FromSoftware had one big problem turning an old Dark Souls 3 boss into an Elden Ring Nightreign boss, and apparently it solved it by yeeting him into the sky

Everyone's favorite voiceless FromSoftware extraordinaire, Zulie the Witch, has uncovered how one boss fight in Elden Ring Nightreign needed to be changed to work around a visual detail previously obscured by a cutscene. FromSoftware developers are the masters of asset reuse, and Nightreign shows off the studio's prowess perfectly. Plenty of bosses from older games make an appearance, and some are changed. As Zullie the Witch notes, this is necessary when bringing them from one game to another, as their old gimmicks may not work in Nightreign. Zullie highlights one subtle change that has been made to Nameless King to make his fight more suitable for this multiplayer experience. An optional boss in Dark Souls 3, he rides a Stormdrake in the first phase of the fight, before dismounting and absorbing its soul in an ode to Ornstein and Smough from Dark Souls 1. In Dark Souls 3, the cutscene allows the devs to swap the Nameless King model for one that's about 35% smaller, Zullie claims. However, in Nightreign, there's no cutscene, so how does FromSoftware make the change without us noticing? Now, in Nightreign, he simply rockets himself upwards before coming back to land slightly smaller than he was before. In the chaos of battle you may not even notice it. Zullie says he disappears about 105 meters up, near the doors of the Spirit Shelter, and then the smaller model appears and is what comes down. I love how much smoke and mirrors there are in video games. They're all an absolute miracle. After admitting it kind of forgot about duos, FromSoft finally adds a 2-player mode to Elden Ring Nightreign and adjusts balance based on number of players
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After countless requests and a mixed reception at launch, Elden Ring Nightreign has finally made good on its promise of adding a two-player duos mode to the game. Developer FromSoftware dropped a new update, patch 1.02, earlier today, introducing what is by far the co-op hit's most-requested feature. Nightreign's patch notes explain that you can now begin expeditions with two people, so you might notice the 'Expedition Type' setting has now been replaced with a 'Number of Players' button when you set up a game. FromSoft previously admitted that it kinda forgot about duos while in production, which means the final game was almost entirely balanced around and mainly dependant on three people journeying around The Lands Between in Elden Ring Nightreign multiplayer. Don't worry about Nightreign becoming substantially harder with just two people, though. "The game balance will be adjusted to the current number of players," the patch notes say. Of course, an Elden Ring Nightreign solo mode with downscaled difficulty has been available from the start and you could technically play with two people if one player happened to run away from a three-player game. The community's favorite "Seamless Co-Op" modder also managed to get duos working in mere hours after launch. Not having to jump through extra hoops if you want a date night or only have one friend sick enough to endure those bosses is very handy, though. Elsewhere in the patch notes, the studio details various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, as well as a new Relic filtering option "to allow a more precise selection of Relic effects." Elden Ring Nightreign's big new challenge is one of the most hated, polarizing bosses in FromSoftware history: "I wish it was longer and he traveled a full zip code away with every attack"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Elden Ring Nightreign recently released the Everdark version of what's widely regarded as its most boring boss fight, Augur, and as many players had feared, the beefed-up version has made a long, floaty boss fight even longer and floatier. Augur is basically a giant floating wisp that occasionally deigns to attack the player with magic and sleep spells. Everdark Augur is a massive floating wisp that unleashes sleep carpet bombs and constantly flies across the entire, gigantic boss arena. The kicker is that, after dealing with the normal, puny first phase, you get a special magic weapon that you can use to regenerate FP and launch projectile attacks at Everdark Augur, whittling away its chunky health bar. The thing is, those special projectiles are about the only meaningful way to damage Everdark Augur. Even ranged characters like Ironeye and Recluse will struggle to hit the boss with arrows or spells due to how high it floats and how much it moves, and other attacks probably wouldn't deal much damage anyway. This means that all the gear you pick up on the way to the final boss is mostly irrelevant, because you're going to be pigeonholed into spamming projectiles no matter what. As a result, buildcrafting for an Everdark Augur run boils down to maximizing stats like magic or weapon skill damage, healing, stamina recovery, FP recovery, and universal bonuses like that. It's not that Everdark Augur is hard or brutal. The boss genuinely isn't very threatening. Its attacks are pretty easily avoided or blocked, and since the charged projectiles on the special weapons have more range than an anti-tank rifle, you can kind of ignore any concept of spacing or proactivity. But would you believe that a monotonous, pigeonholed, tedious boss fight has not gone down well with a lot of FromSoftware fans. "'I love the Augur fight so much, I wish it was longer and he traveled a full zip code away with every attack' - No one ever," writes Reddit user CtrlAltDoom, summing up much of the response to Everdark Augur. SynthLup questioned the bizarre decision to force players to use custom magic weapons against a boss that has high magic resistance. (It is weird.) "Honestly impressed how Everdark Augur made Base Augur look fun," chimed in No-One-9424. I would actually disagree there. With a buddy, enjoying Nightreign's new duo expeditions, I died to and then beat Everdark Augur last night, and I would argue that at least the music and visuals are good. That said, it is very underwhelming compared to the other Everdark bosses, but I suppose this was expected given how dull Augur is as a baseline. The special weapons feel like a solution to a problem that didn't really need to exist, but I suppose it is at least different, and arguably interesting, to buildcraft for one specific strategy that's unique to this boss fight. It is kind of lame how multiple classes are just inherently unfavored in the matchup, though. All characters have their bad matchups, but nothing else quite like this, I would say. But this fight does get some brownie points for reminding me of the Storm Ruler boss in Demon's Souls, which is still one of my favorite FromSoftware games. The good news is that there are a few ways to make Everdark Augur very manageable, if not particularly electrifying. Your_Pal_Kailum has a pretty good writeup that includes many of the strategies my friend and I incorporated in our successful fun. The tragic irony is that this actually makes this boss exceedingly farmable, as it can be difficult to fail once you know what you're doing. Here's a shortlist: Stay far away from your teammates (unless you need to revive them) to reduce AoE overlap Make an empty spot in your main hand weapons to instantly equip the special weapon when you acquire it Focus on transferable stat bonuses when drafting rewards and gear throughout the run Take any form of sleep resistance you can get If the lock-on will cooperate, focus on Augur's energy orbs when they appear to stun the boss Use your weapon's fully charged projectile attack when the boss is extremely far away, as it seems to have functionally infinite range Try to find a Sacred Seal with a healing spell on it, because you'll have infinite mana, and therefore infinite healing, thanks to the custom weapon's FP regeneration FromSoftware had one big problem turning an old Dark Souls 3 boss into an Elden Ring Nightreign boss, and apparently it solved it by yeeting him into the sky.

