Straight-A student made worst joke possible to teacher over bad grade... now his parents are suing
A gifted student was suspended after an Arizona school's monitoring system flagged a drafted email where he joked about shooting up the school over a bad grade. Now, his parents are suing. The Marana High School student, who only goes by NM in court documents, was suspended from the educational institution after a monitoring system picked up on a drafted email that joked about a mass shooting. The unsent message read: 'GANG, GANG, GIMME A BETTER GRADE OR I SHOOT UP DA SKOOL HOMIE.' He also included: 'Mister, mister, I want to date your sister,' and 'Skibidi toilet my grade is in the toilet.' The top-performing sophomore had drafted the email to send to one of his teachers about a bad grade. He told his mother, Karalee Merrill that he started writing jokes after feeling awkward about asking his teacher for clarification, she told The Arizona Republic. Karalee had been shocked to learn her son had composed the message after she was contacted by school, which suspended the student over the threat. The school's system had picked up on the draft within an hour through a program installed on students' Chromebooks - a policy parents have to sign off on every year which made clear that students could be suspended for misusing school property. 'But there has never been anything that made me think that down to the very keystrokes,' Karalee told The Republic. His parents, Karalee and Curtis, found out about the system following their son's next-day suspension after Principal Caitlyn Kauffman left them a voicemail. The parents tried to fight the suspension that could hurt their child's chances of getting into the Air Force Academy - a dream of his. NM was originally given a 10-day suspension, which was later extended to 45 days after a district hearing. It would later be shortened to 11 days on the promise that he attend three therapy sessions, which he did. It was eventually shortened to nine days on his record, despite him having served a total of 11 days. The parents are now suing the school, saying the suspension violated their son's First Amendment rights as he has a 'right to make a joke about school violence while at home with his mother,' their attorneys argued in the suit, viewed by Daily Mail. The family argues NM's threat was not credible, nor was it sent, so the school didn't have good reasoning to believe any student faced potential harm. They also pointed out the school allowed NM back into the school to take his PSAT, 'after which he waited unsupervised on campus for Karalee to pick him up,' the suit read. NM's teachers also allegedly didn't know why he had been suspended or that he had threatened the school. Karalee also believes her son has become a 'statistic.' 'I've heard more and more about people who have been in trouble for something similar,' she told The Republic. 'I almost feel like my son is now a statistic to make it look like: "Hey, look at what great technology we have for stopping school shootings!" And it makes me wonder how many of these statistics are similar to my son.' 'He's worked hard all his academic life to be a good student. To be a good kid. He volunteers,' she defended. 'And to feel like none of that mattered? To feel like he can do good things his whole life, and one little mistake that he didn't even realize was as big of a mistake as it turned out to be.' She said her son lost trust, and her and her husband worry this mistake could hurt their son's future, who is hoping to be valedictorian of his class. 'Both my husband and I are former public school teachers. I get that school safety is important,' she told the outlet. 'Having had this experience, I'm realizing what kinds of freedoms... we're giving up for an illusion of safety.' More and more schools across the nation are implementing monitoring programs similar to that at Marana High School. Fifty-two school districts or charter schools in Arizona are using monitoring programs. Programs like these have been credited with saving countless lives. More than 250 school shootings occurred in the US during the 2024-25 school year.

Harleen Sethi recalls turning saviour for some school kids: I felt I needed to protect them
On July 26, 2005, Mumbai faced one of its worst natural calamities as the floods submerged the city under water and caused massive deluge. Harleen Sethi was a teenager at that time, and remembering that day as it clocks in 20 years, the actor tells us what she was doing then and how she made it through. Harleen Sethi(Photo: Instagram) 'I was about 16 and had my lectures at Mithibai college. It was pouring outside and suddenly, we were allowed to leave for home. Unaware of the flood situation, I chose to go to NM college canteen to eat their Idli-Sambar which I loved. As I was eating, the water level started rising. It reached the level of the table and I stood up on it to finish my food,' she shares. As Harleen Sethi was leaving, she met her cousin who was studying in that college and they decided to head out together. 'By then, we were both waist deep in water. We decided to go to her house in Andheri East but we couldn't find any auto, so we started walking,' she reveals, adding that it was one of the most challenging journeys she undertook. On the way, she even turned saviour for some school kids. 'There used to be a school on the way and when we reached its lane, it was flooded and there was this current in the water. The school kids were just coming out and they started flowing in water. I just instinctively went and helped the kids reach a safe spot. I felt like I needed to protect them,' she shares. The actor reveals that it took her and her cousin about three-and-a-half hours to reach their home. 'My cousin's brother, who was even younger than us, didn't come home all night as he was stuck in his school. There was such a panic situation because no one could get through on calls too. It was quite a dreadful day,' she says, adding that there is still some trauma attached to that day. 'There's some sort of PTSD from it that every time when it's pouring and I'm crossing the sea even today, I'm always looking at the tides,' she ends.

