This Is The Air Dry Cream I Swear By For My Frizz-Prone Hair

It's official. I have finally hit on my dream summer hair. Tousled, soft waves with bounce and shine, my hair has never looked so summer-ready and effortless. Getting to this point, though, has required considerable effort. For the past year I've been trialling air dry creams and salt sprays, all of which have promised to deliver a good-to-go hair look without the need of a hairdryer, curling tong or straightening iron. None quite made the cut until the Living Proof Style Lab Air-Dry Styler, £27, landed on my desk. Housed unassumingly in a plain black tube, it proved to be the best of the best for my long hair. Scroll on for my full review. The Living Proof Style Lab Air Dry Styler promises to work with the hair's natural texture to keep frizz and flyaways at bay. The formula is made with algae-based polymer and bentonite clay, both of which work together to smooth unruly strands and provide a touch of hold - it's a fine balance, but one this cream gets just right. All that without heat damage. Or the dreaded 'crunch.' 1. Living Proof Style Lab Air-Dry Styler Living Proof say: 'An air-dry hair cream to give you smoother-looking locks without the need for heat activation.' What we know: A brand new launch from Living Proof, this styling cream has been designed to enhance your hair's natural texture while keeping frizz and flyaways at bay thanks to algae-based polymer and bentonite clay. Rachael Martin, beauty editor says: 'As someone with dry, damaged hair that straddles the line between wavy and straight, finding an air dry cream has been nothing short of a total hassle. This one, however, is worth every single penny. Scrunch now, thank me later.' Pros Huge tube A little goes a long way Non greasy Cons Needs a good shake before applying or product doesn't mix adequately 'I'll be honest. I didn't have high hopes here. When it comes to air drying creams my hair just doesn't play ball. Instead of the loose, tousled waves they so often promise, my hair is usually left looking lank and stringy. This, however? I am so impressed. I took a dinky sized lab sample bottle on my holiday last year, purchasing the full size bottle as soon as it launched. The process is a refreshingly simple one. After washing my hair as normal, I squeeze out the excess water before shaking the bottle (very important to ensure it's mixed together properly) and applying a 50p sized dollop into the palms of my hands. I then rub my hands together to ensure an even spread before gently scrunching the cream through my lengths and ends. With any excess, I'll flatten my hands across the top of my hair and pat down gently to settle down the halo of flyaways that so often form. So far, so easy. But how does it fare? As a gal well acquainted with a greasy scalp, I'm impressed. The texture is creamy, but featherlight - there's not a hint of tackiness.' 'My hair does take a while to air dry - a couple of hours, at least. And if I touch my hair before it's fully dry - even after applying Living Proof - it's game over. The natural oils present in my palms seem to wreak havoc where frizz and flyaways are concerned. When I resist twiddling and twirling, however? That's when the magic really happens. The finish is exactly the kind I've been hoping to achieve. There's no grease at the roots, and no dulled-down colour. My hair isn't smooth and polished. Instead, it's soft and full of bounce and movement. My natural waves are defined and, crucially, my flyaways and frizz are barely noticeable. My colour is brighter and fresher. It's all very undone - but artfully so.' 'As someone with dry, damaged hair that straddles the line between wavy and straight, finding an air dry cream has been, quite honestly, a total hassle. This one, however, is worth every single penny. Scrunch now, thank me later.' Rachael Martin is Grazia's beauty editor where she covers all things beauty, health and wellness .