Elden Ring: Nightreign's Duo Mode Is Coming to Save You From Matchmaking Hell
Elden Ring: Nightreign, from developer FromSoftware, at first seemed like a gimmicky spinoff of its 2022 hit Elden Ring. Since then, it's proven to be a popular game that was the best-selling title in June, and in a few days, it's going to get one of its most requested features. In Nightreign, you can play solo or in a team of three. On July 30, the option for Duo Expeditions will be available, letting players take on runs with a friend. Players have been requesting a two-player mode since Nightreign came out. Modders even went so far as to release a mod to add the feature to the PC version of the game just days after it launched. Adding the Duo option means no longer needing to find a third player via matchmaking. As is the case with any online matchmaking, you never know if you'll get a competent player. There's also no voice chat in the game, so communication is limited to pinging locations on the map. Nightreign is set in the Elden Ring universe and has a shrinking storm circle mechanic, similar to Fortnite. This takes 15 minutes, so players have to act quickly in order to gain levels and obtain the weapons and items they need to defeat the first night's boss. If the boss is defeated, the storm circle resets and players have another 15 minutes to get even more powerful. If they survive the second night, they'll be transported to an area to take on the Nightlord, a powerful boss needed to complete the run successfully. Nightreign is a roguelike, so every run is different, with locations and night bosses changing. Because of that, it's easy to continue to play matches over and over again. Last month, FromSoftware released an option for harder Nightlords called Everdark Sovereigns. These are powered-up Nightlords that have more health and an additional phase in their fight, where the difficulty ramps up tremendously and makes for a battle meant for the most expert of players. Duo Expeditions for Nightreign will arrive via an update on July 30. Elden Ring: Nightreign is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles for $40.

Elden Ring Nightreign's most requested game mode is coming next week
FromSoftware is hoping to maintain momentum for Elden Ring Nightreign by addressing one of the biggest complaints against the game. Elden Ring Nightreign seemed a bit of a risk at first, being a multiplayer-only follow-up to the epic original, but the game has been a major success. After topping the charts in the US for a second month, developer FromSoftware announced Elden Ring Nightreign has surpassed five million copies sold within less than two months. At the same time, the expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow Of The Erdtree has hit over 10 million sales. To celebrate the milestone, FromSoftware has another treat up its sleeve for Nightreign enthusiasts, with a mode which probably should have been included all along. As shown in a new trailer, Elden Ring Nightreign will get 'Duo Expeditions', aka a two-player mode, in a new update set to be released on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The 1.02 update will also come with quality-of-life improvements to the user interface, including more filtering options for Relics. Elden Ring Nightreign was predominantly designed to be played in groups of three, and while there's the option to play solo, that makes it far more difficult. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. It's unclear how this Duos mode has been implemented, but hopefully it will be balanced to level the playing field and make two player expeditions not too punishing. Considering FromSoftware has dedicated a trailer to its existence, it suggests a fair amount of work has gone into it. More Trending More fundamentally, it's much easier to coordinate with just one another player instead of two, so this might make Elden Ring Nightreign more accessible in general, especially to those who don't have two other mates who are Elden Ring fans. While Elden Ring Nightreign's popularity has dropped on Steam since it launched in May, it has remained steady over the past few weeks. Over the past 24 hours (via SteamDB), the player peak hit just over 50,000 players, just behind Palworld and Red Dead Redemption 2. FromSoftware's next game will be The Duskbloods, which is set to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime next year and is also multiplayer-focused. A recent rumour claimed the studio is also working on another project for 2026, which may be tied to the Armored Core franchise. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
