If you thought all cool Ferraris were red, think again. If there is one machine amongst the many prancing horses to leave the stables at Maranello, none comes within centimeters close to the legendary machine known to you and me as the 250 GTO. Built between 1962 and 1964, just 36 units of this special model were produced as hardcore racing machines to meet the homologation requirements for Group 3 GT racing. After their careers on the racetrack, these cars have gained a reputation as a car with holy grail status among Ferrari owners and the most discerning car collectors, as they have fetched some of the highest transaction prices in both private and auction settings. However, one special example is being offered for sale by Mecum Auctions in January 2026. A special car: chassis number 3729 GT, nicknamed 'Bianco Speciale,' is unlike the other 250 GTOs that graced the world with their presence. As hinted by the English translation of its Italian nickname (meaning 'White Special'), the provenance of the 3729 GT begins with the fact that it was the only GTO to be sold new in white; a decision that Mecum says required pulling internal strings at Ferrari. By providing your email address, you agree that it may be used pursuant to Arena Group's Privacy Policy. Per Mecum, the idea of a white 250 GTO was 'a huge deviation from Ferrari's strict color conventions—one that required quiet internal approval.' In the case of the late legendary British race team and dealership owner John Coombs, his connection to Alfredo Reali, 'Ferrari's discreet liaison for bespoke and sensitive client requests,' was a factor in securing the ultra-special request. However, unlike many of the Ferraris built under the modern-day Atelier and Tailor Made personalization programs, the 250 GTO was designed as a race car for actual competition, which it achieved with some of the era's most competitive drivers. Throughout its racing history, the Bianco GTO gained notoriety, piloted by well-known figures in the 1960s motorsport scene. It made its debut at Brands Hatch during the Peco Trophy on August 6, 1962, where Roy Salvadori drove it to a second-place finish. Just two weeks later, Graham Hill used it to finish second at the Goodwood RAC Tourist Trophy, which helped Ferrari secure the 1962 GT Manufacturers' Championship. In 1963, Mike MacDowel won the Whitsun Trophy and the British Grand Prix GT race, while Jack Sears achieved the car's first GT class victory in August. Despite being driven by racing legends, this GTO left its mark without securing a single class win. Source: Mecum Auctions Jaguar benchmarked this GTO for its hardcore racing machine However, another essential key piece of provenance that Mecum notes was that this car was used as a benchmark by one of Ferrari's motorsport rivals of the period: Jaguar. Though Coombs himself denies this, Mecum notes that it is 'well documented that he did, in fact, lend his Bianco Speciale to the engineers at Jaguar for study,' as he was supposedly 'determined to give the lagging brand a chance at matching or exceeding Ferrari's racing success with its seemingly unbeatable 250 GTO.' With this car in question, the boffins at Jaguar were supposedly able to reverse-engineer the 250 GTO and use the technical knowledge to build their very own competitor on the racetrack: the Lightweight E-Type. After Coombs' time with the GTO, the Bianco Speciale changed hands through four different owners before it landed in the hands of one of its former pilots, Jack Sears, who would keep it for 30 years. In 1999, it was sold to Jon Shirley, a former Microsoft president and COO, and a notable art and car collector who made his fortune during the tech giant's formative years. In 2008, it earned its Ferrari Classiche Red Book, an ultimate certificate of authenticity, as it maintained many of its original parts and equipment over the years. Final Thoughts Mecum is set to display the Bianco Speciale at its Monterey auction this month during Monterey Car Week before it hits the auction block as the headliner lot at its event in Kissimmee, Florida, in January 2026. Mecum has not listed a reserve or a price estimate on this car, but granted that the last 250 GTO to go to auction had a hammer price of $51 million in November 2023, it will take a pretty penny to be a part of 'the most exclusive car club in all of the world,' per Mecum. In my purview, this car, in fact, any 250 GTO, would have a special spot in my theoretical 'unlimited money' garage. However, granted its special provenance and the fact that it's the only one to be painted in white, seals its place. I'd buy the ESPN+ subscription just to see this machine hit the block live. I hope we will not see the bid go on. About the Author James Ochoa View Profile

