photo Assist, a new shortcut icon for Audio Eraser within the Gallery app, and more. Same Battery Capacity And No S Pen Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Fold 7 compared The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 features plenty of upgrades, but the battery capacity unfortunately remains the same as the Z Fold 6. Its 4,400mAh cell is touted to last up to 24 hours, but I'm not expecting long-lasting battery life. It still charges at 25W, which is claimed to offer up to 50% charge within 30 minutes. Samsung has also removed S Pen support from its new Galaxy Z Fold 7. I wasn't a fan of attaching an S Pen case anyway, but for those few customers who used an S Pen with their Fold, you won't be able to do so anymore. Moreover, the inner screen now has a punch-hole cutout for the selfie shooter, so it might not be as immersive as before, but you'll get better video call clarity. Despite the missing S Pen support and unchanged battery capacity, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is Samsung's biggest Fold upgrade in years – at least on paper. It offers a more comfortable in-hand feel with a thinner and lighter design, upgraded primary camera, a more natural aspect ratio on the cover screen, and a chipset bump alongside clever software tricks. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Price And Availability Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 in online-exclusive Mint color All the above-mentioned upgrades come with a price hike. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 costs a hefty $2,000 in the U.S. for the base 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. It is now available for pre-order from as well as carriers and retailers nationwide. The new Samsung foldable will go on sale starting July 25 in Jet Black, Blue Shadow, and Silver Shadow colors, along with an online-exclusive Mint color.

Honor freezes, bakes, and shoots the Magic V5 to prove how durable it is
Vlad, 04 July 2025 Honor made the Magic V5 official a couple of days ago, and today it's shared a new promo video for the phone, which is definitely different. It shows the Magic V5 withstanding a simulation of very forceful pouring rain, which isn't that unexpected considering its IP59 rating for protection from high-pressure water jets. The phone is then frozen, then subjected to a very high temperature. Then things get weird. Steel balls are being shot at the phone to make a point about its durability, and of course it withstands the impacts without any issue. See for yourself above. The Honor Magic V5 is thus billed as incredibly tough despite being a foldable. It comes with a 7.95-inch 2172x2352 LTPO AMOLED folding screen, a 6.43-inch 1060x2376 cover display, the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, 12/16GB of RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TB of storage, and a 5,820 mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. It has a 50 MP main camera with OIS, a 64 MP periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom, a 50 MP ultrawide with autofocus, and a couple of 20 MP selfie cameras.
