'Rani Mukerji Was Brave': Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway Director On The Breast-Pumping Scene

Last Updated: Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway has earned Rani Mukerji a National Award. Directed by Ashima Chibber, it depicts an Indian mother's fight against Norway's child welfare services. When Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway was released in 2023, few expected it to become one of Rani Mukerji's most emotionally resonant performances. Based on a real-life international custody battle, the film tells the story of an Indian mother living in Norway whose children are taken away by the country's child welfare services. What follows is a heartbreaking legal and emotional war as she fights against a foreign system to get her children back. Directed by Ashima Chibber, the drama struck a chord with audiences — especially parents — and has now fetched Rani her first National Award for Best Actress. Speaking about one of the film's most talked-about moments, Chibber, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, recalled the scene where Rani's character is shown pumping breast milk for her child — a powerful and intimate moment that she wasn't sure the actress will be okay with portraying. Ashima recalled, 'Rani was brave — she agreed to do the breast-pumping scene, expressing the milk, putting it in a packet, and taking it over. I wasn't sure if she'd be okay doing it. I thought maybe I shouldn't even ask. But I asked her once. I said, 'This is a part I feel is very important. It's a subtext that shows how far the child is.' She said, 'Yes, we're doing it. Just tell me what has to be done.'" Ashima also opened up about why Rani's performance connected so deeply with audiences and the jury. 'She has epitomised motherhood. I mean, look at that — what is she doing on screen? She's tearing through the screen and pulling on your hearts. I feel her performances have been brilliant, but this one hits you so hard in the heart, there's no way you cannot be moved." Talking about Shah Rukh Khan winning the National Award for Best Actor for Atlee's Jawan, Ashima said. 'I loved Jawan. I just love Shah Rukh — what he did in that film, the makeup, the hair, everything. He's truly a director's dream. Honestly, he deserves this award for every film he's done. It took him 33 years to win it, and now both Rani and Shah Rukh have won in the same year. It's iconic. And they are best friends too." Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway director on Rani's National Award win: Knew it all along

After watching 'Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway', many in the audience felt that it was one of Rani Mukerji's finest performances. And months later, on Friday, the actor was honoured with Best Actress at the 71st National Awards. The film's director, Ashima Chibber, in an exclusive chat with India Today, admitted that the moment Rani said yes to her, she knew it was going to be the 'IT' film for her, one that would win every an exclusive chat with us, Ashima Chibber said, "When the script and actor are married, magic happens. Even before the announcement, I messaged her 'Party kidhar hai?' because I was so confident. When an actor is announced as the winner, it means the most to the director as it's such a validation for everyone's work."Chibber added that while Rani's phone remained busy for a long time after the announcement, they finally got on a call, and the actor told her how unreal it felt. "I told her it was cosmic or something bigger than that. This award had her name written all along," the director said. Praising the actor, Ashima Chibber added that Rani has outperformed in every film but absolutely hit it out of the park with 'Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway'. Her performance also reached international shores as the filmmaker revealed getting emails and messages from across the globe about the film. "They were so moved by the story and Rani's performance. It's an accomplishment of an actor to be able to portray the role in such a way that it crosses boundaries, borders, generations and lifetimes. I call it a privilege for a director to get an actor who has that strength."Given that the lead part was a Bengali, Rani Mukerji fit naturally, but we wondered if she was the first choice. To this, the director said that she could only see her doing the part. "The story was written by Rahul and Sameer, and when I read it, I could only see her. Rani has done some wonderful roles, but I felt that I wanted to see her as this mother, fighting for her children. Those expressions, those emotions – the world had not yet explored them. And since I had already worked with YRF, she did know about me. She took a couple of days to read the script but said yes instantly. I think she's also one of the most intelligent actors we have. She's sharp, razor sharp as a blade. She got the character perfectly," she Chibber also weighed in on the social media conversation that both Rani Mukerji and Shah Rukh Khan received this honour quite late in their careers. She mentioned how both of them have done some phenomenal work and shown a wide range in their performances. "It's late, but not too late. This is a huge recognition for both of them. They are the pillars of our industry. And who's replacing them? They can't be. These people are like Kohinoors."advertisementIn her Instagram post on the honour, the filmmaker even thanked her producer, Nikkhil Advani, for letting her be. She mentioned how that's the best thing that can happen to a director. Chibber said she's attuned to all kinds of actors and producers but to have someone who has their back makes things so much easier. "I lucked out with Nikkhil, he was totally hands-on involved and understood my vision. Given his experience as a director and producer, everything became so smooth for the entire team," she also shared that post 'Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway', her career saw a different high, as she got calls from biggest producers in the industry. "You sort of jump into the bigger league as more people start seeing your craft, especially in the international market. I was also jumping genres. To make that transition and to have producers say, this is a special kind of craft. For me, that was my very big gift from the film."On a final note, we also asked Ashima Chibber if she's in touch with Sagarika Chakraborty, on whom the film is based. She shared how they are connected on social media and keep a tab on each other's lives.- EndsYou May Also Like

Rupali Ganguly Demands National Awards For TV Actors: ‘We Work Hard Too'

Rupali Ganguly highlighted how TV actors are often overlooked despite their long shooting schedules and hard work. The recent National Film Awards have Bollywood and other regional industries buzzing with excitement. Renowned names like Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Vikrant Massey took home the prestigious award for their respective performances in films like Jawan, Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway and 12th Fail. Amid the industry's celebrations for big wins, Rupali Ganguly has come out asking the most important question: Why are there no national awards for television artists? TV actress Rupali Ganguly, who plays the lead in one of the most-loved shows, Anupamaa, shared her thoughts in a candid chat with Viral Bhayani. Not holding back even a bit, she said, 'There are National Awards for everyone—film stars, content creators. But there's nothing for TV actors." 'We Work Very Hard': Rupali Ganguly Further in the conversation, Rupali highlighted how TV actors are often overlooked despite their long shooting schedules and hard work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while most industries slowed down, television kept moving at its regular pace and so did the artists. 'Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we kept working. When a film star works continuously, it makes headlines. But no one talked about how we, the TV artists, worked non-stop during COVID," Rupali added. She also had a heartfelt request for the Indian Government. The actress said, 'I request the government to recognise our efforts too. We work very hard."
