Meta's promising new display-enabled smart glasses are right around the corner, and this is how much you'll have to pay

After the unprecedented success of the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, despite their lack of a display, the company got to work on something even better. Next month, likely during the Meta Connect event, the company is expected to unveil its newest smart glasses that will feature a insider Mark Gurman — in his newsletter Power On — just revealed that sources have informed him about how much these glasses will cost. Though initial estimates a few weeks back ranged around the $1,400 mark, the real answer is apparently just about $800. That is, in my opinion, an absolutely stellar price, especially in an industry where the Apple Vision Pro costs $3,499. According to Gurman, Meta is employing the same strategy that it made use of to make its Quest VR headsets so popular: accepting lower profits to capitalize on an emerging industry. For example, the Meta Quest 3 starts at $499, which is only around 14 percent of the cost of Apple's headset. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is convinced that AR smart glasses are the future of computing and will replace smartphones, so the company has invested billions into VR. The glasses will only have a singular, tiny display for using mini apps and receiving notifications, in addition to a few other use glasses are a bridge between the display-free smart glasses of today, and the full AR smart glasses of tomorrow, like the Meta Orion shown off last year. It's also worth noting that a consumer version of Orion will almost certainly not cost as low as $800, as the technology is very complex to manufacture. With Meta's upcoming glasses, you'll finally be able to experience the vision that Zuckerberg has: a world where you don't have to take out your phone all the time. Similar products, especially by Xreal ( with proper AR too! ), already let you do this, but I'm hoping that Meta's offering will kickstart more competition in this space.

Meta eyes Prada for next AI smart glasses, Ray-Ban Gen 3 nearing launch

Meta is reportedly teaming up with luxury fashion house Prada to develop its next generation of AI-powered smart glasses, expanding its eyewear strategy beyond Ray-Ban. Although the Prada collaboration has not been formally announced yet, if the reports turn out to be true, the partnership will mark Meta's entry into high-end fashion tech for its Meta smart glasses lineup. This collaboration will also build on Prada's long-standing eyewear licensing deal with EssilorLuxottica. advertisementFor those who don't know, EssilorLuxottica owns RayBan, which Meta has been working with for years. Meta and EssilorLuxottica first partnered in 2019 and released the first-gen Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in 2021. EssilorLuxottica also owns Oakley, which Meta has confirmed that it is collaborating with, and will launch the product on June 20. And as mentioned above, EssilorLuxottica also has a licensing agreement with Prada, which the latter extended for another decade in December to a CNBC report, the Prada glasses are still in development, but a former Meta staff reportedly said that Prada's eyewear styles – particularly the ones with thicker temples – would actually be ideal for embedding Meta's AI tech. Earlier this week, Meta confirmed a new partnership with Oakley. These Oakley Meta smart glasses are aimed at athletes and active users and are expected to launch on June 20, as teased by a newly created Instagram account titled 'Oakley | Meta'. advertisement Reports suggest that the Oakley smart glasses will be a bit more rugged and weather-resistant than Meta's Ray-Ban glasses. While the Meta RayBan's are priced starting at $299 (around Rs 26,000) in the US, the Oakley ones are expected to be priced around $360 (Rs 31,000 approximately). The Oakley Meta smart glasses are believed to include similar features to the RayBan ones, such as voice-controlled calls, text messaging, livestreaming, photo and video capture, music playback, and integration with Meta AI via the 'Hey Meta' voice prompt. However, unlike the Ray-Ban version, the Oakley glasses may also feature a centrally placed camera, reportedly to help athletes like cyclists capture a better field of Oakley smart glasses will be Meta's third-edition of the product, with the second-generation Ray-Bans released last year. The current model of the Meta smart glasses includes features such as hands-free AI support, photo and video capture, language translation, and audio playback, all of which is integrated into frames like the Wayfarer and the newer Skyler. Lenses of the glasses can be customised with options like clear, sun, polarised or Transitions, and are compatible with prescription needs. Similar options are also expected with Meta's Oakley and Prada May this year, Meta also finally brought the Ray-Ban smart glasses to India, at a starting price of Rs 29,900. There is currently no news if and when the Oakley Meta glasses will launch in the Indian market.

Apple's AR Smart Glasses Could Launch In 2026: What We Can Expect

Last Updated: Apple is obsessed about competing with Meta in the smart glasses arena and its first product could roll out by next year. Apple's big AR push could now go into 2026 as new reports claim the company will bring its AR-powered smart glasses later next year. Apple is likely to keep things simple with these smart glasses and offer features that we have seen with the Meta Ray Ban smart glasses in the market. The report from Bloomberg, quoting an Apple employee, says the company is not likely to include this product in the Apple Vision lineup and have a new series for this category with toned-down AR features sprinkled with AI. The Apple AR smart glasses could be unveiled some time in late 2026 with the product available in the market by early 2027. Just like the Ray Ban glasses, Apple could adopt the same set of features to keep the price competitive. The device should have a camera and a mic so that you can record the surroundings and even enable music playback from the built-in speaker. However, Apple is tipped to add its own premium signature design and materials which will make it lightweight and easy to wear. The smart glasses are definitely coming into their own with the advent of AI and it seems Apple wants a big piece of this segment. Apple's CEO, Tim Cook is apparently obsessed with the product and more than AI, he is focused on making this device become a success. Apple clearly sees Meta as its closest rival in this space even though Google and Samsung have their own Android XR plans coming through later this year. But Cook is said to be making his mission to beat Meta with its own AR smart glasses. 'It's the only thing he's really spending his time on from a product development standpoint," an earlier Bloomberg report highlighted his interest. Google Glasses can rise again thanks to GenAI and the sudden popularity of this product. The Meta smart glasses come for around $250 (Rs 21,250 approx) which makes it far more accessible and appealing than the $3,299 priced Vision Pro headset. We are hoping that the company finds the right balance between its design, hardware and performance to deliver a product that not only excites the consumers but gives Apple some leverage in the market after its recent AI struggles.