The company reported second quarter net income available to common shareholders of $534 million and diluted earnings per common share of $0.59. Adjusted net income available to common shareholders (1) was $538 million, and adjusted diluted earnings per common share (1) was $0.60. Compared to the second quarter of 2024, reported and adjusted net income available to common shareholders (1) increased 12 percent and 10 percent, respectively. The company reported $1.9 billion in total revenue during the second quarter, including $832 million in pre-tax pre-provision income (1). Amid FEMA uncertainty, Western governors commit to more coordination on post-fire flooding

(Photo by Patrick Lohmann / Source NM) Several governors of Western states on Tuesday endorsed formalizing a partnership to help each other deal with the aftermath of increasingly devastating wildfires, citing the long-term effects of post-fire flooding and also uncertainty about the Federal Emergency Management Agency's future. Governors from New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado attended a panel discussion on the topic of post-fire flooding at the Western Governors' Association meeting in Santa Fe. The governors questioned experts — including state emergency response officials and a government landslide scientist — at a discussion called 'Flood After Fire – Enhancing Safety in Post-Fire Landscapes.' The governors described the phenomenon as increasingly urgent due to wildfires burning hotter and larger across the West. High-severity wildfires can change soil composition, converting even modest rainstorms that fall on burn scars into potential floods or debris flows. In New Mexico, for example, post-fire flooding has impeded the recovery from the 2022 Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire, both for the City of Las Vegas as it tries to rebuild its water treatment facility and for smaller communities in and around the 534-square-mile burn scar. Other Western governors, including Spencer Cox of Utah, said they're increasingly concerned about flooding after fires. That was the case when Cox came across the aftermath of a fire that burned this week. Las Vegas to get $98 million to replace water treatment facilities after 2022 wildfire damage 'The first thing I thought when I drove into that community had nothing to do with the fire or the homes burned,' he said. 'What I realized was, for the next five or six years, things are going to be pretty awful for those people because of the mudslides and the runoff, the sediment that comes down.' The conversation occurred as at least six wildfires burn across New Mexico, and as burn scar areas in northern and southern New Mexico experience severe flooding or are warned to be on high-alert for it. While no FEMA official sat on the panel, the agency's past performance with post-fire flooding and its future loomed over the meeting. Participants mentioned the agency's name more than 10 times, and speakers noted the challenges they'd face if the agency is dismantled, as called for briefly by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. While New Mexico's United States Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján say the agency should still exist, they recently called on FEMA to change the way it deals with post-fire flooding. The agency has 'repeatedly struggled to respond effectively' to second-order effects from wildfires, including 'cascading disasters such as landslides, flooding and water system failures that compound damage and slow recovery,' the senators wrote. NM's U.S. senators to Noem: Reform FEMA. Don't scrap it entirely. Collin Haffey, a Washington post-fire recovery leader who worked for New Mexico Forestry Division during the 2022 wildfires here, spoke on the panel and said there's a 'tremendous amount of uncertainty' about the federal government's role in wildfire recovery going forward. 'If I'm trying to build my portion of the railroad track to meet them, I don't know how far to go,' he said. 'And I think that that lack of communication down to the local level is putting lives and recovery at risk.' So he called on the WGA to create a formal agreement between Western states, one that could help states help each other deal with the aftermath of devastating wildfires amid uncertainty about what type of aid could come from the federal government. 'We have these peer-to-peer networks because I have their cell phone numbers,' Haffey said. 'But that's not necessarily the best.' In response, Cox, who on Tuesday was named the new WGA chair, said he would spearhead an effort to create a regional partnership. 'Even if we weren't, you know, seeing FEMA reform and changes happening there, we should have been doing this anyway,' he said. 'And so let's do it anyway.'