Green-on-green 1971 Chevrolet Corvette LS6 convertible heads to auction

Mazda sold 45,057 vehicles in the U.S. in July 2025, marking a 13% year-over-year rise. CX‑50, Miata, and strong gains in Mexico and Canada led the surge. Don't miss out on August's best truck deals. Get the full details on the new 2026 Hyundai Santa Cruz, including a killer lease offer and other competitive incentives. A High-Performance Corvette From A Different Era Today's Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X have taken 'America's sports car' to new performance heights, but in the waning days of the golden age of muscle cars, enthusiasts were being catered to with cars like this 1971 Corvette convertible with the legendary LS6 big-block V8. Part of Mecum Auctions' 2025 Monterey Car Week sale, this car is one of just 50 LS6 convertibles built (plus 138 coupes), according to the auction house. That engine is numbers-matching, and the car wears a distinctive combination of Brands Hatch Green paint and a green leather interior, which should help it stand out among the many desirable lots at the various Car Week auctions. Going Out On a High Note By the turn of the decade, the muscle car boom of the 1960s was on borrowed time. Rising insurance rates and gas prices were on the horizon, making 1971 more or less the end of an era. But it was also the year the Corvette got the LS6, which had debuted in 454-cubic-inch form in the Chevelle for the 1970 model year as Chevy's ultimate big-block engine. In the Corvette, the LS6 was rated at 425 horsepower—down 25 hp from the Chevelle due to a lower 9.0:1 compression ratio—and 475 lb-ft of torque. Car and Driver published a zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13.8 seconds in its June 1971 issue. Those numbers aren't that remarkable today, but they were seismic in 1971. This car has a Muncie M22 'Rock Crusher' four-speed manual transmission and an optional Positraction limited-slip differential with a 4.11:1 ratio, plus power brakes, the F41 HD suspension, and an upgraded ZR2 radiator. It also has a removable hardtop in the grained black vinyl typical of the 1970s. One Of The Rarest Corvettes In 1971 the LS6 option cost $1,221 over the Corvette's $5,496 base price, according to Mecum. That made it a fairly costly option, contributing to the low production run of just 188 LS6 Corvettes, including both coupes and convertibles. In addition to its rarity, this convertible shows just 29,889 miles on its odometer and appears to be in good condition. However, the listing claims it's being sold with the original whitewall tires (on 15-inch Rally wheels), which would obviously need to be replaced to make this car a driver. It's likely the person pays the estimated $90,000-$100,000 Mecum expects this car to sell for will stash it away to wait for its value to appreciate more, however. That estimated price range is a relative bargain for a classic Corvette in a desirable spec. A C7 ZR1 recently went up for sale with an asking price of $185,000, for example. That's perhaps due to the number of low-volume performance versions of the Corvette that Chevrolet built over the years. For example, even within the same time period as this LS6 car, Chevy offered the race-bred L88 option as well. About the Author Stephen Edelstein View Profile

Porsche Fanatic Jerry Seinfeld is Also A Huge Fan Of This Familiar Brand

Apart from the legendary 90s sitcom that bears his last name or his appearance in the 2007 cult classic 'Bee Movie,' you probably know comedian Jerry Seinfeld as a bona fide car enthusiast. While other funny men like Tim Allen or Jay Leno build their car collections with an eclectic variety of different types of cars from different eras and brands, Seinfeld stands out with his hyperfixation toward one particular German automaker: Porsche. While not-so-subtle hints about his Porsche fixation may be found within the decorative artwork in Jerry's apartment in his namesake sitcom, his real-life collection shows that his tastes are more varied than they might appear. While he has amassed a large collection of Porsche vehicles that includes multiple iterations and different versions of the Stuttgart powerhouse's 911 sports car, his stable also includes some gems like the exact Porsche 917K that was previously owned and driven by Steve McQueen in the 1971 movie Le Mans. In January 2025, Seinfeld attempted to sell the King of Cool's purpose-built race car at the Mecum Auctions in Kissimmee, Florida, where it failed to sell even after a $25 million bid was placed on the star-studded race car. However, on a March 5 episode of Spike Feresten's "Spike's Car Radio" podcast, Seinfeld noted that he sold the car to "party he will not name" after the auction for an undisclosed amount "in the neighborhood" of $25 million. Despite his high profile and high-dollar Porsche obsession, the comedian, worth a Forbes-estimated $1.1 billion, recently revealed that he also has a penchant for a much, much less exclusive brand for reasons that seem linked to his Porsche obsession. In a recent appearance on The Smoking Tire podcast, Seinfeld revealed that he's been the proud owner of a few Subarus throughout his career. Although Subaru commercials say that love is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru, it isn't fair to conclude that the comedian's daily driver is some sort of run-of-the-mill Forester, Crosstrek, or Outback. In fact, Seinfeld's Subies are much hotter, rarer, high-performance versions of the Impreza, specifically the WRX STI Type RA and an S209, which he says he drives for pleasure. "I have a Subaru S209. Do you know what that is?" the Bee Movie star asked TST podcast host Matt Farah, to his surprise. "What a great car. [...] I love Subarus." Farah and his co-host, Zack Klapman, dug deeper into his Subaru ownership history, which began with the acquisition of a 2018 WRX STI Type RA, a special edition limited to just 500 units in the U.S. and 75 units in Canada to celebrate a successful Nürburgring lap record attempt. According to Subaru, these STIs received special upgrades, including a carbon fiber roof, rear wing signature gold wheels, special pistons, a retuned ECU, an upgraded exhaust, and pistons. Seinfeld recalls that his other Subaru, the S209, "is better" than the Type RA, so much so that he bought it back after regrettably selling it the week before the podcast episode was recorded, adding that he is "now totally in love with it." And there is a good reason why. Like the WRX STI Type RA, the STI S209 is a limited-edition, 'hard-core' version of the WRX STI that was sold exclusively in the United States for the 2019 model year. Like the Type RA, it featured cosmetic upgrades like a carbon fiber roof and wing, as well as a host of engine upgrades, including a bigger turbo, upgraded exhaust, and an ECU that contribute to 341 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. As one might expect, Seinfeld's love for his "special Subarus" stems from their flat-layout engines, a natural connection between the Japanese manufacturer and Porsche, as both are the only automakers that still use Boxer engines. He also lamented that his Subaru's driving characteristics have something "missing" in modern cars. "When I started with cars, the way companies express their national character through these machines was so entertaining," Seinfeld said. "And [these] precious few left that do it, and I think Subaru is one; they express their national character, and the Japanese automotive character is fantastic. They have a great automotive passion, and I love what they do."
