JSP workers injured in alleged lathi charge as police stop march to CM Nitish's residence

PATNA: Several workers of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) were allegedly injured during a protest in Patna on Wednesday, after police allegedly resorted to a baton charge to stop them from marching towards the chief minister's residence. The protest, led by JSP founder Prashant Kishor, was part of a 'CM residence gherao' stir to press for a three-point charter of demands. JSP supporters who gathered there to take part in 'CM residence gherao' were stopped by police near Chitkohra Overbridge while they were heading towards the Gardanibagh dharna site. Police had erected barricades the march, leading to a scuffle between personnel and JSP protestors. Videos of the clash quickly went viral on social media. JSP later claimed that several of its supporters sustained injuries in the police action, alleging they were lathi-charged during the protest. Prashant Kishor attacked the state government for using force against peaceful demonstration and attempt to suppress the voice of the people. 'We will not allow this to happen. We will fight against them,' he said. The agitation was organised to protest, what Prashant Kishor called, 'three critical failure of the state government. Later addressing workers, Kishor raised three questions: Why have poor families not received the promised Rs.2 lakh employment aid? Why have Dalit families not been allotted three decimals of land? And why there is silence on alleged corruption in the ongoing land survey? Prashant Kishor, who met the injured supporters shortly after the incident, slammed the state government, accusing it of suppressing genuine public concerns through police force. 'They (government) think that it will impact our fight for justice. But they are under the shadow of illusion. Our fight will continue till demands are met,' he asserted. Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patna, denied the lathicharge and said that the protestors were prevented from marching towards prohibited area. 'Holding agitation is completely banned in prohibited zone,' he told the media while defending police action.

Prashant Kishor's protest runs into police wall 2 kilometres from Bihar assembly

Three workers of Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party were injured as police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse a protest march outside the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. Though Kishor, who was leading a march to the House for the first time since he founded the party in October 2024, was stopped almost two kilometres away from the Vidhan Sabha, he succeeded in making his presence felt, daring police to hit him and saying that officers had no right to use lathi charge on a peaceful demonstration. Slogans of 'Nitish Kumar hosh me aao (Nitish, come to your senses)' and 'Nitish Kumar murdabad (down with Nitish Kumar)' rang loud during the protest before it was dispersed. The week-long monsoon session of Assembly, the last session before 2025 polls, concludes this Friday. Kishor had started the protest march from his Shekhpura house along Bailey Road. The Vidhan Sabha is five kilometres away. He has been demanding that the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government fulfil its promises, such as giving Rs 2 lakh each to 94 lakh poor families, distribution of three decimal land to each Mahadalit family, and completion of the land survey. 'We are only reminding CM of his old promises,' he said. Later, JSP state president Manoj Kumar Bharti led a team to meet state chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena to put forth the party's demands. JSP has set a deadline of a week to implement its promises, failing which the party would resume the protest. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. ‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu' not a politically-motivated film, says Pawan Kalyan

'Hari Hara Veera Mallu' set in a historical context is not a politically-motivated film, but an action thriller and a wholesome family entertainer, said Deputy Chief Minister and actor K. Pawan Kalyan. Talking to media persons at the Jana Sena Party (JSP) office in Mangalagiri on Tuesday (July 22), Mr. Pawan Kalyan expressed happiness at the release of the movie, which saw many delays. Two natural disasters (pandemic) and one man-made disaster (a jibe at the previous administration's alleged misrule) delayed the movie, the Deputy Chief Minister said. Giving details about the movie, Mr. Kalyan said that it is about attempts to retrieve the Kohinoor diamond that was taken away from the Guntur region and landed with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Talking about the Mughal Emperor, Mr. Kalyan said that the anger that remained against Jizyah Tax, levied by Aurangzeb on Hindus, perhaps found a vent through the movie. The characters, however, are fictional, he said, adding that while the film does not have any political overtones, it may acquire them later on.

