Markram leads South Africa to 296-8 in ODI series-opener
Sent in to bat, Markram -- opening for the first time in ODIs since 2021 -- crunched nine boundaries to get South Africa off to a strong start. Skipper Temba Bavuma (65) and Matthew Breetzke (57) also helped set a tone for the three-match ODI series. South Africa have so far rebounded well following a 2-1 defeat in the Twenty20 series between the teams. With an eye towards the 2027 50-over World Cup, Australia are in the midst of transition after the retirements of veteran batters Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell following March's Champions Trophy. But South Africa's task of defending the total will be more difficult after quick bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the series with an ankle injury. South Africa eased to 68-0 in sunny conditions before Ryan Rickelton on 25 successfully reviewed an lbw decision against part-time spinner Travis Head. Moments later he survived another scare against Head when wicketkeeper Josh Inglis dropped a thick edge. His luck ended on 33 when he hit straight to mid-off, brightening Head's mood. An unruffled Markram appeared to be cruising to his fourth ODI century before he was caught behind off left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis in the 24th over. A sluggish Bavuma was overtaken by flamboyant Breetzke, playing his third ODI. But South Africa lost three wickets for just seven runs with the fall of Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs (duck) and Dewald Brevis (six), before Bavuma kicked on. After a breakout T20 series, ODI debutant Brevis hit a first-ball six -- but then holed out to Head, who finished with 4-57.

Markram top scores in first ODI, but Rabada misses series with injury
After missing out in the T20 series, he used the extra time afforded him in the 50-over format to build an innings, while still scoring at a strike of more than 100. He struck nine lovely fours, and shared an opening partnership of 92 with Ryan Rickelton, who as in the three T20s, looked scratchy in making 33, needing 43 deliveries to do so. Markram's frustration at getting out for 82 — edging a wide delivery from Ben Dwarhuis to Josh Inglis — was understandable given how controlled he looked and it was ultimately one of the primary reasons behind SA failing to reach 300. 'I wanted heaps more,' Markram said in an interview during the innings break. 'I was finally starting to find my rhythm and then got out.' Playing his first match since the World Test Championship final, Bavuma understandably struggled with his timing initially and with Markram's dismissal, was also cautious at the start of his partnership with Breetzke. With Klaasen and Miller absent, the next few series will be important for Breetzke, to establish himself in the ODI side. After making a hundred on debut in Pakistan and 83 in his second match, Tuesday's 57 off 56 balls, that included one of just three sixes in the SA innings, was another tick next to his name. Breetzke's partnership of 92 with Bavuma, provided the foundation for a late innings surge, but that didn't materialise in the manner SA has managed in the last few years. Bavuma hit five fours in his innings of 65, which came off 74 balls and will be pleased with his first outing since Lord's, a period in which he also recovered from a hamstring injury. Markram mentioned that the pitch was slow, which made shot-making hard, while the new ODI rule, which allows the bowling team choose one of the two balls they started the match with after 34 overs to complete the innings, also appeared to give the Australians more control.

UPDATE: Proteas set Australia a target of 297 to win ODI series opener
Three of South Africa's top-order batters reached half-centuries. While South Africa were well anchored on Tuesday, they were pinned back by Australia's bowling attack in the latter stages of their innings, with the Proteas reaching 296/8 in the first of three ODI matches between the two nations in Cairns. After being sent in to bat, the Proteas top order combined well, with Aiden Markram (82 off 81), captain Temba Bavuma (65 off 74) and Matthew Breetzke (57 off 56) contributing half-centuries. However, having positioned themselves well at 223/3 in the 40th over of their innings, the Proteas middle-order struggled to get on top of the home team's attack. While all-rounder Wiaan Mulder managed to hold them together with a 31-run knock at a little faster than a run a ball, the SA team were somewhat restricted in an attempt to pick up the pace over the last 10 overs. Part-time spinner Travis Head, who took 4/57, was the best of Australia's bowlers. The hosts must compile 297 runs in their 50 overs to take an early series lead. Earlier, shortly before the match started, it was revealed that Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada had been ruled out of the ODI series with an ankle injury.

Injured Rabada ruled out of ODI series for South Africa. Australia fields first in Game 1
CAIRNS, Australia — Pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out with an ankle injury in a major setback for South Africa just as the three-game ODI series got underway against Australia on Tuesday. The Australians, coming off a 2-1 win in the T20 series , won the toss and elected to field in Cairns to start the one-day international portion of the tour. This is the first ODI between the teams since Australia beat South Africa in the 2023 World Cup semifinals. Their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was washed out. Power hitter Dewald Brevis and allrounder Prenelan Subrayen were selected to make their ODI debuts for South Africa, and Temba Bavuma returned for his first match since leading the Proteas to the World Test Championship with a victory over Australia in the final at Lord's. The 30-year-old Rabada underwent scans on Monday which confirmed inflammation in his right ankle. Rabada will stay with the team in Australia and undergo rehabilitation. Kewena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in last week's T20 series, replaced Rabada in the squad but was left out of the playing XI for the first ODI. Marnus Labuschagne returned to the Australian team after being dropped from the recent test series victory in the Caribbean. Australia opted to play Alex Carey as a specialist batter and use Josh Inglis as the wicketkeeper. ___ Lineups: Australia: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Aaron Hardie, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood. South Africa: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma (captain), Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Prenelan Subrayen, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi. ___ AP cricket:

Dewald Brevis Joins Elite List After Hitting Six On First Ball Of His ODI Career
Last Updated: Brevis came out to bat at No. 6 for South Africa in his first-ever ODI match and scored six on the first ball he faced. 22-year-old Dewald Brevis came out to bat at No. 6 for South Africa in his first-ever ODI match on Tuesday (August 19), and the right-handed batter opened his account by hitting a six on the first ball he faced. On the third ball of the 41st over of South Africa's innings of the match taking place at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns against Australia, Brevis took an aerial route against Travis Head and added six runs to his and his team's tally by hitting a big shot down the ground. On the next ball he tried to play a similar shot once again, but this time he failed to clear the boundary rope and got out. Dewald Brevis hit a six off the first ball… out the next! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 19, 2025 The six on the first ball of his ODI career helped Brevis join an elite list. He became only the second South African cricketer ever to hit six on the first ball of his ODI career. Johann Louw was the only other South African to hit six on the first ball of his ODI career. In his second match for the South African team, Louw got a chance to bat at No. 9 against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom on November 7, 2008, and he smacked Shakib Al Hasan on the first ball he faced. On the second ball as well, Louw hammered a six and followed it up with a four on the third ball. view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 14:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
