BFI Elections: Jaslal Pradhan to challenge Ajay Singh for presidents post
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Olympian Jaslal Pradhan will challenge Ajay Singh, who is seeking a third straight term, for the president's post in the much-delayed Boxing Federation of India elections, scheduled for Thursday. According to the final list, Singh, representing the Uttarakhand state unit, will be up against Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association chief Pradhan, who competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the light welterweight category, after the Returning Officer Justice (retd) Rajesh Tandon rejected the candidature of former BFI vice president Rajesh Bhandari for 'violating the provision of the Model Election Guidelines" last week. Bhandari will, however, contest for the vice-president's post. For the secretary-general's position, Uttar Pradesh Boxing's Pramod Kumar, former BFI treasurer Digvijay Singh and Delhi's Neeraj Jain are in the fray. Tamil Nadu's Pon Baskaran, Pondicherry's R. Gopu and Odisha's Anil Bohidar will contest for the treasurer's post. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court, while hearing pleas of four state units challenging the BFI interim committee's decision to conduct polls and the validity of the new constitution, gave its nod on Monday for the elections to proceed. However, the results will remain subject to the final outcome of the case. The tenure of the previous BFI office-bearers ended on February 2. Elections were initially scheduled for March 28, but the process was stalled due to legal wrangling, including multiple appeals and counter-appeals. Yuvraj Sandhu continues hot streak, leads after opening round
Agency: PTI Hosur (Tamil Nadu), Aug 19 (PTI) Chandigarh's Yuvraj Sandhu, the Order of Merit leader and last week's winner in Mysuru, continued his hot streak with his opening round effort of eight-under 63 that gave him the lead at the Rs 1 crore PGTI Players Championship here on Tuesday. The event is being played at the Clover Greens Golf Course & Resort. The trio consisting of Nepal's Subash Tamang, Delhi's Shaurya Bhattacharya and Hyderabad's Milind Soni shot scores of seven-under 64 at the Par-71 course to occupy tied second position. Mohd Azhar of Hyderabad was placed fifth at 65 while Bengaluru-based teenaged amateur Veer Ganapathy was placed tied sixth at 66. As PGTI made its debut at Clover Greens, most of the professionals were playing their first ever competitive round at the picturesque venue. Sandhu, also making his first visit to Clover Greens, outperformed all the others on day one in overcast, cool and extremely windy conditions as the temperature hovered between 20 to 24 degrees celsius. Sandhu, a three-time winner this season on the PGTI, mastered the tree-lined narrow fairways and the wind by producing three birdies on the back-nine and then adding an eagle and four birdies at the cost of a solitary bogey on the front-nine. The 28-year-old Sandhu's round was highlighted by a 20-feet eagle conversion on the second, a drive that found the Par-4 13th green and two terrific up and downs, one from the hazard and one from the rough, for birdies. Sandhu said, 'I've started really enjoying playing in such gusty conditions, I feel I thrive in these situations. Like I said last week, I've developed my skills of playing in these conditions with all my experience of playing in Asia. 'It's also great to lead in my very first round at a venue, just like last week in Mysuru. Clover Greens is a short track but it has a lot of challenges to offer courtesy its narrow, tree-lined fairways and the pot bunkers. 'Fortunately, I played the Pro-Am couple of days back with the owner of the course Mr. Austin Roach who gave me a good insight into the challenges posed by this course. That was very helpful for me." Subash Tamang, the 2023 All India Amateur champion, mixed eight birdies with a bogey on day one. His accurate approach shots left him six birdie putts within a range of four feet. Shaurya Bhattacharya and Milind Soni, who were both tied second along with Tamang, produced two eagles each during their rounds of 64. Shaurya, a winner this year, chipped-in for his eagle on the 12th and came up with a fabulous second shot from 190 yards to leave himself a tap-in for eagle on the second hole. Manus bronze and Rashmikas junior gold light up day for India
Agency: Shymkent (Kazakhstan), Aug 19 (PTI) India's double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol competition and Rashmika Sahgal was crowned champion in the junior women's air pistol event of the Asian Shooting Championship here on Tuesday. Bhaker shot 219.7 in the eight-woman finals to finish in third position. China's Qianke Ma claimed the gold medal with 243.2 after pipping Korean Jiin Yang who settled for the silver with 241.6. Rashmika then struck gold, India's third individual yellow metal of the competition, displaying amazing career consistency to score 241.9 and finish a massive 4.3 points ahead of silver winning Korean Han Seunghyun. It was double delight for Rashmika (qualification score 582), as she combined with Vanshika Chaudhary (573) and Mohini Singh (565) to win the team gold in the event. Bhaker (583) also won a team bronze in women's air pistol, alongside reigning Asian Games champion Palak (573) and Suruchi Singh (574). Both Palak and Suruchi, however, missed out on the individual final by three and two points respectively. In the final, Bhaker was fifth after the first five-shot series and fourth after the second, but a 10.5 on the 11th single shot took her up to second behind eventual winner Ma Qianke of China. From then on, with Ma out of reach, it was a battle of attrition between Korean 25m pistol Olympic champion Yang Jiin, experienced Iranian Haniyeh Rostamiyan and Bhaker. The Indian though managed to fire the big shots when it mattered the most, to settle for bronze, with Haniyeh finishing fourth. In the junior women's final, Rashmika was involved in a battle for supremacy from the get go with Korea's Han. However, the Indian crept past her opponent for first time after the 13th single shot and from there never looked back, a 10.9 on her 15th being the icing on the cake. Since Monday, India has won an individual bronze and a team silver and a team bronze in the 10m air pistol events across both the senior men and women categories. They have also swept the individual junior golds on offer in the event with Kapil Bainsla showing the way on Monday, followed up by Rashmika Sahgal on Tuesday. Also, while Kapil had a team silver in the event, Rashmika completed a golden double with help from teammates Vanshika and Mohini in the women's junior team competition. Jonathan Gavin Antony also brought home a bronze in the junior men's air pistol while Girish Gupta won the youth men's air pistol gold and Dev Pratap the bronze in the youth men's category. The youth team also won a gold in the event. Overall, India has so far won five gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