Pawan Kalyan to attend ‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu' pre-release event on July 23

Deputy Chief Minister and actor K. Pawan Kalyan will attend the pre-release event of his upcoming film 'Hari Hara Veera Mallu' at the AU Convention Centre on Beach Road in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday (July 23). Jana Sena Party (JSP) members are making elaborate arrangements for the event, which was finalised at a short notice. Meanwhile, JSP members organised special prayers for the success of the movie which is scheduled for release on July 24. Senior leaders including Bolisetti Satyanarayana offered prayers and broke coconuts at Sri Sampath Vinayaka Temple at Assilmetta, seeking blessings from the deity for the film's success. MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu also participated in similar rituals at Pendurthi. Fans and supporters are gearing up for celebrations with bike rallies, cake-cutting events, and special screenings to mark the film's release. It has been two years since Pawan Kalyan appeared on screen. His last movie 'Bro' was released in 2023.

(Photo: X/@jansuraajonline) Prashant Kishor praises Manish Kashyap as 'hardworking son of Bihar' Kishor targets illiteracy, corruption, current political leadership in Bihar Kashyap quit BJP citing ineffectiveness, lack of protection last month Months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, famous YouTuber Manish Kashyap on Monday joined poll strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) on Monday. Kashyap joined the JSP at an event organised at the Bapu Bhavan in Bihar's capital city of Patna a month after he quit the BJP. "Famous YouTuber Manish Kashyap has joined Jan Suraaj," the party wrote on X, sharing several photos showing party chief Kishor welcoming him into the party fold. Kishor, who played a pivotal role in the BJP's successful poll campaign during the 2014 general elections as a strategist, heaped praise on Kashyap, who is known for raising issues of public interest despite political backlash. "Manish Kashyap is not just a YouTuber for Jan Suraj, nor is he a former BJP leader, but he is a son of Bihar who has carved out his identity through his own strength, hard work, and wisdom, and wants to do something for the state," Kishor was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. "Jan Suraj is a system that provides opportunities to every young man or individual who wants to contribute to Bihar. If he has joined Jan Suraaj, I see a significant role for him in playing a major part in this campaign for change in Bihar moving forward," he added. This came a month after Kashyap quit the BJP, saying he felt let down by the party and suggested that his role within it had become ineffective. In May, Kashyap had an altercation with junior doctors at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) when he reached there to plead for a patient, after which they allegedly locked him in a room and beat him. "I couldn't protect myself while being in the BJP. How can I help others?' he said during a Facebook live session, explaining his reasons for stepping away. Reacting to Kashyap joining his party, Prashant Kishor said that the coming together of the two young leaders will hold the key to JSP's poll campaign in the coming days. "This is not just the coming together of two young men, but of thousands of youngsters who want to bring about a change in Bihar and get rid of the Lalu, Nitish and Modi rule. The forces who want Bihar to get rid of illiteracy, corruption, and economic exodus have come together," Prashant Kishor said while speaking to India Today TV. The JPS chief said that the party is providing an opportunity to those who had no choice but to vote for the JDU, RJD and the BJP due to the lack of alternatives in the state. While Prashant Kishor has constantly attacked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's government in Bihar and the RJD's past reigns, Kashyap has been at the receiving end of the backlash by respective governments for criticising them by raising issues of public interest, exposing civic and government apathy. JSP IN BIHAR ELECTIONS Prashant Kishor, who launched his Jan Suraaj Party in October last year, has vowed that the JSP will contest all 243 seats in Bihar and will not join either the NDA alliance of the BJP, JDU and LJP or the Mahagathbandhan of the RJD, Congress and Left parties. Over recent months, Kishor has raised his voice against illiteracy, unemployment, corruption, and crime in the state and has attacked the Nitish Kumar government for not being able to find a solution to them. The 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly is scheduled to go to the polls later this year, most likely in October or November. The term of the Bihar Assembly will conclude on November 22.