Help Heat-Damaged Hair With These 6 Air Dry Creams

If your hair has been bearing the brunt of hot tools in the form of split ends, dryness and an overall coarse texture, your hair styling routine may be in need of a switch-up. Cue air dry creams, which are essentially a one-way ticket to softer, frizz-free hair that eliminates the need for any and all hot tools. 'A good air dry cream is designed to accentuate your natural hair texture while protecting it from frizz and other elements,' said Ashley Streicher, celebrity hairstylist and R+Co collaborator. 'Air dry creams are so much healthier on the hair compared to hot tools.' Below, find a list of stylist-approved air dry creams, along with a few editor favorites — if we had to guess, we'd say a good hair day is in your future. This curl-defining foam If you're looking to air dry your curls and waves, go with this lightweight foam that'll enhance your curl pattern rather than weighing them down. Unlike other foams that make the hair feel crunchy and sticky, this John Frieda formula offers definition without compromising on softness or flexibility. Celebrity hairstylist DJ Quintero said it's great for taming frizz and adding shine — plus you can use it as a refresher throughout the day. To use, scrunch two to three pumps of the foam into wet hair, making sure to distribute it from root to it from Amazon for $8.50. A styling cream that doubles as hairspray Think of Living Proof's StyleLab air-dry hair styling cream as a hairspray of sorts — yes, it reduces drying time, enhances texture and keeps frizz at bay, but it also locks in your style for all-day wear. The secret is in the formula's algae-based polymers, which offers natural hold and style retention. The cream is also made with bentonite clay to soften strands along with the brand's proprietary smoothing technology to reduce the look of pesky flyaways. Plus, because it's silicone-free, it won't leave behind a waxy residue on your hair. "This product really lasts and doesn't weigh the hair down or make it feel greasy like some other air dry creams can," said Quintero, adding that it's also great in high humidity environments. Get it from Amazon for $34. A fine hair-friendly liquid-to-foam leave-in Want wow-worthy fullness? Go for this formula from Davines, which comes recommended by Striecher. The product starts as a liquid then transforms into a foam upon dispensing. "This whipped liquid-to-foam leave-in is formulated for fine hair and leaves it a little more volumized that your average cream would," she said. Plus, it's infused with roucou oil to protect from UV damage and chicory root extract to add smoothness. Get it from Amazon for $23+ (available in two sizes). A leave-in for fine to medium hair Fine to medium hair types, rejoice! This leave-in conditioner from salon favorite brand Kérastase doubles as a hair perfume and air dry cream thanks to its fresh floral notes and hint of musk. But the formula doesn't just smell the part — it deeply nourishes dry, damaged strands with conditioning plant-based proteins and niacinamide. What's more, it makes it easy to detangle and achieve touchable it from Amazon for $24+ (available in two sizes). This shine-inducing cream Not only will this moisture-rich formula from Amika air dry your hair to perfection, but it'll protect against heat damage and give your strands mirror-like shine, too. The formula teeters the line between being a hair styling product and a haircare product, featuring sea buckthorn, which is packed with vitamin C, vitamin A and fatty acid omega-7 to keep hair nourished. Use it on damp hair as an air dry cream or on dry hair to tame flyaways and freshen up dry-looking it from Sephora for $28. An affordable styling cream that goes a long way Odele's air dry cream is an affordable favorite if you're looking to add texture and shine. It offers the curl- and wave-enhancing benefits of a mousse or gel, but without the crunch. Plus, a little goes a long way — just work a nickel-sized amount into towel-dried hair and get ready for the most perfect heatless hairstyle of your it from Amazon for $11.99.

Refillable beauty is the future. Here are my top picks for a sustainable routine, from skincare to make-up

From empty mascara to shampoo bottles, beauty products create a lot of plastic waste. Switching to refillables is a fairly effortless way to cut down on single-use products that might otherwise end up in landfill. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. The beauty industry is coming under increasing pressure to consider its vast environmental footprint and contribution to global plastic waste. According to the British Beauty Council, 95% of cosmetic packaging is thrown away, and of the 14% of beauty products we recycle, only about 9% can actually be processed. The rest ends up in landfill, taking up to 450 years to break down. And if the planet-saving draw isn't enough, then perhaps the financial gains might sway you; refilling your beauty products can save you some serious cash, too. Although not all beauty products are refillable, thankfully plenty are. These are some of my favourite beauty products – I've used and loved them all – that also have refills. Many are sustainability (and money-saving) gamechangers – it's a win-win-win. Living Proof Full shampoo, 236ml £29 at Sephora£29 at Look FantasticLiving Proof Full shampoo refill pouch, 1 litre £66 at Sephora£66 at Selfridges If your hair is a tad on the limp side like mine, keep a stash of this sulphate-free volumising shampoo on hand. It's enriched with peptides from amaranth to bulk up the hair fibres, and antioxidants to protect it from environmental damage. Use the giant 1 litre pouch to top up your travel size and regular bottle multiple times. Violette Fr Frange Puff dry shampoo brush, 2g £38 at Violette FrViolette Fr Frange Puff refill, 4g £24 at Violette Fr We're used to the spray-and-go approach to dry shampoo, but this handbag-size brush targets greasy spots directly. It's ideal for fringes and it's laced with a beautifully fresh scent. Washing the brush is easy, and when it runs out you simply buy the refill sachets. Kérastase Elixir Ultime L'huile Originale hair oil, 75ml £58 at Kérastase£58 at SephoraKérastase Elixir Ultime L'Huile Originale refill, 75ml £42.80 at Boots£42.80 at Look Fantastic For added shine, softness and heat protection of up to 230C (446F), this camellia-infused hair oil is my go-to. Leave-in hair treatments: 10 of the best

My hair is desperate for a salon treatment. But I have no time. In an ideal world, I want something I can use at home that gives me close to salon results. But it can't take up too much time, because, well, no time. When I find myself in such situations – alas too often – a leave-in hair treatment is the answer. Leave-in conditioners are super easy; they seal in moisture without weighing down the hair and double up as a detangler, making hair easier to manage. But recent developments in the leave-in category mean it covers even more extensive hair needs. Ouai, Virtue, Aveda and Briogeo have serums for healthier scalps, thus promoting healthier hair. There are treatments to counteract hair thinning: Living Proof, Phillip Kingsley and The Ordinary all have serums that decrease shedding and increase density. For damaged, chemically (over) processed hair, you need a bonding treatment – these are concentrated to repair hair's broken bonds, which dictate what your hair looks and feels like. (Frizzy, dry hair with split ends is a sign your bonds are not in good shape.) But there's help from the likes of Olaplex, K18 and again Living Proof. And the treatment takes minutes. Which is perfect when you have no time at all. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. 1.
